"what i did
was take negative
and turned it into positive
sponsored kids
took the youngsters from the hood
and showed them good
to feed their hunger
these kids grow so
no matter what they are told
its better for them to have a book than a Beretta"
The Homies and the popz Compton Cricket Club (CCC), in collaboration with The band Cloth and Kai Morrison of Vibe and Vision Films, today releases their first cricket rap music video.
Compton, Los Angeles, California, USA - March 2009: The music video titled "Bullets" (3:51) provides a poignant visual and musical account of the team members' lives before and after the club was formed in 1995 by Social activist Ted Hayes and Blade Runner producer Katy Haber.
Through this medium, the team wishes to convey their key message about the positive power of Cricket to bring about personal transformation in the face of overwhelming odds as well as promote a greater amount of peace in the world.
By the team overcoming their own adversity, they hope to spread the etiquette, sportsmanship, and ambassadorship of Goodwill and Peace espoused by Cricket culture throughout other socially and economically deprived neighborhoods and inner cities not only in America but throughout the globe.
The Compton Cricket Club is continuing to raise money and awareness for their most recent endeavor to do just that.
In Sydney, the social entrepreneur Hugh Snelgrove continues his efforts to raise enough financial support necessary to see a tour to Australia realised , planned for February 2009, which would be the first by an American side.
Shot on September 20, 2008, the video features special appearances by West Indies all-rounder Franklin Rose and 2004 Olympic track and field Gold medallist Joanna Hayes. Many of the present members of the Cricket team as well as Alex (drummer) Day (lead guitar) Yolin (Base) of the band Cloth also appear throughout the video.
They have toured the UK four times highlighted by a specially arranged delegation to Buckingham Palace to personally meet HRH Prince Edward, as well as a ground breaking trip to present a cricket bat to the leader of the political arm of the IRA, Gerry Adams in Northern Ireland.
The club which primarily includes ex Hispanic/Latino and African American would-be gang members and homeless men, aims to address the issues of anti-social activities and homelessness through the ethics and discipline espoused by the etiquette of Cricket.
"The aim of playing cricket is to teach people how to respect themselves and respect authority, so they stop killing each other," Theo Hayes, artist and team captain.
