Undergraduate Data Science Scholars

Call for Applications


Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic or geographic data?

Are you interested in how to extract useful knowledge from data?

The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department of Information Systems to establish the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program (DSS) in Spring 2022. Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows (TFs) and peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of data and its impact on society.

Interested students should send a resume and a brief one or two sentence statement of interest to socialscience@umbc.edu by February 10, 2023. Please put "CS3 Data Science Scholars" in the subject line of the email.

The Congressional District Health Dashboard is a new online tool that provides first-of-its-kind critical health and social data for all 435 congressional districts across the country.

The Dashboard incorporates 36 key measures of health, such as deaths from cardiovascular disease and breast cancer, along with conditions that affect health, like housing affordability and access to nutritious foods. Until now, most of these data were not available at the congressional district level, nor were they compiled in a single location or easily available to the public.  

Join us to explore the Dashboard and its innovative features, and dig into key findings related to child poverty, maternal health, and racial and economic disparities in health:

NSF implemented revised versions of theBiographical Sketchand Current and Pending (Other) Supportformats for consistency with the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 23-1). The requirement to use the revised formats is effective for proposals submitted or due on or after January 30, 2023.

These revised formats are now available inSciENcv and on the NSF Policy Office website. As a reminder, the mandate to use SciENcv only for preparation of these senior personnel documents will go into effect for new proposals submitted or due on or after October 23, 2023.

Staff from NSF and NIH will conduct a webinar to discuss the revised formats and demonstrate the SciENcv system on Thursday, January 19th at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.Webinar registrationis available now.  Click on this link to register for free:

The Research Grants (R-Series) are the oldest and most frequently applied-to mechanisms at the NIH. While the R01 is the most recognizable, it may not be the best option for every principal investigator. With over ten different R programs, selecting the right fit is a key element in NIH success.  In this session, Hanover Grants explores the different grant programs in the R-series to help faculty discern which research grant is the best fit for them.

Fulbright Accelerator Workshop for CAHSS Faculty

An invitation with registration will be sent in January.

Learn about the 2024-2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program and other exciting Fulbright opportunities at this workshop for CAHSS faculty, presented by the Institute of International Education (IIE), which develops and implements the Fulbright program.

Dr. Julie Taylor,IIE Director of Academic Relations for the Fulbright program, will provide information on the upcoming competition cycle, that starts in February 2023, and on the Catalog of Awards.

Dr. Brian Souders, Associate Director for Global Engagement Opportunities in the Center for Global Engagement, and UMBC's Fulbright Scholar Liaison, will discuss support for faculty applicants. Tips for preparing strong Fulbright applications, initiating outreach to international host institutions, and doing short- and long-term planning, will also be covered.

Dr. Tanya Saunders, Associate Professor, LLC Program, will speak about their experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil.

Time will be given for Q&A.
