    <div class="html-content"><div>CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Mariajose Castellanos (aka "Dr. C") - winner of the 2018 UMBC Alumni Association Outstanding Faculty Award! </div><blockquote><div>"This award is given to one full-time faculty member to honor extraordinary teaching as demonstrated by the effectiveness in motivating students in ways that have a lasting influence on their lives. The nominee should have a record of commitment to student success, the ability to provoke student interest and enthusiasm, service to the UMBC community, and have constructively impacted and influenced campus life beyond the classroom."</div></blockquote><br><div>Dr. Castellanos is a Senior Lecturer and the Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical &amp; Environmental Engineering (CBEE).  She was nominated for this award by Mr. Jeremy Drew (CBEE Alum, BS 2017), who gathered narratives from over 30 CBEE alumni demonstrating Dr. C's  effectiveness in motivating students in ways that have a lasting influence on their lives, and a number of faculty describing Dr. C's service to the UMBC community. </div><div><br></div><div>The 2018 Alumni Awards Ceremony will take <strong>Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.</strong> (with a reception immediately following) in the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall, Performing Arts &amp; Humanities Building, UMBC. Candidates with research interests in all areas relevant to the field of chemical and environmental engineering will be considered.  We are especially interested in candidates who conduct interdisciplinary work and who will complement expertise in our department and college. Those who work on computational-related topics, mathematical modeling, and bioinformatics are of particular interest.   Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong potential to build an externally supported research program, an ability to address novel challenges in these fields, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student body. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in chemical, biomedical, environmental engineering, or a related discipline, and it is critical they are able to teach core courses in the chemical engineering curriculum. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2019. Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. </div><div><br></div><div>The Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) is a vital component of the College of Engineering and Information Technology. The department has approximately 300 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, 13 tenure-track faculty, and three full-time lecturers.  Current departmental research focuses on biochemical, biomedical, bioprocess, environmental, and water resources engineering. CBEE faculty members actively collaborate with researchers from nearby institutions including the University of Maryland School of Medicine and numerous nearby federal agencies. Faculty also participate in interdisciplinary research centers at UMBC, including the Center for Advanced Sensor Technologies (CAST) and the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE).  In addition to departmental space and facilities, a new Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2019 and will provide 123,000 SF of flexible and adaptable research and education spaces to support ongoing and future interdisciplinary efforts. </div><div><br></div><div>At the undergraduate level, the department provides tracks in three areas: traditional Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology/Bioengineering, and Environmental Engineering &amp; Sustainability. All three tracks lead to the B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and in Environmental Engineering. The CBEE faculty maintains diverse, active, and successful research programs amounting to over $5 million in external research support in FY2018. UMBC is a public research university with approximately 14,000 students. The campus is located on 500 acres in the Baltimore-Washington corridor within an hour’s drive to many federal facilities including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. geological Survey, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Defense, The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, a 71-acre community housing over 110 companies engaged in research, entrepreneurship, and economic development, sits adjacent to the UMBC campus. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is five minutes away, as are AMTRAK and light rail stations. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship by the Lupus Foundation of America on Tuesday, September 11! She received this fellowship for her research in antimalarial drugs in the treatment of lupus, and was one of only six recipients. <Title>Dr.  Yonghyun (John) Kim (CBEE PhD Alum) to Receive Tenure!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span><a href="http://ykim.eng.ua.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Yonghyun (John) Kim</a> (PhD '08) has been promoted to <span>Associate Professor with tenure </span>in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama.  <br></span></div><div><br></div><div>While at UMBC, Dr. Kim worked in Mark Marten's lab focusing on development of a better understanding of autophagy using proteomic analysis in filamentous fungi. After graduation, Dr. Kim did a postdoc in Korea before joining the faculty in the Chemical Engineering Department at the U of Alabama. His current research is in the area of translational medicine, specifically bioprocessing expansion of cancer stem cells. Dr. Kim's research is accelerating, and he has mentored a number of students at BS, MS and PHD levels. </div></div>
