Grades released today: some things to keep in mind
Greetings, CNMS students!
This is a friendly reminder to check your grades today! This is important for a number of reasons:
-If you are on academic probation, your grades will determine whether you stay on probation or go up for suspension, although you will not be notified of this until January 10, when transcripts are updated.
-While your individual grades will be posted today, your
transcript with cumulative GPA will not be updated until January 10! If you need your cumulative GPA to fill out internship applications or want to know whether you will be on academic probation, you can calculate your GPA using this handy tool:

-Have you earned your prerequsites AND the grades you need in those prerequisites to continue? Many STEM courses require you to earn a C or better in prerequisites! If you did not earn a C or better, you should think about repeating a course. Planning to go to medical school, for instance? You will need a C or better in chemistry!
-Use your grades from the fall to reflect on a balanced schedule and think about any changes you might want to make in the spring semester.

CNMS ADVISING -- FALL 2021 KICK OFF!
Advising Services and Contact Information
CNMS Advising is excited to welcome students back to campus and to officially kick off the Fall 2021 semester!
Our office will be holding both in-person and online appointments throughout the schedule adjustment period (until September 14th).
During this time -- and to comply with social distancing restrictions -- walk-in advising appointments will NOT be permitted however we will be offering same day appointment opportunities.
All advising sessions can
be scheduled via our online appointment calendar here. As a reminder -- however --
CNMS
Advising support is reserved for new/incoming students as well as those
returning students who are assigned to Christine Powers, Julie Crosby,
or Kandace Racine.
Advisors
will be adhering to university social distancing and health/safety
strategies. Please come to your meeting prepared with any materials
(laptops, smartphones, etc.) that may be needed.

Welcome Week Toolkit here for a refresher on some of the ways to utilize advising and campus resources in order to ensure a successful semester.

The First-Generation Workgroup & Off-Campus Student
Services Office are kicking off the 2021 First-Generation Peer
Mentoring Program (FGPMP).
*** Additional information regarding this opportunity can be found here as well as below. Consider participating and making a difference! ***
FGPMP is
designed to support the success of current first-time and full-time
first-generation students at UMBC. At UMBC, first-generation students
are defined as "a student who is the first in their immediate family to
attend college". Students that take part in this program can expect to
meet other first-generation students and become a part of a large,
supportive community that works to share resources, find lasting
friendships and connections, and create an impactful college experience.
Please be aware that in order to be a mentor,
you must have completed at least one year as a student at UMBC and
mentees must be within their first year at UMBC.
Participants
of the FGPMP will also have the opportunity to take part in a series of
activities and workshops designed to enrich students both personally
and professionally.
Some additional benefits of taking part in the FGPMP include:
Developing transferable and marketable skills to enhance professional experience
Cultivation of leadership, self-management, and organizational skills

CNMS Advising Assignments are LIVE!
Check your myUMBC email for more information.
Registration for Spring 2021 is just around the corner which means that you will want to plan to meet with your assigned major advisor ASAP in order to discuss your academic plan and receive advising clearance.
Keep in mind that advising is MANDATORY every semester and must be completed prior to registration for the upcoming school term.
Check your myUMBC email (sent on 10/15) for your advisor assignment and further instructions.
Advisor assignments can also be found via the CNMS Advising website
here (by major).
Newly or recently declared life science majors who do not have a listed advisor assignment should contact
CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.
Most importantly, please follow any instructions provided by your assigned advisor regarding their procedure for scheduling an advising appointment and the deadlines that they set. Considering the majority of faculty and staff are working remotely, students should anticipate for their advising session to be held virtually.
The 3rd Annual
Major Event is coming up on
Wednesday, October 21st!
This
year's virtual event will consist of four separate programs throughout
the day. Students are welcome to attend as many programs as they'd like!
Pre-Registration, along with information on each program, is now
available on our
Major Event website. **You can also use our website to access the event on the day of, if you choose not to pre-register.**
Students who attend any of our programs will be eligible to earn a free Major Event t-shirt and sticker (both of which will be mailed directly to your home after the event)!
We look forward to seeing you virtually next week!
