Welcome to the Fall 2023 Semester! Start the semester off strong with these helpful reminders!
Welcome new and returning Retrievers! CNMS Advising is excited to have everyone back on campus and we are eager to help you tackle the fall semester!

Some important reminders/updates are as follows: 

1.) The CNMS Advising Office will be holding walk-in office hours for advising support Mo-Th 10AM-12PM & 1PM-3PM in UC 205. If you are a new/incoming student please feel free to drop by at any time. Returning students should follow up with their assigned advisor (see here). Advisors can assist with schedule adjustments, registration troubleshooting, and general questions. Walk-in advising support is on a first come, first served basis and may result in a lengthy wait time during busy hours. Scheduled appointments can be arranged via email (CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu). 

2.) The last day of schedule adjustment (i.e. last day to add/drop/swap your classes) is Wednesday, September 13th.  Make sure that you are happy with your classes, that you are FULLY registered for a minimum of 12 credits (if you need to be a full-time student), and that you have established a balanced plan for the semester. Feel free to check in with your assigned advisor if you have any questions/concerns. First semester students can follow up with CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.

3.) Take some time to update your record! Check your myUMBC account to determine/confirm your declared major(s). If your record does not accurately reflect your plans you can submit an updated Declaration of Major Form HERE. When completing the form, be sure to declare/ADD your new major intentions as well as remove/DELETE any unwanted programs.

One thing it's really important to keep in mind: you need to take care of it! (Your mind, that is.) Christine Powers, our CNMS Assistant Director for Student Success, will take you through some ways to decompress from some deep studying, consider your nerves and anxieties, and keep your mental health in check, including campus resources. 

11:00 - Total Academic Reset with Alison Larson (Academic Success Center)
Come learn about all the amazing ways you can get help at the Academic Success Center, from scheduled tutoring to meeting with an advocate who can help you through anything you might be dealing with. All these services are INCLUDED in your student fees - you don't have to pay extra for them!

11:30 - Science Career Sculpt with Adam Morris (Career Center)
Join our CNMS Career Center Liason Adam to learn about all the ways the Career Center can serve you during your time on campus! We'll cover internships, job search process, and the types of jobs you can get with a STEM degree from UMBC.

1:00 - Transfer Powerup with Julie Crosby, CNMS Advising Transfer Specialist
Incoming transfer student? Come and learn about all the resources we have for you on campus! Julie Crosby, Transfer Advisor will go through all the important things to keep in mind for the smoothest possible transition to UMBC.

1:30 - Academic HIIT
Much like High Intensity Inverval Training at the gym, it's a technique you can use while studying to help you make the most out of your limited time. Learn about how to use the Pomodoro Method and why it's so effective for learning!

2:00 - Science Muscle Mechanics
There's a LOT that goes into being a scientist! In this session, we'll cover the importance of different competencies to develop that aren't necessarily just 'know all the stuff' - resilience, the scientific method, and more!

2:30 - Research Revolution with Jeff Leips (Department of Biology)
Interested in getting involved in on-campus research in a professor's lab? Join Dr. Jeff Leips, one of our biology professors, to learn about gow to get a coveted spot in a lab, what you'd be doing on a day-to-day basis in an on-campus lab, and why it's so important.

Intensive deep work on your own is essential to learning, but studying with a group can be just as important! We'll talk you through the how, where, and why of study groups and give you information about our Study Group Socials, which we host for first-year BIOL and CHEM courses so that folks with compatible schedules can form study groups.

You might think all you need for graduate or professional (think: medical or dental) school is a high GPA, but there are LOTS of skills that it's key you develop in these next few years to prepare! Having a successful first week of class is one of the best things you can do to set yourself up for a great semester. We'll teach you all our tips and tricks to have an amazing first week -- and you can join us during the first week of classes for an extended version of this workshop.

Wondering how to meet other STEM students? Looking for an upperclassman to give you good advice on how to kill it in your first semester of chemistry? CNMS Advising is going strong with our SUMMER BOOK CLUB CHALLENGE! The whole point of the challenge -- read ANYTHING but do it regularly! It’s like you are exercising your reading muscles and keeping them toned for the fall! Even 20-30 minutes of reading a day for at least 4-5 days of the week will help. Fiction, non-fiction, magazines, graphic novels, journals, you name it – we want to know about it! 


CNMS Advising will be offering a fiction, non-fiction, and staff pick every month – all with themes directly related to your interests, majors, and careers. We will also host a virtual book club every month in order to discuss our picks and find out more about yours! This is also a great way to meet your peers!
