Study Tip of the Week: Academic Nudges

<Tagline>Motivate yourself with Ease, not Force</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week we're all about 'nudges,' or ways to set yourself up for good habits without being forceful.

You can check out our YouTube video for some hints - we hope you find it helpful!

1. What is a nudge?

We usually define the practice of nudging as a way to guide, rather than mandate, our behavior. Simply put, we’re trying to make it easier for us to complete the habits we want to build. It's very important to understand that nudging does not involve force.

2. How does it work?

Simply put, we as humans like the idea of choice, but sometimes it’s also nice to have structure. If there’s an escalator in a store, but also stairs - and an arrow is pointing to the stairs - that’s a nudge.

And more of us will take the stairs.

3. Can you give me some examples?

Task List

Willpower is a muscle that we have to exercise. Future you is more likely to do things that past you already planned. Every evening, make next day’s list of tasks.

CHEM Homework

Want to start every day with some chemistry practice problems? Pull up the website you’ll need for that just before shutting your laptop for the night.

App Help

Is there a studying/flashcard app you use? Move that to the spot where you usually keep your biggest time-wasting app. You’ll instinctively open it all the time. Move that time-wasting app somewhere else on your phone. It'll still be there for you when you decide to give some time to that (which is okay!)

This Week with CNMS Advising:

Monday 4/1

2-3 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with CHEM101 focus

3-4 - Clinical Experience Panel with Pre-Health Advising

Tuesday 4/2

11:30-12:30 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with BIOL141 focus

2:30-3:30 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115)

Wednesday 4/3

11-12 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with BIOL142

12-1 - Nudges: a Workshop on Academic Success Strategies

3-4 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with CHEM102 focus

Study Tip of the Week: How to Work in a Campus Research Lab

<Tagline>We've got helpful hints for you!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week we're all about how to find a research job on campus.

You can check out our weekly YouTube video for some hints - we hope you find it helpful!

1. Get your Resume Ready

Make sure your resume is updated and you understand what kind of message you want to be sending in your cover letters (or outreach emails) to professors on campus - visit the Career Center during drop-in hours (2-4 Monday-Thursday in Math/Psych 201) or make an appointment with a counselor!

2. Do your Homework

Check out the research happening on campus by visiting the Biology and Chemistry (or other related field of interest) research webpages. Browse through these and make a list of all the labs that interest you -- a long list is best! Read about each lab and, if you have time, you can even check out some of their publications to reference in your outreach to these professors.

You can also visit office hours with a current or former STEM professor to ask them if they have advice on which labs might be looking for undergraduate research assistants. That's the best place to start!

3. Send your emails

Write a formal, professional email to each professor whose lab interests you, making sure to write a short paragraph introducing yourself (include major, career goal, research interests, why you're interested in working in a lab, and any relevant coursework), and then write a longer paragraph about why you want to work in their lab in particular. Reference some things you read on their research websites and/or in their publications! Make sure to be polite and explain that you know they might not be taking undergraduate research assistants, but you're just reaching out to see.

You might get loads of replies, but you might only get a few! Don't bother folks who don't reply with lots of persistent nudges, but keep casting your net wide. All research experience is good experience.

This Week with CNMS Advising:

Monday 4/1

2-3 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with CHEM101 focus

Tuesday 4/2

11:30-12:30 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with BIOL141 focus

2:30-3:30 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with BIOL302 focus

Wednesday 4/3

11-12 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with BIOL142

12-1 - URCAD Scavenger Hunt workshop with pre-health advising in TLC (UC115)

3-4 - Study Hall in TLC (UC115) with CHEM102 focus

Acknowledge and Assess

Acknowledge the setback. It can be hard, but naming it is the first step to getting around it. How will we even know what to look for? On Earth, proteins form the basic structure of all living things. From amoebas to humans, all proteins are made by combining the same 20 building blocks—called amino acids—in different ways. Just as there are 26 letters in the modern English alphabet, these 20 amino acids make up an alphabet that enables and sustains all life on Earth. But what might the amino acid alphabet look like on another planet? And what Earthly applications might there be for an alternative amino acid alphabet? Join us for a talk about the work underway at UMBC, in collaboration with international partners, to build the world’s first example of an alien, or “xeno,” amino acid alphabet.

Learn about some of Dr. Freeland’s related work:
UMBC’s Steve Freeland co-leads $1.8 million research grant to predict the biochemical foundations of life beyond Earth

You are welcome to share the following flyer with others who would be interested in this event:
CNMS Discovery Series Flyer
