U.S. Department of State-sponsored Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. The CLS Program is a full scholarship for overseas summer language study for American undergraduate and graduate students.
The program is 8-10 weeks long each summer, and we offer academic credit through Bryn Mawr College. While some of the CLS languages require previous study, most of them do not require students to have any prior experience studying critical languages. Again, the CLS Program is a full scholarship – selected students do not pay anything!
The CLS Program looks to represent the full diversity of the U.S. students population in the broadest sense. We hope to see more students from STEM majors participate in the Program. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics drive global innovation, but less than 20% of all Americans who study abroad are in STEM fields. We know that employers want to hire candidates with language skills and cultural expertise—two things that students will gain by going abroad with CLS. Learning a critical language will give UMBC students a competitive edge in the job market and set them apart from their peers.

We have scheduled an information session for UMBC students with Brian Souders from the Study Abroad Office. It will be from 3pm-4pm at 331 Commons on Thursday, October 16th.
