Study Tip of the Week: Mid-Semester Motivation

<Tagline>It can be low - especially when the weather is nice!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about what to do when you need a little bit of mid-semester motivation. This can be difficult, especially after Spring Break! Let's get that momentum building again so you can have a strong finish to the semester.

You can check out our weekly video on this topic here. We hope you find it helpful!

1. Find Your 'Why'

It's easy to feel less motivated right now when you're really swamped. Sometimes it's hard to remember why we're here in the first place when we're bogged down and overwhelmed with work or obligations. Try putting a visual reminder of your ultimate career goal somewhere you see it a lot: on your desk, or as the background image on your phone. Remembering your 'why' can be a boost!

2. Make Checklists

Checklists are one of the most intrinsically motivating things you can do for yourself. Every night, make a list of things you need to do the following day. (We don't encourage doing this in the morning - give yourself some time between creating the list and actually getting to work.) Throughout the day, check things off as you finish them! You can use the Notes app on your phone, a widget on any of your devices, GoogleKeep, or just plain old pen and paper.

3. Create an Accountability System

Our top tip: if you're trying to get through some tough homework or study sessions, schedule them with a friend or a small group. Find a quiet place to work, have everyone decide on a task and say it out loud, and then set a timer for 50 minutes. When it's done, take 10 minutes to socialize and talk about your progress on your tasks. Repeat as many times as you like.

This Week with CNMS Advising:

Monday 3/25

12-1 - Pathways to Success with the NIH in TLC (UC115)

2-3 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with special CHEM101 support

3-4 - CNMS Grad Planning Workshop in TLC (UC115)

Tuesday 3/26

11:30-12:30 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with special BIOL141 support

2:30-3:30 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with special BIOL302 support

Wednesday 3/27

11-12 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with special BIOL142 support

12-1 - Mid-Semester Motivation Workshop in TLC (UC115)

12-1 - INDS Info Session with FREE PIZZA in UC310

3-4 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with special CHEM102 support

Study Tip of the Week: Spring Break Productivity

<Tagline>Rest and refuel!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about how to have a productive (and restful) spring break!

You can check out our weekly video on this topic here. We hope you find it helpful!

1. Rest and Have Fun! You deserve to actually take a break this week. Every day, try to do something fun. Get outside if the weather is nice! See friends, spend quality time with family, or go on a spontaneous day trip somewhere. You should also take this time to catch up on sleep.

2. Prepare for summer or fall by checking in with the folks at the Career Center - you can update your resume, talk through the internship or job search process, or even discuss whether you think you're in the right major or not. Click the above link to make an appointment!

You should also make a Handshake account if you haven't yet. This is where you can search for jobs and internships, both on and off campus!

Want to work in a research lab? Check out the Biology and Chemistry department research pages, look at what your professors are doing in their labs, and send some emails indicating your interest.

3. Be productive! Make a list this week or early in spring break of all the tasks you want to get done throughout the week, whether that's catching up on back work, getting the preliminary work done on larger assignments, or creating some new systems for memorization and learning (pro tip: we recommend using Anki).

Want more tips? Come to our Wednesday Workshop all about spring break productivity this week from 12-1 PM in UC115!

Study Hall times this week:

Monday 2-3

Tuesday 11:30-12:30

Tuesday 2:30-3:30

Wednesday 11-12

Wednesday 3-4

All study halls will take place in UC115. Please no food or drink!

We will have practice exams for CHEM102, BIOL142, and PHYS121!

Study Tip of the Week: Roadblocks

<Tagline>We all run into them -- learn how to get around them!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about dealing with pesky roadblocks, whether they're academic, social, emotional, or otherwise.

You can check out our weekly YouTube video on this topic here. We hope you find it helpful!

1. Roadblocks will always happen! Your mindset is what helps you get around them. Try to put yourself in a growth mindset - don't let them get you down for too long. Look for solutions by asking for help.

2. When talking yourself through a solution, pretend you are talking to a friend. It's easy to be hard on yourself - it's much easier to be kind to another person. Imagine what you'd say to your best friend if they came to you with the same problem. Give yourself the same advice!

3. Tips for getting around some common roadblocks in college:

Bad grade on the first test in a STEM course? Your high school study methods might not be the right thing for a college class! Have a chat with your professor and ask for study tips, or consider making an appointment with CNMS Student Success Coach Emma Barnaby

Totally overwhelmed with everything going on in your life? Think about what to put on the back burner each week, and rotate things around. If you're really stressed out, you can talk to a mental health professional on campus (at no cost to you).

Feeling lonely or isolated? Join a club on campus to meet some friends with similar interests to yours! This is a great way to make some lasting friendships and have some *real* fun - this will help you avoid academic burnout.

Want more tips?
