Apply for the Langenberg Legacy Civic Engagement Fellowship The University System of Maryland (USM) Langenberg Legacy Program invites applicants for the prestigious Langenberg Legacy Fellowship Program. Undergraduate and graduate students who are motivated to improve the world we live in through local, justice-oriented action are encouraged to apply.

Each USM institution has been invited to nominate one student. By completing the application form, you will be requesting that UMBC nominate you for the Langenberg Legacy Fellowship Program.

Program Description from USM: “USM is committed to civic education and civic engagement, and the Langenberg Legacy is a grant program that supports this priority by funding student-led projects dedicated to civic engagement. The Langenberg Legacy evolved out of the Langenberg Lecture and Award program, which was originally established to honor former USM Chancellor Donald N. Langenberg on his retirement in 2002.

“The existential threats of our time include wealth inequality, the climate crisis, voter suppression, and widespread disinformation campaigns, among others. Students are invited to propose projects that aim to combat these threats on a small scale, promoting justice within their university community. USM encourages participation from students representing a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.”

Project Requirements:
Fellowship Benefits: Fellows will receive a $1,500 total stipend. Fellows will also be invited to participate in community building activities hosted by the USM during the coming year, such as networking meet-and-greets, professional development webinars, and events to recognize Fellows and their work.

Faculty/Staff Sponsor Guidelines:
To support successful projects, Langenberg Legacy Fellows are required to have a faculty or staff sponsor. They may be more involved with advising the Fellow throughout implementation of the project as appropriate, but the project is to be conducted and completed by the student Fellow. Faculty/staff sponsors will be invited to Langenberg Legacy community building events (to be scheduled in 2025 and 2026), including the presentation of student projects and celebration, to be held in May 2026. Sponsors will receive $500 in the spring semester of 2026, following student submission of the final project report to USM. The sponsor’s responsibilities include the items listed below:

STRiVE 2025 took place from Monday, January 13 - Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, MD. 47 UMBC undergraduate students spent five days strengthening their talents, learning to live by their values, and exploring how to deepen UMBC’s culture of mattering and belonging. The program positioned them to be co-creators of a UMBC community in which everyone can thrive.

STRiVE 2025 was facilitated by a team of coaches led by Tess McRae ’22 (Center for Democracy and Civic Life):
Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff members Carly Shearer (sophomore, computer science) and Trentqual Rhone, M.A. supported STRiVE as site coordinators.

During STRiVE, guests from UMBC visited Skycroft to meet with groups of participants exploring specific issues affecting members of the UMBC community. The guests ("stakeholders") helped participants consider how they could contribute to addressing those issues in the semester(s) ahead. The stakeholders were:
Ciara Christian and Ricky Blissett visited STRiVE 2025 at other points during the week to co-facilitate sessions with some of the STRiVE 2025 coaches. James DeVita, Ph.D. (Division of Student Affairs) visited STRiVE to share some inspiration with the participants.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who served as coaches, stakeholders, and guests, as well as to Kelly Birch, Lan Le ’21, and the entire commonvision staff team for their flexibility, patience, and incredible support with the behind-the-scenes preparation for STRiVE.

STRiVE is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life with support from the Student Government Association and PNC Bank. Since 2009, over 900 UMBC students have participated in the program and have gone on to make meaningful change on campus and beyond.

Participants build connections with local leaders, organizations, and policy makers and develop a sophisticated understanding of available resources and challenges. The program helps participants identify pathways to long-term community engagement.

This year’s ASB program will take place from Monday, March 17 – Friday, March 21, 2025. ASB participants spend much of the program in small groups (co-led by undergraduate students trained by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life) focused on exploring a specific topic in depth. ASB 2025 groups will focus on:

The program is an opportunity for UMBC community members (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) to express their thoughts and feelings about the election outcomes, the election season, and the climate of our community and society. The format is facilitated small-group conversations with a focus on listening, storytelling, and connecting.

Together Beyond programs are reflective, guided conversations about national and global events affecting members of the UMBC community. The Center for Democracy and Civic Life has been collaborating with campus partners to host occasional Together Beyond programs since November 2020, when the original programs focused on discussing thoughts and feelings about the outcomes of Election 2020.

It employs more than 16,000 faculty members and 18,000 staff members, and owns almost 1,000 buildings. Its annual operating budget is $7 billion. There are more than 160,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions.

How would you like to represent all of those students as a member of the Board of Regents, the system's governing body?

Please take a look at this description of the Student Regent position and consider applying. Please also pass the information along to friends who may be interested. The Student Regent will serve from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027, including as the voting Student Regent in 2026-2027. All applicants should be planning to graduate in spring 2027 or later.

The application deadline is Friday, November 8 at 5 p.m. Here is the application.
