It’s no secret you’re likely wired in to some form of social media- Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, you name it. But have you ever thought about whether you’re getting the most out of your social media usage? Social media isn’t just about gaining “likes” and “followers.” It can help you launch ideas, spread messages, connect with like-minded individuals on campus or even help you land a job.
For Extra Credit, try out some of these social media strategies to build upon your current social media usage:
1. If you’re going to join, participate!
Social Media done right is all about active participation- being a mover and shaker of conversations and connections. Don’t join only to sit back and passively scroll through other peoples’ posts. Add your voice and ideas to the mix! Non-involvement means missed opportunities. Are you a commuter student? Staying active on social media is a great way to build a stronger connection with the campus community when you’re away from campus!
2. Don’t Make it All About You
Go easy on the “selfies” and posts that only focus on you. Share a thought-provoking article. Advertise for an upcoming event in your local community. Re-post items from those you follow. Finding a balance in what you post shows your followers that you value other people and care about being an active member of society.
3. Keep it Clean
Now a timeless rule in social media, make sure to conduct yourself professionally online. Think before you post- is this something you want your mom, professor, or future employer to see?
4. Participate in Healthy Discussion/Debate
When done the right way, healthy discussion and debate is an attractive quality of social media. Do not get caught up in online conversations or posts that contain abusive language, inappropriate content, or that are down-right unprofessional. Your ability to communicate respectfully and effectively online might grab the attention of prospective employers.
5. Brand Yourself
This is especially important if you are using social media for professional purposes. Tell people who you are and what you are about. Streamline your usernames to make it easier to search for you. Keep your bios concise, but make a point about your intentions. Make connections and post things that relate to who you say you are.
Don’t forget, LinkedIn is a particularly useful site for those who are looking to create a professional online image!
6. Build Community
Use a hashtag to build camaraderie in anticipation of an upcoming event or help preserve memories after one has ended (Example: check out #umbcgraduation). If you lead a student organization at UMBC, you can use sites like Vimeo and Instagram to share your organization’s values and ideas. You could also create a discussion blog for org members to share thoughts and opinions on relevant topics.
