Invitation to Apply to Be a Student Member of the IRB

The Institutional Review Board (IRB), the formally designated UMBC committee to approve, monitor, and review research involving humans is currently accepting applications from students to join for academic year 2013-2014. Students are considered full members of the board. Student members review research protocols, attend meetings, and vote on issues with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects. The board typically meets 5 times during the academic year: October, December, February, April and June. Meetings are on Mondays from 10 am-12 pm.

This is a terrific opportunity to learn about ethical issues related to research. Also, being a member of the IRB looks good on a curriculum vitae or resume. Please contact Dr. Susan Sonnenschein, IRB Chair, (sonnensc@umbc.edu) no later than June 7, 2013 if you wish to apply. Your email should include a copy of your curriculum vitae or resume and a few sentences describing your research interests and experience. We are particularly interested in people who have had research experience with human participants.

Additional information about the IRB may be found at http://my.umbc.edu/groups/compliance/documents/165

Advance Registration for Fall 2013 - ONE WEEK LEFT!

The last group of currently enrolled students will become eligible for Advance Registration on Tuesday, April 9th - just one week away! Registering in a timely manner helps you have the best possible selection of courses available to a student of your credit-count standing, and helps keep you on track for your degree.

Shortly after the 9th, General Registration will begin. This allows degree- seeking students who are NOT registered for Spring 2013 - plus all returning non-degree-seeking students - to begin signing up for classes. You may start to see some of those critical or popular courses fill up!

So, what do you do if you have an unpaid bill that's going to prevent you from registering right away, or if you are not sure if you will be coming back to UMBC in the Fall (for whatever reason)?

SEE YOUR ADVISOR ANYWAY!

Your faculty and staff advisors are focused on meeting with you during this time of the semester. If you miss this opportunity to meet with them, and your situation changes in a way that allows you to enroll at UMBC for the Fall, it can be very difficult to catch up with them during the summer months. Take advantage of their attention now!

Meeting with your advisor and getting Registration/Advising Clearance doesn't cost you anything but time, and doesn't obligate you to register. What it CAN do is make the registration process easier if you become able to register on very short notice.

Take some time to check this off your "To Do" list - you may be glad that you did!
