I love watching people fill out their voter registration forms almost as much as I love having conversations about where the best pizza is in Arbutus or Catonsville. Being able to represent UMBC in different facets is really rewarding and exciting.</span><br><span><br></span><span>I also really enjoy having conversations with people who think differently than I do. The great thing about UMBC is that we are a diverse campus, not only in terms of where we are from or what we look like, but in how we think. The best thing about UMBC is having the ability to learn something new from someone different every day.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><strong><span>Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?</span></strong><br><div><strong></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>The most important thing I've learned at UMBC is to have an open mind and take chances. I've spent much of my life being afraid of introducing myself to new people. When I came to college, I forced myself to be the person that I've always wanted to be. That meant saying hello to people, joining clubs, and participating in discussions. I went from not raising my hand in class, to giving a speech for 400 people in the UC Ballroom. I'm proud of the changes I've made, and the partnerships that have helped me do so.</span><br><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><strong><span>Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"</span></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>The Atlanta Braves, coffee, wedding cake shows, sleeping, Aaron Sorkin, stuffed animals, reading, and knitting.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><strong><span>Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?</span></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>I've had a lot of really great opportunities at UMBC and worked on a lot of great projects, but my favorite was planning and hosting the Election Night Extravaganza in 2012 to celebrate the presidential election. I get really excited about democracy and government, and this was the perfect moment to encapsulate my UMBC experience. The Commons was packed with good people, good conversations, fun games, and pizza. I'm really proud of the work that we did so that everyone could enjoy themselves, and I'll always remember where I was the first time I learned the results of my vote. It was a great experience.</span><br><div><div><span><br></span></div></div><div><div><em><span><a href="http://cocreateumbc.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Co-Create UMBC</a> is a blog for and about UMBC, written by David Hoffman and Craig Berger from the Office of Student Life. From summer and winter training to the RA class, this job is full of ways to engage in self learning and development. As a McNair Scholar I have had the opportunity to engage in research and travel, I have made some wonderful friends and memories through my involvement. As a webmaster I learn about how UMBC is using prominent new technologies to make our campus more web friendly and I get to design a space that thousands of people will interact with.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><strong><span>Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?</span></strong><br><div><strong></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>In college, little things seem significant. Wear the wrong shirt and you're labeled a loser for life. Plant a wet one on your girlfriend and once you break up, everybody whispers you're the worst kisser ever. As cliche as it is, life goes on. College is the time where I am exposed to the most amount of people that have the potential to be my friends. So I have to find the person I want to become by exposing myself to all different sorts of people, every chance I get. </span><br><span><br>At UMBC, I have learned how important initiative is. As I grow up, less people are telling me what to do. It's all up to me to get the job done. I have to start taking charge of my own life because ultimately what I become will be a product of my own choices and decisions. </span><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><strong><span>Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"</span></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><span><span>A: R</span></span>unning through trails, eating good food, traveling the world, authentic relationships, and lifelong learning.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><strong><span>Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?</span></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>There are plenty of things about the UMBC campus that I enjoy. Pig pen pond for a walk, the balcony of the physics building on a calm spring day, the CERA trail for runs, using the skywalks that connect the academic buildings for when weather gets rough, admin building breakfast after a workout at the RAC, and many more. Although I will miss these things as I graduate UMBC, I will never forget the journey. </span><br><span><br>Oh and….“there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” —Christopher Robin</span><div><div><span><br></span></div></div><div><div><em><span><a href="http://cocreateumbc.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Co-Create UMBC</a> is a blog for and about UMBC, written by David Hoffman and Craig Berger from the Office of Student Life. It's so incredible to be around people that are constantly looking for ways to enrich the lives of UMBC students, and the fact that I get to be a part of it all is amazing. A huge part of what I do is promoting and documenting various events on campus, which gives me a chance to attend events that I might not have gone to on my own, and a great opportunity to meet people I otherwise might not have ever had the chance to meet!</span></span><br><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Along with promoting events, SEB is what makes many amazing events come to life on campus. From planning an event from scratch to actually helping run it, being involved in the process is extremely rewarding.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Mostly recently, when I joined Alpha Sigma Alpha, I became part of the amazing Greek community on campus. The impulse of each generation to invent or appropriate its own words for “great!” (cool, rad, hot, tight, on point, etc.).</span><br><span><br></span></div><div><span>3. The occasional, usually brief interval in which all of the inanimate objects you encounter (your car keys, hairbrush, sandwich) slip out of your hands, malfunction, break, get in your way, or otherwise hinder your progress.</span><br><span><br></span><span>4. The turning point when you decide to pursue the major and career path you really want, rather than those you had felt pressured or obligated to pursue.</span><br><span><br></span><span>5. The point in the semester at which it's just completely impossible not to have arrived at a long break, and yet weeks remain.</span><br><span><br></span><span>6. Moments that will, in retrospect, turn out to be the beginnings of stories that define you (e.g., meeting your future significant other for the first time), but which, when they occur, seem perfectly ordinary.</span><br><span><br></span></div><div><span>8. The problem of being only 80% sure you've remembered someone’s name correctly, but being beyond the point in your acquaintance when it is reasonable to ask.</span><br><br></div><div><span>9. The point at which the awfulness of an experience starts to be diminished by anticipation of the awesome status update you'll soon be able to share on social media.</span><br><span><br></span><span>11. The moment when someone offers a friendly, parting thought and you say, "You, too!," when it doesn't apply to them.</span><br><span><br></span><span>12.
