[11/8/2010]--Four Northrop Grumman Corporation employees were honored this weekend at the annual conference of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Linda Reed and Wendy Schauer Landwehr received the Fellow Grade Member award, Debbie Edwards Veihdeffer received the Work-Life Balance Award and Helen M. Phillips ('98 BS '01 MS Mechanical Engineering) received the Emerging Leader in Construction and Manufacturing Award.
Reed and Schauer Landwehr were honored in recognition of continuous service to the advancement of women in the engineering profession.
Reed is a senior engineer and master program planner, a key leadership position for program execution, for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems sector in El Segundo, Calif. She previously served as director for mission assurance, space programs, for Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems sector's Navigation Systems Division and as director for mission excellence infrastructure for Northrop Grumman Space Technology sector. Reed is also a six sigma master black belt, and mentored fifteen teams in cost reduction exercises that saved the company millions of dollars. Earlier, she was a technology product area director for RF products, responsible for integrated microelectronics technology and production.
A 21-year and senior life member of SWE, Reed's activities on behalf of the Los Angeles section were recognized with the Loring Nicholson Award, which has been presented only seven times in the history of the Los Angeles section. Reed earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electronic engineering, from California State University, Long Beach and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Arts and Sciences from Michigan State University.
Schauer Landwehr, an award winning software engineer at the company's Electronic Systems sector in Rolling Meadows, Ill., produces software that interfaces with electronic systems. With more than 20 years experience in software engineering, she currently is one of the leaders of an effort to standardize to user interface of a widely used software product. She is responsible for process improvement, customer support, risk management, estimating and project planning, and also oversees requirements analysis, design, coding and testing.
A senior life member of SWE, Schauer Landwehr has held a variety of positions at the organization's local, regional, and national levels, including Chicago Regional section president and Procedures Committee chair. She earned her Master of Science degree in computer science from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Family & Consumer Science, Dietetics from Eastern Illinois University.
Edwards Veihdeffer was honored for creating programs that help women engineers and other employees balance the commitments of career, life and family.
The director of work-life integration for the company's Electronic Systems sector in Baltimore, she is responsible for the development, implementation and assessment of a broad range of work-life programs that directly support the company's efforts to increase employee engagement and enhance its reputation as a preferred employer. She was previously a human resources manager for engineering and manufacturing and also served as the manager of learning and development for the sector.
Edwards Veihdeffer serves as the Human Resources focal point for three sector-level employee resource groups with more than 5,000 members and is the project lead for two successful STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) educational outreach programs for teachers. She earned a Master of Science degree in applied behavioral science and human resources development from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from West Virginia University.
Phillips ('98 BS '01 MS Mechanical Engineering) was honored as a future leader in construction and manufacturing. As the enterprise product team leader for the design and manufacturability of next-generation transmit/receive modules at the company's Electronic Systems sector in Baltimore, she is responsible for balancing thermal, power handling, cost, producibility and electrical requirements in the development of advanced electronic components.
She has successfully led interdisciplinary teams of engineers through concept development, design, build and testing for a wide range of products including state-of-the-art microcircuits. Phillips has been honored by the company for her work, receiving the 2009 Presidential Leadership Award for Innovation and Technology. She earned Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Syracuse University.
