Dean Keith J Bowman is pleased to announce that Marc Olano, associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering, has accepted the position of associate dean of academic programs and learning (ADAPL) for the College of Engineering and Information Technology, starting August 14, 2021. Olano received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of North Carolina in 1998, and joined the department of computer science and electrical engineering at UMBC in 2002.
Olano's research focus and expertise is on real-time 3D graphics and rendering, including applications of graphics processors to games, visualization, and computation for non-graphics applications. He manages the computer science game development track, which was established in 2007 and is a collaborative effort with the visual arts department. Olano brings to the position a passion and enthusiasm for student learning and cross-disciplinary collaborations for learning. He previously served as the undergraduate program director for computer science. In his new position as ADAPL, Olano succeeds Helena Mentis, professor of information systems, who held the position since 2018.
