Your UMBC Bucket List

by David Hoffman

If one of your goals was to attend the university that tops U.S. News & World Report's list of innovative national universities, congratulations; mission accomplished (5 years running). Now the question is, what's on your UMBC Bucket List: the things you want to be sure to do here while you have the chance? Sharing our lists at the start of the year has become a tradition. It's a way of holding ourselves accountable for making sure we have the experiences we don't want to miss.

I've been able to cross a lot of items off of my list over the years (this is my 11th at UMBC), but I still have plenty left: people I want to work with, events to attend, places on campus I've never seen from the inside (I'm looking at you, UMBC Observatory). This semester I'm planning to cross off the biggest and best item of them all: I'm set to complete my doctorate in Language, Literacy & Culture and become a very proud UMBC alum (in addition to being a staff member).

So what's on your bucket list? Take a look at the lists people posted last year and the year before for inspiration, then please share your list (in a comment). Then let's help each other follow through.

The Door With My Real Name On It

by David Hoffman

It was one of those rare moments when the past, present and future converge in a burst of energy and meaning. I stood at the rail above the Retriever Activities Center floor two weeks ago, looking down at the hopeful/confused/bored/excited faces of the assembled members of UMBC's entering class, and the university leaders on the platform in front of them. Diane Lee, UMBC's Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, stepped to the podium and began to speak about a poem called "The Banjo."

I knew the poem well. Twenty years earlier, I had been working, very unhappily, at a big Los Angeles law firm, spending endless days litigating over the balance sheets of companies so big that the millions of dollars at stake were drops in an ocean. I had felt completely stifled and totally insignificant. Then I had quit the firm and started searching for another path. Months later, when I walked into my law school to browse the listings in its career services center, I felt totally adrift. I wanted so badly to make a meaningful contribution with my life, and to do work through which I could enact the real me. I ran into a staff member who remembered me and listened to my story, then flashed a sympathetic smile and handed me a piece of paper, with a poem. "The Banjo," by Robert Winner. I wasn't much of a poetry reader, but of course I gave it a look.

The narrator works at a job among rigid people camouflaged in their business suits,

while somewhere in the life I forgot to live,
an old rapscallion banjo sleeps with dust.

Feeling trapped in his own life, he imagines bringing the banjo to work and strumming, strumming to disrupt that world and wake the people in it to dancing. But it is a vision he does not know how to fulfill. The poem's last two, haunting lines captured my own dilemma perfectly:

It’s hard to know which life is sleep
Or where the door is with my real name on it.

That poem became a way of accessing and staying true to myself. The image of the door with my real name on it came to define my hopes for my professional life. When Diane Lee offered up "The Banjo" as a source of inspiration to the newest members of the UMBC community, it was as if she was sending a message back in time to my younger self: Have no fear, for one day you will work with others to build your doors together, at a university where people are eager to embrace and develop their best selves, and to enact their identities and purposes through meaningful contributions to the common good.

I'd love to hear about the poems, songs and books that have made a difference for you. What words and tunes have helped to define and transform you? What are the stories that connect you to them?

Undercover Trombone Player

by Craig Berger

I began playing the trombone when I was 10. I remember gazing at the shiny new instrument my parents had purchased and feeling surprised. I couldn't stay up past 9:00, but they were entrusting me with this?

After a couple of weeks, the novelty faded. There was the unpleasant task of lugging a large awkwardly-shaped case to school one day a week, and my peers quickly let me know what they thought of my new habit. Most important to me, I just wasn't good. Why would I spend time doing something that wasn't fun and that I couldn't master? (I still am thankful to my parents--not only for their financial investment in my invisible talent, but also for their refusal to allow their bleeding ears to mute their encouragement.)

As I moved into junior high and high school, the feelings of insecurity, the monotonous exercises and scales, and the stinging lips slowly morphed into a recognition that this was something worth doing. For the first time I was committing to a long-term endeavor that was simultaneously challenging and fun. I took private lessons and played in community bands over the summer. I connected with people four times my age--including my saxophone-playing great-grandmother, whose musical inclinations I inherited--and developed additional layers of appreciation for what I was doing. I learned I could take the very tool my parents provided me years before and use it to let the world know how hard I had worked (and ultimately play myself into a new, better trombone, also purchased by my parents). I also began to feel a connection with the music I was playing. In addition to mastering the mechanics of operating a trombone, I learned terms like legato, adante, and fortissimo, and began to see music as art. I also used music to connect with people my own age; nearly all of my friends during that time were in band.

Despite all that I took away from the experience of playing the trombone, I haven't opened my trombone case in several years. I didn't exactly make one grand decision to quit, but it was more a development that took place over time. After my undergraduate experience, other activities--job-hunting, moving, graduate school--filled the void in time. Every now and then, I will nostalgically listen to music I've played and think about the personal memories and lessons ensconced in those harmonies. As I begin a new movement in my own life (I am getting married next month), I am hopeful that I might soon find ways to re-engage this lapsed piece of my identity.

What about you? What talents or aspects of your identity have fallen by the wayside that you may wish to recapture?

In our writing intensive INDS 330 Ways of Knowing seminar, we examine the interdisciplinary work of artists, social scientists and scientists, and I am often amazed at the fresh insights that students bring to discussions. A: How important it is for students to "own" their choice of major and career. I meet with quite a few students who say, "I cannot continue with my 'parental expectation major'! Now I want to follow my interests and passion for___." When we let others choose for us, we can miss our calling or run into dead ends in our lives. I am grateful that UMBC has programs like INDS that allow students to align their intellectual interests, research and creative ideas, with a variety of courses that result in a meaningful (and valuable) learning experience.
