Research Experience in Cyber & Civil Infrastructure Security

<Tagline>For Students With ADHD</Tagline>

Please contact Janet McGlynn (mcglynn@umbc.edu) for assistance with the application process, including a review of your resume and personal statement.

http://reu-ccis.uconn.edu/

Project Overview

This REU Site is funded by The National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Engineering Education and Centers, offering research opportunities in the security of crucial infrastructures to undergraduates with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD). Studies suggest that students with ADHD are more creative and more willing to take risks. Those traits are exactly what the field of engineering needs. Therefore, these students may offer the potential to present revolutionizing solutions to complex problems dealing with cyber and physical security of critical infrastructure. The growing interconnection, interdependence, complexity, and integration among cyber and civil infrastructure systems; the ever-increasing sophistication of cyber threats, and the severity of recent manmade and natural hazards, demand novel, interdisciplinary research approaches to this immediate challenge. The knowledge generated through this project regarding the experience of ADHD students and the impediments they face in traditional engineering education and research settings, may significantly encourage future research in learning environments, workforce development, and may ultimately broaden participation of non-traditional, underrepresented groups in engineering disciplines.
Eligibility

This program is designed specifically for students diagnosed with or showing signs of ADHD who are traditionally underrepresented and under-served in engineering programs. The NSF stipulates that participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled as Engineering Majors who have completed their sophomore or junior year by June 1, 2014. You must provide a document from your doctor or complete the self-assessment for proof of eligibility upon acceptance. Students must also have a minimum GPA of 2.8 (out of 4.0).
Application

Apply online now! Deadline is March 27th, 2015. Students will be notified of their acceptance by April 10th.

Program Details

The program combines a ten-week traditional summer REU research experience with close mentorship, specially designed seminars, brainstorming sessions, and workshops designed to address the strengths and needs of participants. Students will participate in their own original research projects in the morning and in the afternoon there will be laboratory rotations to provide a multidisciplinary research experience. Participants will have the opportunity to present their creative ideas relating their experiences from different research areas.

Duration: 10 weeks, June 1st, 2015 – August 7th, 2015
Stipend: $500 per week
Travel Reimbursement: Up to $750
Cost of Attending a Technical Conference: Up to $1,200
Housing and Food: Provided
Research Opportunities

Students will participate in one of the following research labs for their main project. Afternoon lab rotations will provide participants with research experience on other topics.

Hardware Security and Trusts
Sensor-Aided Cyber Physical System of Smart Transportation System
Bridge Weigh-In-Motion
Comprehensive Public Transportation System Access, Resilience and Connectivity
Secure Embedded Systems Design
Critical Systems Security Assessment
Additive Manufacturing of Metallic Cellular Plates for Blast and Impact Resistance
Next-Generation Bridge Columns for Multihazard Robustness
Novel Vibration Mitigation Devices for Traffic Signal Support Structures

Your Privacy

This research has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the University of Connecticut. IRB Exemption #: X14-199. The Principle Investigators of the project will do diligence to protect the privacy of each participant. The registration website will be launched on the high security server of the UConn School of Engineering. However, it should be noted that, if you are selected to participate in the program, lab directors and possible the graduate students who will be in the program will be aware of the eligibility requirement for this REU Site. If you have any questions regarding your privacy you may contact the Principle Investigator Arash E. Zaghi at zaghi@engr.uconn.edu or (860) 486-2468.
