<Title>CBEE Faculty and Students Celebrate Graduation</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Students and faculty from CBEE celebrated the end of the year and graduation at the first annual College of Engineering and Technology Celebration. <Title>Dr.  Yonghyun (John) Kim (CBEE PhD Alum) to Receive Tenure!</Title>

<![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content"><div><span><a href="http://ykim.eng.ua.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Yonghyun (John) Kim</a> (PhD '08) has been promoted to <span>Associate Professor with tenure </span>in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama.  <br></span></div><div><br></div><div>While at UMBC, Dr. Kim worked in Mark Marten's lab focusing on development of a better understanding of autophagy using proteomic analysis in filamentous fungi. After graduation, Dr. Kim did a postdoc in Korea before joining the faculty in the Chemical Engineering Department at the U of Alabama. His current research is in the area of translational medicine, specifically bioprocessing expansion of cancer stem cells. Dr. Kim's research is accelerating, and he has mentored a number of students at BS, MS and PHD levels. </div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p>Trevor Needham and Mandar Bokare; PhD students in Dr. Upal Ghosh’s research group at Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); received the 1<sup>st</sup> and 2<sup>nd</sup> best student presentation awards respectively at the 2018 Annual Spring Meeting of Chesapeake Potomac Regional Chapter (CPRC) of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) held on 23<sup>rd</sup> April 2018 in Fredericksburg, VA.</p></span><p>Trevor was awarded the best student presentation award for his work on "Microbial Interaction with Carbonaceous Material and the Implications for Environmental Remediation" and Mandar was awarded 2<sup>nd</sup> place for his work on “Quantification of water-air transfer of PCBs and pesticides in the Anacostia River using passive sampling. <Title>Lee Blaney Honored by Maryland Science Center!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>A UMBC faculty member and a UMBC alumnus were recognized by the Maryland Science Center for their outstanding work in engineering and science. </span><span>Lee Blaney</span><span>, associate professor of chemical, biochemical and environmental engineering, was one of two people to receive the 2017 Outstanding Young Engineer Award, and </span><span>Phillip Graff</span><span> ’08, physics, was awarded one of two 2017 Outstanding Young Scientist Awards. The ceremony, hosted annually by the Maryland Science Center and the Maryland Academy of Sciences, highlights the work being done by young scientists and engineers in Maryland to advance the fields.</span></p><p><span>In his work, Blaney develops technology used to recover nutrients, such as phosphorus, from poultry litter. The phosphorus found in poultry litter often saturates the soil on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, making the water that runs off into the Chesapeake Bay a hazard for aquatic life. The technology he is testing in his lab could reduce the amount of phosphorus that ends up in the Chesapeake Bay from manure by about 90 percent.<br></span></p><p>-- UMBC News</p><div><span><br></span></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The Rhodes Trust, which awards scholarships for two years of postgraduate study at Oxford University in England, named UMBC </span><span>student Naomi Mburu of Ellicott City. </span><span>Mburu, 21, a senior studying chemical engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, is the first student in the school’s history to receive a Rhodes scholarship</span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski</span><span> said the recognition “speaks volumes about both Naomi as a fine thinker and future leader and about the education she’s received here.</span></div><div><p>Hrabowski said he got goosebumps and tears in his eyes when he learned Mburu had been selected.
