CNMS Summer Book Club Challenge -- JULY PICKS! Stay academically fit this summer and enter to win!

CNMS Advising is going strong with our SUMMER BOOK CLUB CHALLENGE! The whole point of the challenge -- read ANYTHING but do it regularly! It’s like you are exercising your reading muscles and keeping them toned for the fall! Even 20-30 minutes of reading a day for at least 4-5 days of the week will help. Fiction, non-fiction, magazines, graphic novels, journals, you name it – we want to know about it! 


CNMS Advising will be offering a fiction, non-fiction, and staff pick every month – all with themes directly related to your interests, majors, and careers. We will also host a virtual book club every month in order to discuss our picks and find out more about yours! This is also a great way to meet your peers!

Spending some time every day with a book or an article, no matter what the topic, will help you learn to focus on what you're reading and keep your skills sharp all summer.

If you would like to stick to something science-y, but maybe not as technical as a scientific paper, you might try reading an article or two from Science or Nature  (there are scientific papers in these, too, if you're feeling ambitious). Note: if you hit a paywall on either of these, UMBC has a subscription. Follow this link to step-by-step instructions for accessing journals from off-campus using UMBC's subscription, if you haven't done that before. 

If you have absolutely no idea where to start, you might try browsing Goodreads (they have user-generated lists of books usually with a certain theme or target audience) or stopping in at your local public library and asking a librarian for help finding something to read in a certain topic, theme, or genre (they usually love helping people find reading materials that serve their needs).

CNMS Advising is still open and active over the summer semester and while our focus does shift to incoming students and Orientation advising, we are still available to all assist all of our assigned students. 

In order to stay in touch, we strongly encourage you to follow us on Instagram (@cnmsadvising) in addition to keeping up with your myUMBC email for event updates and announcements. You can expect various academic/success workshops, book club communications, and virtual open house invitations over the next few months. Stay tuned!

As a reminder, your Spring 23 advising assignments will remain in effect throughout the summer and can viewed here. 

If you are an incoming student, please follow up with any member of the CNMS Advising team via our joint email --  CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu-- until you receive your specific advisor assignment during the Fall Advising Season (early to mid October). 

CNMS Advising will be open for walk-in advising support on Tuesdays from 10AM-12PM ; 1PM-3PM in UC 205.
