[6/1/2010]--Dr. Weidong Zhu joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty at UMBC in 1999. He received a dual B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and Computational Science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China in 1986. He went on to receive the M.S. (1988) and Ph.D. (1994) degrees from the Arizona State University and the University of California at Berkeley respectively. Prior to joining UMBC, Dr. Zhu served at the capacity of a Visiting Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan in 1995 and 1996 respectively. He also served as an Assistant Professor at the University of North Dakota and the Chinese University of Hong Kong during the periods of 1997-1999 and 1994-1997 respectively. At UMBC, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2004 and soon afterwards in 2007 to the rank of Professor. Professor Zhu is recognized as an outstanding teacher and researcher. He serves as an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics. He was also named a Visiting ChangJiang Scholar Chair Professor in General Mechanics by the Ministry of Education of China.
Professor Zhu was nominated to become an ASME Fellow by Professor Steve Shaw of Michigan State University on behalf of the ASME Technical Committee on Vibration and Sound. In his nomination, Dr. Shaw states,
“Dr. Zhu is an intemationally recognized researcher and educator whose expertise spans dynamics, vibrations, controls, and structural health monitoring. He integrates analytical techniques, computational methods, and experimental validation to address problems of fundamental and practical interest. He has made seminal contributions in the areas of distributed-parameter system vibrations and vibration-based methods of system identification and structural damage detection. His work has helped advance the performance and safety of elevators and other systems with translating mass and time-varying characteristics, and he has developed novel methods for experimentally determining structural properties of frame structures.”
In his email to Dr. Zhu, Dean DeVries states, “This is wonderful news for you and for the Department! This is, as they say, a membership "grade of distinction" that you are elected to by peers with only a few percent of ASME's more than 100,000 members around the world achieving Fellow status.”
Recognizing the importance of this rare achievement, in his email to Dean DeVries Professor Carmi, Interim Chair of Mechanical Engineering states, “We just got word that our colleague Weidong Zhu was elected Fellow of ASME. This is a great honor and we would like to congratulate our new Fellow and wish him all the best for the future.”
