    <div class="html-content"><div><div>Translational Life Science Technology (TLST) is a new UMBC program launching in Fall 2018 at UMBC's Universities at Shady Grove campus. This major is designed for students who want to be competitive in the bioscience world of today and tomorrow, combining the theory of a traditional life science degree with real-world applications used by scientists in academic and industry research.</div><div><br></div><div>Master critical skills such as analytical thinking, data analysis, and data evaluation as you develop a comprehensive understanding of cell biology, biochemistry, lab instrumentation, statistics, epidemiology, and biochemical engineering.</div></div><div><br></div><div><strong><em>Students accepted to the TLST program for the Inaugural Cohort in Fall 2018 can receive a scholarship of $1000 for two years.*</em></strong></div><div><br></div><div><div>Program pre-requisites:</div><div>BIOL141 - Foundations of Biology: Cells, Energy &amp; Organisms</div><div>BIOL142 - Foundations of Biology: Ecology &amp; Evolution</div><div>BIOL275 - Microbiology</div><div>BIOL302 - Molecular &amp; General Genetics</div><div>BIOL300L - Experimental Biology Laboratory</div><div>CHEM101 - Principles of Chemistry I</div><div>CHEM102 - Principles of Chemistry II</div><div>CHEM102L - Introductory Chemistry Laboratory I</div><div>CHEM351 - Organic Chemistry I</div><div>CHEM351L - Organic Chemistry Laboratory I</div><div>MATH151 (or MATH155) - Calculus &amp; Analytical Geometry I (or Applied Calculus)</div><div>PHYS111 (or PHYS121) - Basic Physics I (or Introductory Physics I)</div></div><div><br></div><div><div>Questions about the program?     <div class="html-content">Attention Life Science Majors -- <br><br>The CNMS Advising Office is in the process of completing advising assignments for FALL 2018 registration. Please keep in mind that advising is mandatory at UMBC and that you will want to follow up with your assigned academic advisor upon receiving our email notification which is set to be released sometime during the <strong>week of March 12th</strong>. <Title>UMBC Grand Challenge Scholars Program</Title>

    <div class="html-content">The newly-launched Grand Challenge Scholars Program is centered around the National Academy of Engineering's 14 Grand Challenges facing society:<div><br></div><div> * Sustainability: Solar energy, Clean water access, Energy from</div><div>   fusion, Nitrogen cycle, Carbon sequestration</div><div> * Health: Better medicines, Health informatics</div><div> * Security: Urban infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Prevention of nuclear</div><div>   terror</div><div> * Knowledge / Joy of Living: Personalized learning, Virtual reality,</div><div>   Reverse engineering the human brain, Tools for scientific discovery</div><div><br></div><div>Students in the program will complete three one-credit GCSP seminars (GCSP 301, 302, and 401), exploring the Grand Challenges and designing a personalized program around their interests.  Each student will identify GC-related experiences in research, interdisciplinary work, entrepreneurship, global perspectives, and service learning.  Students who successfully complete all program requirements will receive formal designation at graduation as an NAE Grand Challenge Scholar.
