The MIWI Training Program invites early career investigators to apply for an interdisciplinary methods training program aimed at improving scientific progress and clinical care by investigating the intersection of mental and physical health, focusing on health disparities. This program is supported by the National Institutes of Health through OBSSR and the National Institute of Mental Health. Applications are due by February 1, 2025.

This workshop is open to all CAHSS faculty at all career stages, including those who are new to research and creative achievement at UMBC.
Participants will learn about the how CARAT collaborates with faculty in the development stage of research and creative achievement, what to expect in a consultation session, and how those early conversations can lay the groundwork for external funding proposals.
There will be time for Q&A. Participants are invited to submit questions in advance on the registration form.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 2025 Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program
UMBC Competition Deadline is October 16, 2024
Dear CAHSS faculty member,
- The purpose of the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program is to support high-caliber scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. The 2025 program expects to provide fellowships of $200,000 to 30 exceptional scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals. The funding is for a period of one or two years, with the anticipated result being a book or major study.
- UMBC may nominate two scholars for the competition: one "senior" and one "junior." The senior scholar must be tenured. The junior scholar must have received their terminal degree in the last 10 years (2014-2024, for this round).
- Please note that Andrew Carnegie Fellowships are open only to citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
- The 2025 call is on the theme of political polarization in the United States. Studies of polarization in other countries will be welcomed, providing they offer lessons that can be applied to the United States. Please keep in mind that Carnegie seeks projects that will be written to communicate with a broad audience. You may find it useful to browse the projects that were awarded last year since the theme (political polarization in the U.S.) is unchanged.

Your application materials must include:
- A 3-5 page, double-spaced prospectus describing the project, including a projected work plan and approximate time frame. Fellowships will be for 12 or 24 months and must begin on the first of the month between June and September of 2025, and no later than September 1, 2025. Note that the Carnegie program allows flexibility in how you manage your time commitment. You may opt for a regular fellowship leave, or decide to teach part-time during the semester while working full-time on your project during the summer.
- Curriculum vitae
- Estimate of budgetary requirement. Funds may support: salary and fringe benefits, project-related travel (research, conferences), research assistants (hourly or stipend), other project needs (i.e., data collection, surveys, transcription, project supplies, consultant, contractual service/s, etc.).
The Dean's Office will review the applications and select one or two scholars to recommend to the President as UMBC’s nominee(s) by October 23rd. The nominee(s) will work with CARAT (specifically, Rachel Brubaker) to complete the full application process and to forward materials to the President’s Office by November 1st. Nominees must submit their applications to the Carnegie Corporation of New York by November 08, 2024 (5:00 P.M. EST).
The Carnegie jury will evaluate nominations by the following criteria:
- Originality and promise of the idea
- Quality of the proposal
- Promise to offer means to reduce harmful polarization or to enhance social cohesion
- Record of the nominee
- Plans to communicate findings to a broad audience
The UMBC Cybersecurity Institute invites applications for Cyber Graduate Fellows. This fellowship is funded through the Maryland State support for the Cyber Institute and aims to advance our impact on cybersecurity research and development in the Maryland region.
We welcome applications from faculty across all colleges at UMBC in related disciplines, who will study aspects of cybersecurity by deeply integrating not only technological but social aspects of cybersecurity. The fellowship program aims to increase high profile research at UMBC and increase engagement with external researchers through novel graduate student research and to promote cross-disciplinary research that can attract future external funding.
The Cyber fellowship will be a one-time graduate fellowship for no more than one year, for which a fellow will receive a stipend up to $25000, and tuition and health benefits (student only) for stipend. We will select approximately 12 fellows for 2024-2025, the exact number subject to availability of funds.
Applications should include a one page research statement. In addition if a student is already identified then comment on student progress to date including any publications so far, faculty plans for external engagement, plans for attracting future funding. Note that a student does not need to be identified beforehand for this submission.

Call for Applications Fall 2024
Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data?
Are you interested in understanding how to extract useful knowledge from data?
The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department of Information Systems for the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program (DSS) in Fall 2024.
Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows (TFs) and peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of data and its impact on society. This year scholars will have the opportunity to be teaching fellows or research fellows. Scholars will have an opportunity to work on research projects in Climate Science, Deep fake detection, data storytelling, learning analytics and other data science related projects. Responsibilities:
• Scholars will work as TFs and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS296 Foundations of Data Science. Dr. Chen’s class meets Monday/Wednesday 10a - 11:15a (ITE 237) and Ms. Zaidi’s class meets on Monday 4:30p - 7:00p (ITE 241). The cohort of DSS scholars will meet as a group with the IS296 instructor. Scholars will be paid $20.00/hour for specific TF tasks, for 5-10 hours per week in Fall 2024.
• Social science DSS scholars will attend at least two CS3 events in Fall 2024 and/or participate in research initiatives with social science faculty. The scholars will also be expected to attend one mentoring meeting with CS3 faculty.
Background and skills:
Applicants should have knowledge in at least one of the following:
Analysis of social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data
Python or one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on cloud computing, python)
Jupyter notebooks with python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.
