Study Tip of the Week: Prioritization!

<Tagline>Checklists are your BEST FRIEND!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about learning how to prioritize what's important so that you can get the most out of your semester.

You can check out our weekly YouTube video on this topic here and download our accompanying handout here. But here's some information below:

1. What do I Prioritize?

It's hard to figure this out when you're suddenly the one making all the decisions in your life! List ten goals that you have for your life this semester. Personal, academic, relational, related to fitness or improvement in another area, etc.

Now...get rid of five. Choose the five most important ones, and decide that you will come back to the other five when they're more relevant.

2. Decision Fatigue

Making choices takes up more mental energy than you might think. We're faced with countless choices all day, and by the time we actually end up sitting down to study, sometimes we can be really exhausted from this. Make your life easier by putting together a schedule every week that lists all of your tasks -- when you're going to get them done and where. This will avoid stress in the moment and let you stick to your plan.

3. Use a Checklist

Checklists are an amazing motivational tool. Make a checklist every day with your list of tasks - not just for school, but personal things as well. Checking things off gives a great feeling of productivity and the list itself helps you stay on track. You can also use a color-coding system to indicate levels of priority from high to low - that's how you know what to do first!

4. Eat the Frog

Every day, start with one task that you really don't want to do. You will get it out of the way quickly, feel productive, and be motivated to keep working hard!

Want more tips? Come to our Wednesday Workshop all about prioritization this week from 12-1 PM in UC115!

Study Hall times this week:

Monday 2-3

Tuesday 11:30-12:30

Tuesday 2:30-3:30

Wednesday 11-12

Wednesday 3-4

All study halls will take place in UC115. Please no food or drink!

Study Tip of the Week: Microhabits

<Tagline>Just two minutes a day can make a huge difference!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about creating routines to build up your skills over time, showing real gains if you stick with them. This week we will be highlighting Microhabits as a technique to set you up for a productive workday, cultivate positive routines, and ultimately boost your performance in STEM courses.

You can check out our weekly YouTube video on this topic here! But here's some information below:

1. What are Microhabits?

Microhabits are small changes that you make to your daily life in order to see large gains later. They are simple and easy to accomplish, but over time, like investing your money, the returns build up exponentially.

2. Why are Microhabits Effective?

Microhabits work due to spaced repetition. This is when we intentionally study in shorter bursts with time in between to allow the material to settle effectively into our working and then long-term memories. TL;DR: the more we sleep between studying, the better we remember things!

3. The Two-Minute/Two-Problem Rule

It's really easy to do anything for two minutes, so start with that. Do two minutes of your habit - maybe that's reviewing your Anki flashcards for BIOL, or answering reading guide questions.

For problem-based courses like chemistry, math, or physics, do two problems. That's all! You'll often find that once you get started, it's easy to keep going, but just commit to two minutes a day.

Study Tip of the Week: Group Study!

<Tagline>Study with others for improved understanding and performance</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about creating strong habits that will help you stay the course all semester. This week we will be highlighting Group Study as a technique to get more out of your course content, improve your creative problem-solving and collaboration skills, and ultimately boost your performance in STEM courses.

You can check out our weekly YouTube video on this topic here! Some tips and tricks include:

1. Come up with an AGENDA for your study group. It helps to always do the same thing, like work through a weekly problem set or talk through a reading guide for your course. This way, you have a set goal for the session and you're more likely to stay on track and be able to notice progress over time.

2. Schedule a little bit of SOCIAL TIME at the end of your time together. This helps you stay focused during the actual study session, because you know you'll have a little bit of time to socialize with your friends afterwards.

3. WORK TOGETHER! Collaboration is really important for improving your creative problem-solving skills. Working with others will help you learn to see solutions from different angles. Plus, everyone benefits: those who are struggling with the material will have an improved understanding and new perspective, while those who are very familiar with the material get the advantage of teaching it to someone else, which bolsters retention.

Want more? Come to our Wednesday Workshop on Wednesday, February 14, for an interactive session on how to form study groups and use them effectively!
