<Title>Team Bananas earns top honors at SCUDEM 2021</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Team "Bananas” presented a solution to solve "Problem C: Submitted a Tweet, Now What?" in the SCUDEM VI 2021 competition, bringing home top honors.</p>
    <p>Team members were:</p>
    <ul>
    <li><strong>John Laporte</strong>, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology &amp; Bioengineering track; </li>
    <li><strong>Max Bobbin</strong>, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering &amp; Sustainability track</li>
    <li><strong>Catherine Wraback</strong>, Chemical Engineering, Traditional track</li>
    </ul>
    <p>The team worked on their solution to the problem between 23 October 2021, when the problems were released, and 14 November when the videos were submitted. See the team's approach to solving this problem <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw3noplXWrY&amp;feature=youtu.be" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">via YouTube</a>. During this time, team members successfully managed their academic responsibilities with this and other co-curricular activities, including the <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/news/post/114847/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National AICHE Jeopardy competition</a>. </p>
    <p>The team received the highest rating of 'Outstanding' for their solution for Problem C. They were one of eight who received this rating among the 26 submissions for Problem C. Only 26 teams received outstanding marks among all 106 participating teams during this year’s competition.</p>
    <p>SCUDEM — <strong>S</strong>IMIODE <strong>C</strong>hallenge <strong>U</strong>sing <strong>D</strong>ifferential <strong>E</strong>quations <strong>M</strong>odeling is a 3-student group modeling challenge that runs over multiple days culminating in a 10 minute video which is reviewed by at least 3 judges. Teams and Coaches may meet remotely. Team submissions are judged to meet one of three outcomes: Outstanding, Meritorious, or Successful.</p>
    <p>This is the third year CBEE students participated in the SCUDEM competition. Two teams participated in 2020, both earning a Meritorious rating. In 2019, three teams from CBEE participated at the in-person event at Bowie State and swept the podium (<a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/cbee/posts/88339" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">read more</a>).</p></div>

<Title>Join translational nanomedicine research group at UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Seeking self-motivated hard-working undergraduates to work at a translational nanomedicine research group at UMBC.</div><div><br></div><div>The Pan group is a diverse, multidisciplinary research team (The Laboratory of Materials in Medicine) with over hundreds of high impact factor highly cited publications in JACS, PNAS, ACS Nano, Advanced Functional Materials etc. and brings long-standing experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. Our group just moved from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign to the University of Maryland Baltimore County and University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine. With a clear focus on translating research ideas from bench to bedside, Pan group uniquely merges ‘molecule making’ with ‘device making’ for areas molecular imaging, drug delivery and biosensing.</div><div><br></div><div>The group is looking for motivated undergrads majoring in either Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Biology or Biochemistry to work with us at the ILSB from the Spring Semester. His/her projects would involve synthetic chemistry, analytical techniques for characterization, developing skills in animal cell culture and an introductory experimental lesson in the workings of electrical engineering for biosensor development. The student will develop an understanding of these projects and general lab skills as well as gain an opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary laboratory which would be beneficial for their future in either academics or the industrial domain. <Title>CBEE students present at at BES annual meeting</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The 21st Annual Meeting of the <a href="https://baltimoreecosystemstudy.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) Long-Term Ecological Research Program</a> took place on Wednesday and Thursday, 23-24 October in Baltimore, MD at the University of Baltimore. The Research Conference shared updates and results of project investigations with all BES collaborators, interested researchers, educators, local, state and federal agency representatives, media, and community members. </p><p>Two of Dr. Claire Welty's students  presented at the conference: </p>
    <ul><li><strong>Joey Mowery</strong> (Chemical Engineering  '21, Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Track) presented his first poster at the BES Annual Meeting. SCUDEM IV 2019 is open to high school and undergraduate students. 
    
    SCUDEM IV 2019 is sponsored by SIMIODE Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations and Opportunities with Differential Equations, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, devoted to supporting the use of modeling to motivate and teach differential equations. SIMIODE is funded by the United States’ National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education.
    </span></div><div>This event took place just this past week, involving a week-long "hackathon." It culminated with teams of three students submitting an executive summary of their work, working on a new question with the model they proposed and presenting the model and new scenario to a panel of judges at Bowie State. </div></div><div><div><br></div><div>Thank you to Dr. Frey for sharing the competition and keeping the ball running. </div><div>Thank you to Dr. Raikar for volunteering to be the coach that attended the competition with the students this past Saturday. <Title>CBEE Undergraduate Student and Alumni awarded 2019 NSF GRFP</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Three CBEE undergraduate students and alumni were selected for the 2019 NSF GRFP  Award or Honorable Mention. The <a href="https://www.nsfgrfp.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program</a> recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.</div><div><br></div><h3><strong>2019 Awards: </strong></h3><div><strong>Adrian Davey</strong> ('18) is pursuing his graduate degree at the University of California - Berkeley. </div><div><strong>Elise Adamsom</strong> ('17) is pursuing her graduate degree at Duke University. </div><div><br></div><h3><strong>2019 Honorable Mention: </strong></h3><div><div><strong>Temitope Ibitoye</strong> is completing her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering in the Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Track. </div><div><br></div></div><div><strong><a href="https://www.nsfgrfp.org/general_resources/about" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">About NSF GRFP</a>:</strong></div><div><div>The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. </div><div><br></div><div>As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the GRFP has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. The reputation of the GRFP follows recipients and often helps them become life-long leaders that contribute significantly to both scientific innovation and teaching. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, Google founder, Sergey Brin and Freakonomics co-author, Steven Levitt.</div><div><br></div><div>Fellows share in the prestige and opportunities that become available when they are selected. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees (paid to the institution), opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose.</div><div><br></div><div>NSF Fellows are anticipated to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. These individuals are crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation's technological infrastructure and national security as well as contributing to the economic well-being of society at large.</div><div><br></div><div>So that the nation can build fully upon the strength and creativity of a diverse society, the Foundation welcomes applications from all qualified individuals.
