Free online AI Ignite program, apply by 1/22 Online program prepares you for AI internships

AI4ALL Ignite offers a groundbreaking opportunity for undergraduate students interested in artificial intelligence. This no-cost, virtual AI career accelerator program is designed to prepare students to interview for technical AI internship positions.  As part of the accelerator, participants work on an AI portfolio project directly with AI industry professionals, present the portfolio to peers and industry professionals at an all-day virtual symposium, and cultivate and grow a network within AI. Apply online by January 22.


Students who participate in the Spring 2024 accelerator will be ready to interview for AI technical internship positions by September 2024.

As a UMBC student, your application will be prioritized. We recommend that you apply early (by Friday, 12/15) to the program accelerator. Admissions are made on a rolling basis and there are limited spots available. AI4ALL may close the application early if they fill the program.

The nonprofit AI4ALL has offered its Discover AI program to UMBC students since 2021. They have now revised their programs and invite UMBC students in computing-related majors interested in Artificial Intelligence technology to apply for their new, free, online AI4ALL Ignite program that begins in Spring 2024.

What is AI4ALL? AI4ALL is a national nonprofit transforming the pipeline of AI practitioners and creating a more inclusive, human-centered discipline. It empowers students to be AI Changemakers by cultivating an environment where they develop skills in critical thinking and relationship-building and expertise in responsible AI. AI4ALL champions the diverse next-generation AI changemakers through education, ethics, and relationship-driven networks.

What is AI4ALL Ignite? The AI4ALL Ignite program gives undergraduates the opportunity to

AI4ALL Ignite is open to undergraduate students in a major or minor related to computing, e.g., Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, and Bioinformatics. While all are welcome to apply, AI4ALL prioritizes students whose race, gender, or ethnicity has been historically excluded from AI: Black, Hispanic and Latinx, and Indigenous folks; and women, gender-expansive, and non-binary folks. UMBC and nonprofit AI4ALL have partnered to offer undergraduate students in any major the opportunity to apply to the Discover AI program, which will take place during the Fall 2023 semester.  The 10-week program starts on September 29 and includes synchronous meetings on Fridays 3:30-5:30pm and asynchronous instruction. No UMBC course credit will be given for participating. Apply online by September 18, 2023.

What is AI4ALL Discover AI?

Discover AI is a virtual project-based program in partnership with your school that offers a hands-on introduction to computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), ethical issues surrounding AI implementation, and tech careers. In Discover AI, students work in groups on an AI/Machine Learning project based on real-life applications of AI that the students find curious. 

Students get access to AI industry leaders and are guided through a roadmap to cultivate a future career in the AI industry. Through research, discussions, and reflection, you will explore the intersectionality of AI with other fields and articulate your own mindful perspective of AI. The following questions are proposed: What are both AI technology's positive and negative implications on society? How can (and does) AI affect communities in today's world? 

Why should you consider the Discover AI program?

Upon completion, participants receive an AI4ALL Discover AI certificate of completion and the opportunity to opt-in to Spring 2024's AI4ALL Ignite - a virtual accelerator that offers Undergraduate students the chance to work on an AI portfolio project with mentorship from AI industry experts. The accelerator also helps participants gain skills to set them apart in the AI internship application process.

WHAT

Discover AI is a virtual program that provides students with a project-based introduction to computer science, machine learning, data, artificial intelligence, and tech careers through the lens of societal and ethical impact. In addition, students get access to AI industry leaders and are guided through a roadmap to cultivate a future career in the AI industry.

What are both the positive and negative implications of AI technology on society? How can (and does) AI affect communities in today's world? Through research, discussions, and reflection, you will explore the intersectionality of AI with other fields and articulate your own mindful perspective of AI. The program is facilitated at no cost to students.

Students that complete the program will emerge with actionable next steps in pursuing an academic or career path in AI  and the opportunity to continue in the following semester to our second program, Apply AI and direct mentorship from industry leaders in the AI and tech industry from companies like  Google, Capital One, Facebook, Slalom Consulting, Accenture, Pearson and more. At the end of the program, students receive a Certificate of Completion and access to the AI4ALL Changemakers community with additional resources, ongoing support and mentorship.

WHO

It's available for undergraduate first-year students, sophomores, and juniors with all coding and/or computing/AI levels, including everything from no experience to advanced. If you're a computing major, the program is a great supplement to your existing coursework. If you are not, we welcome you as well! If accepted, you will have the opportunity to learn more about artificial intelligence in a safe and thoughtful environment that offers you the chance to consider AI as a future career option and as a presence in your major industry/discipline. We recommend that students without a coding background take the first four modules for free here at EdX before the program begins. AI4ALL programs are designed to bring together and highlight voices that have been historically excluded and that will lead and shape the future of AI. 

WHEN

The ten-week program starts on February 24 and includes both synchronous meetings on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 pm as well as asynchronous instruction.
