Decorate your dorm room with easy crafts!

Dorms usually look very bland and unexciting. You want to make your new home away from home look inviting and comfortable as possible. Cheap and easy-to-make crafts will brighten things up without spending much green. Here are a few ideas:

Paint a glass bottle and use it as a vase, or add a dew drops of paint into a clear bottle mixed with water to add a splash of color by your window space, or wherever you want.

Post up memorable photos on your wall! It will cost less to tape these pictures on your wall than buying a large poster. You can even use other things like paystubs.

Use pictures from magazines of your favorite sports team or celebrity and tape them on your wall.

Use a bedsheet as a curtain to get rid of those bland window shades.

For others check out this site!

Death and Facebook: Memorialized Profiles

Death and Facebook: Memorialized Profiles:

Geekosystem continues the conversation the New York Times started in its article about death and Facebook and the interesting questions that arise when the two intersect. No, this isn’t an article about “internet suicide,” in which someone attempts to remove themselves from all aspects of online social networking and community. This article looks to explore how the one-employee-for-every-350,000-Facebook-users team can manage a very sensitive issue better in the future.

“At the moment, a dead person’s profile will sit unchanged (that is, unless the person’s survivors have their passwords), and it will continue to show up in the profiles and home pages of that profile’s friends. The deceased’s survivors can either have the page removed, or “memorialize” it, which requires them to fill out this form, and include a link to an obituary or news article as proof of the person’s death.

“Ms. Chin said Facebook was considering using software that would scan for repeated postings of phrases like ‘Rest in peace’ or ‘I miss you’ on a person’s page and then dispatch a human to investigate that account.

“We are testing ways to implement software to address this,” she said. “But we can’t get it wrong. We have to do it correctly.”

How do you think Facebook can best deal with this? And what do you think about the future of media technology, especially as more issues like death that were previously experienced by a small circle of people “IRL” are being experienced by an increasing number of people through online communities?

The Year in Logo Design.

Creative Review has a really great article talking about Logo design in 2010. I love the way that they have separated out different ‘trends’, it makes you more appreciative for the logo designs within their own trend.

They state ‘Transparency in logo design has become a bona fide design tool, like type or colour, not a trend. It’s too ubiquitous anymore to be considered a direction: it just is.’. I’m really interested in when this happened. You see re-branding happening pretty often nowadays, and if you pay attention you do see transparency and negative space being highly utilized.

If you look at the examples they give of innovative logos, you’ll notice that it is not longer a play on words, but more a play on space, texture, shapes, and your own mind. Advertisers and designers are counting on you to sort of fill in the blanks they have left us. They are creating puzzles within design, and allowing us to come to our own conclusions. Advertising and design is no longer an in your face approach, and it ponders the question: What’s next?
