CBEE Students Among Award Winners at GEARS and 3MT
Azmat Naseem, Environmental Engineering PhD student with Dr. Ghosh, was awarded the best poster presentation for COEIT and Sahar Souizi, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Ph.D. student with Dr. Blaney, won the runner-up award for the 3 Minute Thesis competition (3MT). Congratulations!
GEARS GSA proudly hosted the 2025 Research Symposium and Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, celebrating the innovation, passion, and dedication of our student researchers across disciplines.

CBEE represented at 3MT semi-final for 3 consecutive years
Jayashree Yalamanchili, 2021 GEARS 3MT winner
Jayashree Yalamanchili, PhD candidate, participated in the semi-final 3MT competition during the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools in Raleigh, NC. Her talk was titled "The fate of transition metals in phosphate-based acellular assays used to determine Particulate Matter (PM) reactivity". Jayashree is advised by Dr. Christopher Hennigan and Dr. Brian Reed.
Jayashree won the
GEARS 3MT conducted at UMBC in May 2021. She is the
third doctoral student in the department to win the GEARS 3MT and the fourth GEARS 3MT winner to be advised by a faculty member in CBEE.
3MT celebrates the exciting research conducted by Ph.D. students. Developed by The University of Queensland, the exercise cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
We are exceedingly proud of Jayashree's success and that of CBEE students in past 3MT competitions!
Jahir continues the excellent track record of CBEE PhD student participation and success in the UMBC and regional
3MT competition.
Jahir competed in the Regional 3MT competition in February 2021 at the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools. His presentation was titled 'Environmental Forensic Tools to Detect Leaking Sewers'. In order to advance to the Regional 3MT competion, Jahir completed and won UMBC's 3MT virtual competion.
3MT celebrates the exciting research conducted by Ph.D. students. Developed by The University of Queensland, the exercise cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
Please join me in congratulating Utsav Shashvatt, PhD Candidate in Environmental Engineering, who did UMBC proud as a Finalist at the Council of Southern Graduate Schools Regional 3MT competition in beautiful Birmingham, Alabama. Although he will not be advancing to nationals, his 'Urine-Credible presentation regarding his dissertation work on the role of struvite in the environmental management of urine earned him a Top 8 finish out of over 50 participants. He received numerous praise from the judges and audience members.
In addition, he received a $150 cash prize to celebrate his amazing achievement.
