Apply for Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2025: An Empowering Exploration of Systemic Change in Baltimore
Application deadline is December 20
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience in which UMBC undergraduate and graduate students explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Participants build connections with local leaders, organizations, and policy makers and develop a sophisticated understanding of available resources and challenges. The program helps participants identify pathways to long-term community engagement.
This year’s ASB program will take place from Monday, March 17 – Friday, March 21, 2025. ASB participants spend much of the program in small groups (co-led by undergraduate students trained by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life) focused on exploring a specific topic in depth. ASB 2025 groups will focus on:
- Health and Patient Care Equity (co-led by Vunnathi Ankem and Natalia Cooper)
- Environmental Justice and Sustainability (co-led by Bianca Canales and Tanzila Malik)
- Reforming Juvenile Justice (co-led by Aanayah Trotman and Nyssa Vilchis)
As part of your application, you will get to identify the topic groups that interest you most.

Apply for STRiVE 2025: A Transformative Leadership for Public Purpose Program for UMBC Undergraduates
Application deadline is November 8
UMBC’s STRiVE program has inspired hundreds of undergraduate students in the past 16 years. Now it's your turn. Spend five days building community and developing skills while exploring leadership for public purpose. You will emerge with greater clarity and confidence about the contributions you want to make to your communities, especially the UMBC community.
This year’s STRiVE program will take place from Monday, January 13 – Friday, January 17, 2025. STRiVE participants will make new friends, discover their strengths and values, learn how to work more effectively in groups, envision contributions they could make at UMBC, and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. Past STRiVE participants have gotten deeply involved in campus organizations and initiatives, and have made phenomenal contributions.

Voter Registration Support
UMBC community members who would like support with registering to vote
can drop by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life or email us at
civiclife@umbc.edu. In addition, we will be providing voter registration support at tables across campus every week, in the following locations:
- Voter Registration Tabling (University Center (UC) Plaza, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.): Stop by our table to register to vote and ask any election-related questions you may have.
- Center for Democracy and Civic Life Open House (The Commons 2nd floor, room 2B24, noon – 2 p.m.): Make friends or reconnect with old ones, and learn more about the programs we will offer this semester. Applications for 2024 - 2025 due August 9, 2024
The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is seeking a graduate assistant to support a collaborative initiative to infuse civic learning in UMBC’s curriculum. The position’s major responsibilities will include research and report-writing, program coordination, preparation of communications and promotional materials, and facilitation and documentation of meetings. In addition, the graduate assistant will work in collaboration with other members of the coordinated UMBC teams pursuing curricular infusion and UMBC’s reapplication for the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification to support their shared objectives.

Hey Graduate Retrievers! We need your voice!
UMBC is participating in the National College Health Assessment. We want our health and wellbeing resources, events, and services to be tailored for our graduate students. In order to help us accomplish this, we need you to complete the National College Health Assessment.
ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS: Please check your email for the link to complete the assessment.
100 students to complete the NCHA will be randomly selected to receive $50 in Retriever Dollars.
Of all graduate students to complete the NCHA, two students will be selected to win either:
- $250 in Retriever Dollars
- A pair of Apple Airpod Pros
