The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is committed to building a Culture of Health that provides everyone in America a fair and just opportunity for health and well-being. Racial disparities in COVID-19 infections and deaths have brought to the forefront well-documented and longstanding inequities in family and community wealth and opportunity. Upending centuries of policy decisions that perpetuated racism will require significant transformation to elevate the voices of communities historically excluded from decision-making.
RWJF funds research that can move policy toward the goals of dismantling structural racism and promoting health equity. In 2015, RWJF launched the Policies for Action (P4A) research program to support public and private-sector policy research that builds understanding on how economic, social, and health policies advance health and racial equity.
Any systematic approach to eliminating the racial wealth gap requires transformative policies focused on bolstering long-term family and community income streams and building and sustaining generational family and community wealth in Black, Indigenous, Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and other communities of color. The goal of this P4A call for proposals is to build the evidence base investigating how national, state, local, or private-sector policies and practices can reduce growing levels of racial inequality in wealth, and significantly improve the financial wellbeing and economic security of families and communities that have been systematically subject to disinvestment, and therefore are unable to enjoy a fair and just opportunity to be healthy.

On today's special episode of Retrieving the Social Sciences, we hear a panel discussion about UMBC's social science Fulbright Scholars. Joining us on the panel is Maryam Elhabashy (UMBC '21), a Research Assistant at Rutgers University and a 2022 Fulbright recipient. Maryam's Fulbright project is entitled "Faith, Family, Food, and Fitness: Exploring Trends of Obesity among Kuwaiti Women."
We also hear from Dr. Brian Souders, Fulbright Program Advisor and the Associate Director of Global Engagement Opportunities at UMBC.

On today's episode we hear about pedagogical simulations and the immigrant experience in educational settings from Dr. Kerri Evans, Assistant Professor of Social Work at UMBC.
Dr. Evans describes an ongoing project to develop a board game designed to enhance experiential learning surrounding the experience of immigrant children in the K-12 educational setting in the United States. The project, which was sponsored by a Hrabowski Innovation Grant, has led to the development of materials that can be seen by clicking this link.

The Cultural Anthropology Program supports research aimed at understanding patterns, causes, and consequences of human social and cultural variation. We have opportunities for undergraduate and doctoral students, as well as for senior researchers via a variety of submission types that we will introduce.
Researchers, administrative staff, and others in the social, behavioral and economic sciences community are encouraged to attend. Featured speakers include NSF program directors Jeffrey Mantz, Siobhan Mattison, and Jeremy Koster.
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions during live Q&A sessions as part of each webinar.

The recent special collection of Socius: Sociological Research for a Dynamic World began with a question: "If research is to make a difference in reducing inequality...how?" Offering new perspectives on ways that sociology can do more to drive large-scale social change, four new commentaries reconsider this question. Commentary authors Michelle Jackson (Stanford University), Cecilia Menjivar (UCLA, and President of the American Sociological Association), Elizabeth Birr Moje (University of Michigan), and Herman G. van de Werfhorst (University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies) outline potential strategies for the field, including remaking research tools, incorporating theory and social-political contexts, learning from scholarship across disciplines and policy areas, and building a social science of radical reform. Join us for a webinar on June 8th, where we will be joined by special collection authors and commentary writers to consider the state of the field and identify ways for sociology to move from understanding the problem of inequality to illuminating responses. |
