The purpose of the SAME Baltimore Post Scholarship and Educational Outreach Fund is to encourage and support talented students to pursue careers in engineering, architecture, or the physical sciences. We accomplish this through scholarships awarded to qualified students who are pursuing a baccalaureate degree in these fields. Our scholarship recipients are selected on a merit-based approach.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Our program awards scholarships in three categories - One-Year Scholarships, Four-Year Scholarships and Relative Scholarships. All scholarship awards are in the amount of $2,000 per academic year and are awarded during the first semester.

Those students who are interested can obtain an application form from www.samebalt.org. Applicants are to select all categories they would like to be considered for, provided they meet the requirements. General requirements for all SAME scholarships are specified on the “Scholarship Selection Criteria” sheet of the application. Additional requirements for each of the three scholarship categories are provided below.

One-Year Scholarships
One-year scholarships are awarded to students entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year. Students must meet the “Scholarship Selection Criteria” requirements and must be attending a school that is in the SAME Baltimore Post geographic region. A list of eligible schools for the current academic year is provided below.

Four-Year Scholarships
Four-year scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen. Candidates for four-year scholarships may be nominated by the school or the candidate may self-nominate. Students must meet the “Scholarship Selection Criteria” requirements and must be attending a school that is in the SAME Baltimore Post geographic region. A list of eligible schools for the current academic year is provided below. Candidates must meet two requirements to be considered for scholarship renewal after the first year award:
• maintain a grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
• maintain full-time student status progressing towards a four-year degree in an eligible program

It's time to meet with your advisor If you are currently enrolled in Spring semester classes, but haven't registered for the fall semester, it's time for you to make an appointment to meet with your advisor.

Even if you have a hold on your account, you may come meet with your advisor so that you can get registration clearance. Then, once your hold is lifted, you'll be ready to register.

Students Who Have Not Completed the Gateway:
Students who have not completed the gateway requirements for their major must meet with an academic advisor in order to be cleared for registration. Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin boards outside the advising offices ITE 202-206. 

This semester we are continuing to offer individual advising appointments. Advising appointments require approximately 20 minutes of your time and give you the opportunity to review your registration plans with an advisor.

In order for this process to go as smoothly as possible, we ask all students to come to the hallway outside ITE 202-206 to sign up for advising. Please make a note of the date and time of your appointment.

Prior to your appointment:
1.    Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes available on the UMBC website HERE.
2.    Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3.    Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4.    Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5.    Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Fall 2014.

Computer Engineering and Computer Science:

Chemical Engineering:
If you have completed your gateway requirements and ENCH 215, please go to ENGR 314 to find your advisor’s contact information.

Mechanical Engineering:
If you do not receive an email by in March informing you of your advisor's name, you may visit the Mechanical Engineering Department and speak with Mr. Chuck Smithson in ENGR 210 for a list of advisor assignments.

Details for each information session are provided below.

Faculty Information Session:
This information session will focus on opportunities that exist for faculty when engaging with colleagues in Germany. The presentation will cover start-up funding, opportunities for single-PIs and funding programs that are relevant for larger PI groups. It will primarily focus on DFG funding programs, but will also cover relevant funding programs from other organizations such as the Alexander von Humboldt foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Registration for Fall 2014 classes has started. As a reminder, all students must meet with an advisor for pre-registration advising. Please see the information below to determine your next steps in the registration advising process.

Students Who Have Not Completed the Gateway:

Students who attend group advising will be cleared to register during the group advising session.

If you attend group advising, you may still sign up to meet with an advisor individually to address any additional questions or concerns you may have. However, an individual appointment is not required.

Awards

An undergraduate scholarship will be awarded. Awards are for one year only, but recipients may re-apply for a second year. All scholarship awards will be paid directly to the recipients.

Eligibility

1.     Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students attending a 4-year accredited college or university.

2.     Applicants must be majoring in a field of science or engineering, including life sciences and information technology.

3.     Applicants must be a rising junior or senior.

4.     Applicants must be US citizens. Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA (free application for federal student aid)


              Applications are due by March 28th, 2014.

Attention Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science Majors:

It’s time to start thinking about registration for Fall 2014. All students must meet with an advisor for pre-registration advising. Pre-registration advising appointments for Fall 2014 begin Monday, March 24, 2014. Please see the information below to determine your next steps in the registration advising process.

Students Who Have Not Completed the Gateway:
Students who have not completed the gateway requirements for their major must meet with an academic advisor in order to be cleared for registration. Beginning on Wednesday, March 12th, sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin boards outside the advising offices ITE 202-206. Appointments will begin Monday, March 24th.

This semester we are continuing to offer group advising appointments. Group advising appointments require approximately 30 minutes of your time and give you the opportunity to review your registration plans with multiple advisors in a small group setting. Students who attend group advising will be cleared to register during the group advising session.

If you attend group advising, you may still sign up to meet with an advisor individually to address any additional questions or concerns you may have. However, an individual appointment is not required.

In order for this process to go as smoothly as possible, we ask all students to come to the hallway outside ITE 202-206 to sign up for group advising. Please make a note of the date and time of your appointment.

Prior to your appointment:
1.    Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes available on the UMBC website HERE.
2.    Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3.    Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4.    Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5.    Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Fall 2014.

After your advising appointment, you will have clearance to register for classes. However, you will not be able to register until your assigned registration time. Your registration time is the earliest date and time that you may register for classes. For information about registration times, please go HERE. If you have not attended an advising session, you will not be able to register when your registration time occurs.

Students Who Have Completed the Gateway:
Students who have completed the gateway requirements for their major should follow the instructions for your specific major below. You may review your degree audit to check your progress in completing the gateway requirements for your major.

Computer Engineering and Computer Science:

If you have completed your gateway requirements, your may view your assigned faculty advisor’s name online. To access this information, follow these steps:
Your faculty advisor will be contacting you to schedule an appointment, but you may contact your faculty advisor beginning on March 24th.

Chemical Engineering:
If you have completed your gateway requirements and ENCH 215, please go to ENGR 314 to find your advisor’s contact information.

Mechanical Engineering:
If you have completed your gateway requirements, you will receive an email from the Mechanical Engineering Department by March 24th that will provide you with your advisor’s name or will advise you of a Mechanical Engineering advising meeting that you will be required to attend.

If you do not receive an email by the 24th, you may also visit the Mechanical Engineering Department and speak with Mr. Chuck Smithson in ENGR 210 for a list of advisor assignments and for information about the Mechanical Engineering advising meeting.
