We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Ae Lim (Ally) Yang
Hometown: Columbia, MD for the past 8 years - before that I lived in S. Korea.
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology B.S.
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I think I loved participating in the Welcome Week this year. Although it's a little intimidating to be the cheerful and non-stop laughing girl while running the games, I got to be outside of my comfort zone. Most importantly, I saw that my laughs were contagious - I think that is a positive difference, especially when you were around people who's at UMBC for the first time! I hope they got a great impression from me and everyone who was helping out at the Welcome Week events.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: If you come to the library on weekends, they leave some of the study rooms open! You don't need to have someone else with you to use the study rooms... they are great when you need time to be alone to study.
Also, next to the back door of room 120 in Bio building - great place to study - but you'll probably find me there sorry.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Science nerd who likes being alone - but I like people too I promise.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love building relationships on campus with the students and faculty. I think networking is a crucial part of your career, academic wise and more after. Also, you get to say hi to more people on your way to class!
Also, it really makes my day when I see that I have helped someone through my roles at UMBC.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I think the most important thing I have learned in college (even though it's only been a year) is that you really have to count on yourself and don't let yourself fall through. Obviously there will be people who will help you, but if you don't do the work and manage your time, it's you that will hurt not only yourself, but the people you love around you.
Most memorable thing - is passion. I have really experienced some of the biggest peak experiences in my life at UMBC, and I will never forget that.
Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: California, full 8 hours of sleep, taking notes, oh and any movies with guns and military.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
