[6/10/2010]--On Saturday April 24, 2010, mechanical engineering students Phillip Kendrick, Steven Sumedi (UMBC ASME student section President), and Caroline Scheck attended the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) at Drexel University for District A, which encompasses most of the northeastern states in the USA. Phillip and Caroline were participating in the Old Guard Oral Presentation competition.

In Caroline’s own words, “For the past six months or so, I've been looking at the effects of ultrasonic impact on this aluminum alloy, and was excited to be able to present my findings. While technical content in the presentations is not paramount or even required for the conference, the focus being on presentation skills, I was still happy to be able to present research I was doing.”

Besides the $50 technical content prize, the first place award came with a $500 cash prize, and a trip to Vancouver, Canada in November for ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition to compete in the finals for the Old Guard Oral Competition. In her comments regarding this outcome Caroline said, “I'm very excited about this opportunity as I'll be competing against students from all over the world and I hope to represent UMBC well.”
