Applications Now Open for 2024-2025 Beckman Scholars Program

The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences is excited to announce that the application for the 2024-2025 Beckman Scholars Program cohort is now open!
The Beckman Scholars Program at UMBC, funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, aims to support undergraduate students with a committed interest in research in the biological and chemical sciences in pursuit of an MD/PhD. Eligibility for this program is limited to students who major in a chemical or biological sciences discipline (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology) and show a demonstrated interest in pursuing an MD/PhD degree upon completion of an undergraduate degree at UMBC.
Students selected to participate in the program will be eligible for financial and programmatic support.
Involvement in the Beckman Scholars Program would begin upon:
1) completion of the online application;
2) acceptance of conditions in the Consent Form;
3) meeting eligibility requirements;
4) completion of the Beckman Scholars Program agreement; and
5) enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at UMBC for Fall 2024. Participation in the program will continue through August 2025.

It is important to understand that application to The Beckman Scholars Program requires:
- Documented status as either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident;
- A declared major in the biological or chemical disciplines (e.g. Biological Sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or Chemistry);
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0;
- Status as a second year or third year student for the 2024-2025 academic year (i.e. graduating from UMBC Spring 2026 or later);
- Status as a full-time undergraduate student at UMBC for the 2024-2025 academic year;
- Two letters of recommendation from science faculty members
- A written essay of purpose describing (a) Your future career interests/goals and how they align with pursuing and MD/PhD degree; (b) Your desire to be a Beckman Scholar and how you feel the program would benefit you in your pursuit of being an MD/PhD; and (c) Any current/previous research experience you have and how that experience has motivated you to pursue an MD/PhD

Want to be at the top of your game for finals?
Feeling a little apprehensive about final exams coming up? Our Success Workshop this week will focus on how to be your most productive self over the next few weeks! We'll go over:

INDS advisors will be presenting to students tomorrow, Monday, November 27 at noon in UC 115 about the option to design an individualized major related to the arts and science!
In addition to learning about the INDS major, you will hear of some degree ideas from graduates in INDS such as "Medical Illustration," "Art and Prosthetic Design," and "Science Writing." Come with your ideas of how you could merge coursework from the humanities with science classes!
This event will take place TODAY, Monday, November 27, from 12-1 PM in UC 115.
