Yonghyun (John) Kim (PhD '08) has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama.  

While at UMBC, Dr. Kim worked in Mark Marten's lab focusing on development of a better understanding of autophagy using proteomic analysis in filamentous fungi. After graduation, Dr. Kim did a postdoc in Korea before joining the faculty in the Chemical Engineering Department at the U of Alabama. His current research is in the area of translational medicine, specifically bioprocessing expansion of cancer stem cells. Dr. Kim's research is accelerating, and he has mentored a number of students at BS, MS and PHD levels.

Trevor Needham and Mandar Bokare; PhD students in Dr. Upal Ghosh’s research group at Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); received the 1st and 2nd best student presentation awards respectively at the 2018 Annual Spring Meeting of Chesapeake Potomac Regional Chapter (CPRC) of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) held on 23rd April 2018 in Fredericksburg, VA.

Trevor was awarded the best student presentation award for his work on "Microbial Interaction with Carbonaceous Material and the Implications for Environmental Remediation" and Mandar was awarded 2nd place for his work on “Quantification of water-air transfer of PCBs and pesticides in the Anacostia River using passive sampling. A UMBC faculty member and a UMBC alumnus were recognized by the Maryland Science Center for their outstanding work in engineering and science. Lee Blaney, associate professor of chemical, biochemical and environmental engineering, was one of two people to receive the 2017 Outstanding Young Engineer Award, and Phillip Graff ’08, physics, was awarded one of two 2017 Outstanding Young Scientist Awards. The ceremony, hosted annually by the Maryland Science Center and the Maryland Academy of Sciences, highlights the work being done by young scientists and engineers in Maryland to advance the fields.

In his work, Blaney develops technology used to recover nutrients, such as phosphorus, from poultry litter. The phosphorus found in poultry litter often saturates the soil on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, making the water that runs off into the Chesapeake Bay a hazard for aquatic life. The technology he is testing in his lab could reduce the amount of phosphorus that ends up in the Chesapeake Bay from manure by about 90 percent.

First student in UMBC history to receive this scholarship The Rhodes Trust, which awards scholarships for two years of postgraduate study at Oxford University in England, named UMBC student Naomi Mburu of Ellicott City. Mburu, 21, a senior studying chemical engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, is the first student in the school’s history to receive a Rhodes scholarship

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski said the recognition “speaks volumes about both Naomi as a fine thinker and future leader and about the education she’s received here.

Hrabowski said he got goosebumps and tears in his eyes when he learned Mburu had been selected. He was one of the school officials who recruited her to UMBC, with the promise that she would be able to attend any graduate school of her choosing afterward.

“I knew if she came here she would have great opportunities to do research and grow as a person,” he said. “We’re very honored that people saw the strength of her thinking and capacity to be a major leader in our society.”

Congratulations to Marwa who is a 4th year PhD candidate working under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Hennigan in the air pollution lab at the department.

Marwa presented this poster at the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) 36th annual meeting held in Raleigh, NC October 16-20 2017 where her poster was recognized for excellence. 

The title of the presentation was: Characterizing the behavior of ambient organic aerosols under conditions of aerosol liquid water evaporation.

At the Alumni Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 5, 2017 Dr. Kafui Dzirasa ’01, M8, chemical engineering was awarded the Alumnus of the Year in Engineering and Information Technology.  As an associate professor of psychiatry, behavioral science, neurobiology, and neurosurgery at the Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Dzirasa has dedicated his career to creating a kind of “pacemaker for the brain,” a device that can effectively rewire neurological signals in patients with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other illnesses.
