BIO
Lloyd B. Minor, MD, is a scientist, surgeon, and academic leader. He is the Carl and Elizabeth Naumann Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, a position he has held since December 2012.

As dean, Dr. Minor plays an integral role in setting strategy for the clinical enterprise of Stanford Medicine, an academic medical center that includes the Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. He also oversees the quality of Stanford Medicine’s physician practices and growing clinical networks

With Dr. Minor’s leadership, Stanford Medicine has established a strategic vision to lead the biomedical revolution in Precision Health. The next generation of health care, Precision Health is focused on keeping people healthy and providing care that is tailored to individual variations. It’s predictive, proactive, preemptive, personalized, and patient-centered.

An advocate for innovation, Dr. Minor has provided significant support for fundamental science and for clinical and translational research at Stanford. Through bold initiatives in medical education and increased support for PhD students, Dr. Minor is committed to inspiring and training future leaders.

Among other accomplishments Dr. Minor has led the development and implementation of an innovative model for cancer research and patient care delivery at Stanford Medicine and has launched an initiative in biomedical data science to harness the power of big data and create a learning health care system. Committed to diversity, he has increased student financial aid and expanded faculty leadership opportunities.

Before coming to Stanford, Dr. Minor was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs of The Johns Hopkins University. During his time as provost, Dr. Minor launched many university-wide initiatives such as the Gateway Sciences Initiative to support pedagogical innovation, and the Doctor of Philosophy Board to promote excellence in PhD education. He worked with others around the university and health system to coordinate the Individualized Health Initiative, which aimed to use genetic information to transform health care.

Prior to his appointment as provost in 2009, Dr. Minor served as the Andelot Professor and director (chair) of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and otolaryngologist-in-chief of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. During his six-year tenure, he expanded annual research funding by more than half and increased clinical activity by more than 30 percent, while strengthening teaching efforts and student training.

With more than 140 published articles and chapters, Dr. Minor is an expert in balance and inner ear disorders. Through neurophysiological investigations of eye movements and neuronal pathways, his work has identified adaptive mechanisms responsible for compensation to vestibular injury in a model system for studies of motor learning (the vestibulo-ocular reflex). The synergies between this basic research and clinical studies have led to improved methods for the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders. In recognition of his work in refining a treatment for Ménière’s disease, Dr. Minor received the Prosper Ménière Society’s gold medal in 2010.

In the medical community, Dr. Minor is perhaps best known for his discovery of superior canal dehiscence syndrome, a debilitating disorder characterized by sound- or pressure-induced dizziness.

These scholarships are funded by a $25,000 donation from the Raytheon Corporation. Two scholarships in the amount of $12,500 each will be awarded in May 2016.

It is time to start preparing for Fall 2016 registration. All students must meet with an advisor to receive registration clearance for fall classes. You may view the registration dates on the Registrar's website. In order to register on this date, you must meet with an advisor prior to this date to get registration clearance. Students do not need special clearance to register for summer classes. Summer registration opens for all students on March 21st.

If you are currently enrolled in LRC 99, MATH 106, or do not have a math placement, you will be advised by the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising in the Academic Services Building, Room 103.

Prior to your appointment:
1.    Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes, available starting on March 28th, on the UMBC website HERE.
2.    Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3.    Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4.    Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5.    Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Fall 2016.

After your advising appointment, you will have clearance to register for classes. However, you will not be able to register until your assigned registration time. Your registration time is the earliest date and time that you may register for classes. For information about registration times, please go HERE, or check the banner on the top of your myUMBC page. If you have not attended an advising appointment, you will not be able to register when your registration time occurs.

If you have a hold on your account, it is still important that you sign up for an advising appointment. Meeting with an advisor in advance of registration means that you will not have to worry about getting advising clearance once your hold is lifted.

All Majors - Gateway not Yet Completed
Students majoring in Pre-Computer Science/Computer Science, Pre-Computer Engineering/Computer Engineering, Pre-Mechanical Engineering, Pre-Chemical Engineering, and Pre-Engineering must meet with an academic advisor in the office of Undergraduate Student Services in the College of Engineering and Information Technology. It is time to start preparing for Fall 2016 registration. All students must meet with an advisor to receive registration clearance for fall classes. You may view the registration dates on the Registrar's website. In order to register on this date, you must meet with an advisor prior to this date to get registration clearance. Students do not need special clearance to register for summer classes. Summer registration opens for all students on March 21st.

Please read the instructions below for information about how to sign up for your advising appointment.

If you are currently enrolled in LRC 99, MATH 106, or do not have a math placement, you will be advised by the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising in the Academic Services Building, Room 103.

Prior to your appointment:
1.    Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes, available starting on March 28th, on the UMBC website HERE.
2.    Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3.    Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4.    Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5.    Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Fall 2016.

After your advising appointment, you will have clearance to register for classes. However, you will not be able to register until your assigned registration time. Your registration time is the earliest date and time that you may register for classes. For information about registration times, please go HERE, or check the banner on the top of your myUMBC page. If you have not attended an advising appointment, you will not be able to register when your registration time occurs.

If you have a hold on your account, it is still important that you sign up for an advising appointment. Meeting with an advisor in advance of registration means that you will not have to worry about getting advising clearance once your hold is lifted.

All Majors - Gateway not Yet Completed
Students majoring in Pre-Computer Science/Computer Science, Pre-Computer Engineering/Computer Engineering, Pre-Mechanical Engineering, Pre-Chemical Engineering, and Pre-Engineering must meet with an academic advisor in the office of Undergraduate Student Services in the College of Engineering and Information Technology. Students may sign up for an individual appointment or participate in group advising. Group advising and individual advising require approximately 30 minutes of your time. Group advising gives you the opportunity to review your registration plans with multiple advisors in a small group setting. Individual appointments give you the opportunity to meet with an advisor one-on-one.

You will need to schedule your appointment online (beginning 3/7): http://coeadvising.umbc.edu/

Please note that you must schedule the appointment online while at the UMBC campus. You will need to select a group or individual appointment. Sign-ups for group and individual advising will begin on March 7th for appointments beginning on March 21st.

Students on academic probation are required to sign up for an individual advising appointment. They may not attend group advising.

Computer Engineering and Computer Science - Gateway Completed
Computer Engineering and Computer Science students who have completed the gateway will be assigned a faculty advisor. Faculty assignments are posted outside of ITE 204. Students may also view their advisor information in myUMBC. To access this information, follow these steps:
•   Login to myUMBC
•   Select “Topics”
•   Select “Advising and Student Support”
•   Select “My Advisors”

Please contact your faculty advisor to schedule an advising appointment.

Transfer students in their first semester at UMBC, regardless of gateway status, will not be assigned a faculty advisor, and will need to sign up for an appointment at the link provided above.

Mechanical and Chemical Engineering - Gateway Completed
Mechanical Engineering students who have completed the gateway will be assigned a faculty advisor. Students will receive email communication from the department regarding advising.

Chemical Engineering students who have completed the gateway will be assigned a faculty advisor. Faculty assignments are posted on the bulletin board across from ENGR 316.
