Promoting Cricket At UMBC
An opportunity to grow cricket fans on campus
posted over 11 years ago
After the cricket team won the championship, I spoke with Nancy Young, Vice President for Student Affairs, and we agreed to meet early next month to talk about how to grow cricket's popularity, or at least its familiarity, on campus.
The best way to introduce a game is to get people to play it, and one idea I had was to set up a Street20 league or tournament for the Fall.
Street20 is designed for quick, fun games. It's six-a-side cricket, 20 balls per innings, and everyone (except the keeper) bowls four balls. The key thing is that Street20 forces EVERYONE to have a go at batting AND bowling. That's what makes it a good choice to introduce cricket to new fans.
(Complete rules are at the website below.)
Who would be interested in this idea, either by recruiting co-ed teams and/or by helping organize and umpire?
What do you think?
