<Title>Compliance announcement: Video conferencing for interviews</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><h3>Announcement from the UMBC Office of Research Protections &amp; Compliance:</h3><div><br></div><div><span>Our office has received several information requests about using virtual/online formats to take the place of previously planned (and IRB approved) in-person interviews conducted outside of campus. Use of such formats may be useful to PIs to conduct human subjects use research during the COVID-19 event.</span><div><br></div><div>We checked with Mark Cather of UMBC Department of Information Technology(DoIT).  He recommended an online conferencing tool that would provide security and confidentiality which would meet the IRB's requirements for maintaining privacy and ensuring confidentiality. Remember, these are requirements stated in an approved IRB protocol.</div><div><br></div><div>The only solution DoIT supports for UMBC investigators is <strong><em>WebEx.</em></strong>  DoIT has certified it up to level 3 (see the IRBs <a href="https://research.umbc.edu/umbc-security-requirements-for-protecting-sensitive-research-data/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">guidance on security requirements</a>), which means it is good with all data types (including HIPAA).  DoIT has several FAQs and instruction guides <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Webex" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">posted</a> to assist investigators if there are plans to add to a protocol.</div><div><br></div><div>Speaking of which, if an investigator plans to add Webex use to an existing protocol, please be sure to forward a <a href="https://research.umbc.edu/protocol-modifications/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">protocol modification</a> and have it approved <strong>before</strong> using.</div><div><br></div><div><br><div><div>If you have any questions, please contact us at <a href="mailto:compliance@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">compliance@umbc.edu</a>. </div></div></div></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div>NSF has released a new version of the Proposal &amp; Award Policies &amp; Procedures guide (PAPPG) (NSF 20-1)</div><div><br></div><div><p>The new PAPPG will be effective for <strong>proposals submitted or due, and awards made, on or after June 1, 2020</strong>. Significant changes include:<br><br></p><ul><li>NSF will require use of an NSF-approved format in submission of the biographical sketch and current and pending support documents, once the PAPPG (NSF 20-1) becomes effective;<br><br></li><ul><li>NSF is partnering with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to use <a href="https://www.eiseverywhere.com/emarketing/go.php?i=747369&amp;e=Y2FtZXJvbjJAdW1iYy5lZHU=&amp;l=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sciencv/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SciENcv: Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae</a> as an NSF-approved format for preparation of both documents.<br><br></li><li>Use of an NSF-approved format will not be required until implementation of PAPPG 20-1 on June 1, 2020.<br><br></li><li>To assist the community, NSF has developed websites with additional information for the preparation of the <a href="https://www.eiseverywhere.com/emarketing/go.php?i=747369&amp;e=Y2FtZXJvbjJAdW1iYy5lZHU=&amp;l=https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/biosketch.jsp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">biographical sketch</a> and <a href="https://www.eiseverywhere.com/emarketing/go.php?i=747369&amp;e=Y2FtZXJvbjJAdW1iYy5lZHU=&amp;l=https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/cps.jsp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">current and pending support</a>.<br><br></li></ul><li>New requirement for proposing organizations to submit government-wide representations and certifications in the System for Award Management (SAM);<br><br></li><li>New requirement for providing e-mail documentation of Program Officer approval for the submission of RAPID and EAGER proposals; and<br><br></li><li>Clarifications to current and pending support coverage as well as other changes throughout the document.</li></ul><p><br></p><p>You are encouraged to review the by-chapter summary of changes provided in the Introduction section of the PAPPG.</p><p>While this version of the PAPPG becomes effective on June 1, 2020, in the interim, the guidelines contained in the current PAPPG (NSF 19-1) continue to apply.</p><p>Additionally NSF has published a FAQ for the updates to the NSF current and pending.  NSF will no longer accept Current and Pending document not prepared using an NSF approved generation tool.  More details can be found in the attached document (please download FAQ document below). </p></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><h3>Reminder!</h3><h3>Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 Center for Social Science Scholarship/CAHSS Summer Faculty Research Fellowship</h3><h4><strong>Deadline: <span>Saturday, February 15</span></strong><strong><span>, 2020</span></strong></h4><h4><strong><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csss/posts/new" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Download the Fellowship Application here.</a></strong></h4><p> </p><p>Applications are now being accepted for the Center for Social Science Scholarship/CAHSS Summer Faculty Research Fellowship (SFRF). The purpose of this fellowship is to support significant social science research among tenure-track and tenured faculty in CAHSS, resulting in a submittable product by December 2020.</p><p>Applications are welcome from any tenured or tenure-track faculty doing social science research in any CAHSS department. Fellows will receive a $6,000 award during the summer of 2020. Up to three fellowships will be awarded.</p><p>By December 2020, each Fellow agrees to complete a submittable product, which can include an external grant or fellowship proposal, journal article, policy paper, book manuscript, or book chapter; upon completion, Fellows shall provide a copy of this submitted product to the Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship. Fellows who are preparing an external proposal are expected to work with <a href="http://mipar.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MIPAR</a> for pre- and post-award assistance.</p><p>Interested faculty should complete and submit an application (linked above) by the specified deadline.</p><p>Applications will be reviewed and ranked by members of the Center for Social Science Scholarship Advisory Board, according to the following criteria:</p><ul><li>Quality of proposed research project;</li><li>Significance of the project in its field;</li><li>Publishing/funding potential of the work;</li><li>Qualification of the faculty member to carry out the work, including the requisite expertise in the topic area and prior research productivity;</li><li>Likelihood that the proposed work can be successfully completed with fellowship support and that it will result in a submittable product within the specified time period;</li><li>Approval and recommendation of faculty member’s department chair.</li></ul><p><span><em><br></em></span></p><p><span><em>Funds for this fellowship are provided by the Center for Social Science Scholarship, the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS), and the UMBC Vice President for Research.</em></span></p></div>
