Deceptive techniques and impact on user experience

<Tagline>Rick Forno shares how tech companies affect decision making</Tagline>

UMBC’s Rick Forno has brought to light some important concerns about technology users’ experiences with decision-making related to their devices. Forno, senior lecturer and assistant director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity, wrote a piece for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Groups Design of Communication conference in October 2019 about practices that technology companies employ to coerce users into making decisions against their interests.

These decisions often come in the form of accepting software updates or new security measures on devices without users being certain about what those updates will mean in terms of user experience, Forno explains. While the installation of updates, for instance, might seem harmless at first, it can fall into a behavior that Forno and other researchers call “dark patterns.”

Dark patterns describe techniques that companies utilize to get users to act in a certain way, often without their informed consent, or with them realizing the implications of their actions. For example, this includes encouraging a user to blindly click a button that allows a company to do something they want that the user might not otherwise approve. Dark patterns can violate the trust that users have in their technology, but they are often employed because they can be profitable.

One common example of this practice manifests when iPhone users are prompted to install software updates. An iPhone will prompt a user to enter their passcode to “install updates tonight” in such a way that it looks like the user has no choice but to install them. The fine print underneath displays text saying, “remind me later,” suggesting that eventually the user will need to make the update, so they might as well do it now. In this case, a user might be misled to believe that updates are mandatory rather than optional, and Apple makes the installation of updates the more likely choice in this scenario.

With Apple’s exposed behavior in planned obsolescence, or slowing down old iPhones intentionally, many users may want to avoid software updates at all costs out of concern for the longevity of their devices or the fear of an update causing apps to malfunction, says Forno. In many cases, downloading an Apple software update might be contrary to the better interests of users, at least until the new update is vetted by others using the same devices and applications.

Another example of dark patterns is Facebook beginning to suggest that users consent to facial recognition. The company touts its potential benefits for protecting a user’s account security without including warnings about privacy concerns.

Forno believes the most practical solution is informing users about how companies may act in ways that may lead to users taking actions contrary to their own interests. This is not an easy task, but the first step is to encourage users to read the fine print within any agreement or request for consent. Users can opt out of new updates that have not been properly vetted, and refuse services that will not provide them with any value.

Forno recommends that people think hard about their relationship with technology, and ask what they are truly giving away when they consent to requests from tech companies. “So it always comes down to this— think before clicking, and know what you’re getting into,” says Forno. “Just because something is new and convenient doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be good for you.”

###

For additional UMBC Science and Technology stories, visit the UMBC News site.

For additional stories about the UMBC community, visit the UMBC Magazine site.

For additional COEIT stories, visit the COEIT site.

For additional COEIT Research Highlights, including Publications Spotlights, visit the COEIT Research pages on the COEIT Dean's Office site.

UMBC computer science degree comes to Shady Grove

<Tagline>New offering brings highly regarded program to more students</Tagline>

December 3, 2019 by Megan Hanks

UMBC will now offer an undergraduate degree program in computer science at the Universities at Shady Grove, a Montgomery County campus that UMBC shares with eight other Maryland public universities. This is the first of several planned undergraduate programs from UMBC’s College of Engineering and Information Technology that have been approved to be offered at Shady Grove, which also offers UMBC graduate and certificate programs in cybersecurity and data science.

The University System of Maryland and Shady Grove have been working to bring STEM programs like computer science to Montgomery County, which has a strong tech industry. Offering this program at Shady Grove reflects UMBC’s commitment to the state’s economic development and helping students access career opportunities, explains Allison Jones, director of program and partnership development in UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies.

Anupam Joshi, professor and chair of computer science and electrical engineering at UMBC, explains that the UMBC-Shady Grove program will match the current, popular undergraduate computer science program at UMBC’s main campus. This new offering brings UMBC’s highly regarded faculty and curriculum to a larger number of students in an area with high demand for computer science education.

Given the large number of Montgomery College alumni attending programs at Shady Grove, UMBC and Montgomery College have worked together closely to align their computer science curricula. This will enable computer science students to seamlessly transfer from Montgomery College to UMBC-Shady Grove. Jeannette Kartchner, former chair of computer science at Montgomery College, has been instrumental in getting the program off the ground. She is now associate program director for computer science at UMBC-Shady Grove.

With undergraduate computer science courses available at two locations, UMBC is poised to address “a huge, unmet demand for computer science education across Maryland,” in a thoughtful way that efficiently utilizes university resources, says Joshi. “We’re excited to bring this innovative program to USG.”

UMBC poised to shape national policies in computing

<Tagline>Drs. Bargteil and Mentis lead ACM special interest groups</Tagline>

November 5, 2019 by Megan Hanks

Adam Bargteil, assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering, has been named chair-elect of the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH). He will lead SIGGRAPH as chair starting Fall 2020.

With Bargteil’s election, UMBC’s College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) now has two faculty members serving as leaders of two of the ACM’s largest special interest groups. Helena Mentis, associate dean for academic programs and learning in COEIT and associate professor of information systems, has been president of the Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) since July 2018.

In these leadership roles, Bargteil and Mentis will have an opportunity to shape important policy matters, including redesigning computing education guidelines.

Bargteil’s group, SIGGRAPH, is the leading international society for computing professionals and students in computer graphics and interactive techniques, attracting people from academia, industry, and artistic communities. Bargteil helped create the ACM SIGGRAPH Frontiers program, which highlights emerging fields of research, such as machine learning, medical applications of computer graphics, and autonomous vehicles.

Bargteil plans to continue to empower the SIGGRAPH executive committee to create high-impact programming and opportunities for conversation among members when he is at the helm next year. “I’d like to continue to be proactive, and create more value for the members of SIGGRAPH,” he shares.

Over the summer, Bargteil participated in an intensive leadership program, which he says helped him prepare for his upcoming role in SIGGRAPH. Reflecting on the experience, Bargteil says that he found the selected readings, training exercises in public speaking, and opportunities to connect closely with fellow participants to be valuable for his growth as an emerging leader in computing.

SIGCHI, the group Mentis leads, is the world’s largest association for professionals in human-computer interaction. The group’s main conference attracts more than 3,500 attendees each year, and the SIG sponsors 23 specialized conferences.

Mentis is director of UMBC’s Bodies in Motion Lab, and focuses on how technologies can improve collaboration and coordination in healthcare contexts, from empowering patients to helping surgeons utilize interactive imaging. SIGCHI is a highly multi-disciplinary community that includes researchers and students in fields from sociology to mechanical engineering.
