Registration for Spring 2025 is just around the corner which means that you will want to plan to meet with your assigned major advisor in order to discuss your academic plan and to remove your advising hold.
Keep in mind that advising is MANDATORY every semester and must be completed prior to registration for the upcoming term.
Check your myUMBC email (sent today -- October 1st) for your advisor assignment and further instructions.
Advisor assignments can also be found via the CNMS Advising website here (by major).
Newly or recently declared life science majors who do not have a listed advisor assignment should contact CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.
Most importantly, please follow any instructions provided by your assigned advisor regarding their procedure for scheduling an advising appointment and the deadlines that they set. Most faculty advisors begin offering advising appointments closer to the release of the spring schedule (October 21st).
A comprehensive chart for all registration dates/times can be found here. Initial registration times for undergraduate students will begin as early as October 29th for students who have earned 120 credits or more and will continue in descending earned credit order through to November 15th when all continuing students are eligible. You can verify your specific date/time for registration via your myUMBC account. **

Study Group Socials
Want to form a study group? We gotchu!
Interested in forming a study group but not sure how to ask strangers? We've got you covered!
Next week in The Learning Collaboratory (UC115), we'll be holding Study Group Socials. Come in any time we're open (schedule posted below) and meet others in your class, grab a snack, and sign up for a study group!
We're hoping lots of you come around the same time (hint: after your class), but no matter what time of day you come, we'll make sure you get a chance to sign up. You'll get a form to fill out where you can let us know when you're available to study on campus and we'll take care of the group formation for you!
You can of course study anywhere, but we will specifically be helping you form groups to study in TLC during open study hall hours. You'll always have access to whiteboards, calculators, and, most importantly, SNACKS! There will be practice materials for you during test weeks, suggestions for what to cover that week, and more.
If possible, please come by on the day listed for your STEM subject, but you can stop by to fill out the form any time. If there are enough people interested in group study, we'll put you together!

Welcome to the Fall 2024 Semester!
Start the semester off strong with these helpful reminders!
Welcome new and returning Retrievers! CNMS Advising is excited to have everyone back on campus and we are eager to help you tackle the fall semester!
Some important reminders/updates are as follows:
1.) The CNMS Advising Office will be holding walk-in office hours for advising support Mo-Th 10AM-12PM & 1PM-3PM in UC 205. If you are a new/incoming student please feel free to drop by at any time. Returning students should follow up with their assigned advisor (see here). Advisors can assist with schedule adjustments, registration troubleshooting, and general questions. Walk-in advising support is on a first come, first served basis and may result in a lengthy wait time during busy hours. Scheduled appointments can be arranged via email (CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu).
2.) The last day of schedule adjustment (i.e. last day to add/drop/swap your classes) is Wednesday, September 11th. Make sure that you are happy with your classes, that you are FULLY registered for a minimum of 12 credits (if you need to be a full-time student), and that you have established a balanced plan for the semester. Feel free to check in with your assigned advisor if you have any questions/concerns. First semester students can follow up with CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.
3.) Take some time to update your record! Check your myUMBC account to determine/confirm your declared major(s). If your record does not accurately reflect your plans you can submit an updated Declaration of Major FormHERE. When completing the form, be sure to declare/ADD your new major intentions as well as remove/DELETE any unwanted programs.

CNMS Advising is running weekly STEM-specific events every week in The Learning Collaboratory (UC 115) ranging from workshops to study groups. We will update the list of events every month HERE. ** Bookmark this page to stay in the loop!**

Today's tip is to pack your bag! There's enough stress on the first morning of school without worrying too much about this. Getting into the habit of packing up the night before will help you stay calm and go to sleep without waking up constantly thinking about how you need to remember to pack your charger in the morning!
Don't leave your house/apartment/dorm room for the day until you've double- (or triple-) checked your bag for everything you need! Make sure you have:
- Devices
- Textbooks (if you even have any of those...)
- Notebooks and writing implements
- Snacks
- Water bottle
- Phone, keys, wallet, student ID
- A sweatshirt (it can be coooooold in those lecture halls)
- Lunch, if you don't plan to get it on campus somewhere
- Medications, if applicable
- Anything else you might need!

First Week Survival Kit: Day 1
Are! You! Ready?!
Welcome back, Retrievers! We're so happy to see so many excited folks on campus - the anticipation in the air combined with those coooooool morning temps can mean only one thing - fall is coming!
We're coming at you every day this week with a tip for getting through this insane first week! If you're nervous, just know you're not alone. Starting college (or starting at a new college, or starting a new academic year) can be really overwhelming and most students experience some degree of anxiety, even if it's the good kind!
Today, we're reminding you to check Blackboard!!! Your professors have probably made their pages live by now, so today is a great day to read through the syllabi, make sure you understand course policies, and see if there's any pre-class work you need to do before the first day. Map out all of your classes and make sure you know the routes you'll take! Be careful to consider campus construction, because some of that is still going on (we're looking at you, Sherman stairs...)
And, related: start checking your UMBC email account every day. Maybe check it two or three times a day. You know what, while you're at it, just leave that tab open in your internet browser. Download the Gmail app (UMBC is a Google campus!) on your phone and/or tablet and turn on notifications. You don't want to miss anything, and this is primarily how your professors, advisors, and clubs will communicate with you!

This Wednesday, August 7th, UMBC will host the 27th Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fest in the University Center Ballroom and ENGR 027. If you want to know what it's like to engage in undergraduate research this is an EXCELLENT opportunity to connect with your peers and faculty research mentors to learn about research projects that you yourself may contribute to in the future! This is also a great opportunity to witness what happens at a research festival, how research posters convey information about a project, and how undergraduate researchers present on the projects that they supported.
