    <div class="html-content">Dr. Dipanjan Pan and colleagues are featured on the cover of Advanced Functional Materials for January 23, 2020.<div><br></div><div><strong>Abstract: </strong></div><div> </div><div>Bone as a functional material could experience various stresses that could lead to microdamages. In article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.201904936" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">1904936</a>, Dipanjan Pan and co‐workers show that targeted hafnia nanoparticles and photon counting spectral computed tomography can detect microdamages. <Title>Join translational nanomedicine research group at UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Seeking self-motivated hard-working undergraduates to work at a translational nanomedicine research group at UMBC.</div><div><br></div><div>The Pan group is a diverse, multidisciplinary research team (The Laboratory of Materials in Medicine) with over hundreds of high impact factor highly cited publications in JACS, PNAS, ACS Nano, Advanced Functional Materials etc. and brings long-standing experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. Our group just moved from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign to the University of Maryland Baltimore County and University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine. With a clear focus on translating research ideas from bench to bedside, Pan group uniquely merges ‘molecule making’ with ‘device making’ for areas molecular imaging, drug delivery and biosensing.</div><div><br></div><div>The group is looking for motivated undergrads majoring in either Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Biology or Biochemistry to work with us at the ILSB from the Spring Semester. His/her projects would involve synthetic chemistry, analytical techniques for characterization, developing skills in animal cell culture and an introductory experimental lesson in the workings of electrical engineering for biosensor development. The student will develop an understanding of these projects and general lab skills as well as gain an opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary laboratory which would be beneficial for their future in either academics or the industrial domain.     <div class="html-content"><div><div><strong>Excerpt from "Preparing for impact: Four new UMBC grads share what drives their research"</strong></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>DECEMBER 17, 2019 |  SARAH HANSEN</strong></div></div><div><br></div><div>It’s 3 a.m., and <strong>Cindy Chelius</strong> rolls out of the pull-out couch in the grad student lounge. Time to check on her fungi. For this experiment, measurements must be taken every four hours for forty hours. Thankfully, the undergraduates she mentors took the day shift. Tonight, as the lead on the project, it’s her turn.</div><div><br></div><div>“I think it just makes you feel like you really earned it when those results come back,” Chelius says. She <em>has </em>earned it—on December 18, she’ll walk across the stage to receive her Ph.D. in chemical and biochemical engineering from UMBC. The signaling pathways of fungi might seem like niche research, but fungal species are commonly used in industry as tiny, living factories. They can produce substances found in an array of products, including medications.</div><div><br></div><div><div>After graduation, Chelius will take her skills to Bristol-Myers Squibb’s upstream processing development team in Devens, Massachusetts. She’ll help the company improve the ways they use organisms to produce therapeutic compounds. </div><div><br></div><div>Chelius’s UMBC experience has prepared her well for a research career in ways that go beyond a successful dissertation. Encouraged by her Ph.D. advisor, <strong>Mark Marten</strong>, professor and chair of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, Chelius learned how to use bioreactors. “These industry positions really like someone coming in with that working knowledge,” she explains.</div><div><br></div><div><div>Chelius also took advantage of the Biochemical Regulatory Certification program at UMBC, organized by <strong>Tony Moreira</strong>, vice provost for academic affairs. It’s a four-course series including training in FDA regulations and good manufacturing practices, local lab tours, and more. “I think it really helped with my job interviews, because I was able to understand the acronyms they were talking about and reference the literature on these topics,” Chelius says.</div><div><br></div><div>She’s also expanded her cultural awareness by being active in a dynamic, diverse department with students and faculty from across the U.S. and the world.     <div class="html-content"><p><strong>ALEXANDRIA, VA </strong>(November 2019) – Alexis McKittrick, Ph.D., a research staff member in the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) has been named a recipient of the 2019 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Emerging Leader Award in recognition of her STEM achievements and community contributions. </p><p>According to SWE Conference 2019 issue of SWE Magazine, McKittrick is recognized “for demonstrating technical expertise and insight in shaping science policy; for consistent leadership and technical excellence across varied research environments and scientific topics; and for leadership in cultivating an inclusive environment.” </p><p>“I extend my congratulations to Alexis on her outstanding achievement, commitment, and leadership in the engineering community,” said Acting STPI Director Mark Taylor, Ph.D. “I look forward to her ongoing contributions here at STPI and impact in the community she serves.” </p><p>McKittrick was recognized at WE19, the world’s largest conference and career fair for women engineers, November 7-9, 2019 in Anaheim, California. The conference gathered more than 16,000 professional and collegiate men and women in engineering and technology for professional development, education, and networking. She accepted the award at the WE Awards banquet on November 8, 2019. </p><p>“The men and women recognized have lived and learned through significant contributions to the engineering community, and they continue to lead in their careers and personal lives,” said Cindy Hoover, president of SWE. “They are leaders paving the way to empower and inspire future women engineers across the globe.” </p><p>McKittrick (Hillock) earned her bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2001 and her doctor of philosophy degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2005. She currently serves as the Speaker of the Senate on the SWE Board of Directors. </p><p><strong>About the Institute for Defense Analyses</strong> </p><p>IDA is a nonprofit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers in the public interest. <Title>CBEE students present at at BES annual meeting</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The 21st Annual Meeting of the <a href="https://baltimoreecosystemstudy.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) Long-Term Ecological Research Program</a> took place on Wednesday and Thursday, 23-24 October in Baltimore, MD at the University of Baltimore. The Research Conference shared updates and results of project investigations with all BES collaborators, interested researchers, educators, local, state and federal agency representatives, media, and community members. </p><p>Two of Dr. Claire Welty's students  presented at the conference: </p>
    <ul><li><strong>Joey Mowery</strong> (Chemical Engineering  '21, Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Track) presented his first poster at the BES Annual Meeting. SCUDEM IV 2019 is open to high school and undergraduate students. 
    
    SCUDEM IV 2019 is sponsored by SIMIODE Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations and Opportunities with Differential Equations, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, devoted to supporting the use of modeling to motivate and teach differential equations. SIMIODE is funded by the United States’ National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education.
    </span></div><div>This event took place just this past week, involving a week-long "hackathon." It culminated with teams of three students submitting an executive summary of their work, working on a new question with the model they proposed and presenting the model and new scenario to a panel of judges at Bowie State. </div></div><div><div><br></div><div>Thank you to Dr. Frey for sharing the competition and keeping the ball running. </div><div>Thank you to Dr. Raikar for volunteering to be the coach that attended the competition with the students this past Saturday.     <p><strong>PhD Chemical Engineering (2011)</strong></p>
    <p>In addition to my PhD, I have 2 professional certificates from UMBC in Biochemical Regulatory Engineering and Biotechnology Management. I joined Decision resources group - a healthcare research and consulting company providing high-value healthcare industry analysis and insights, in Nov 2011 after my PhD, and stayed in the company until Jan 2017. Started as an Analyst of Latin American Markets, and upon leaving I was Director of Global Intelligence at the Market Access team. I have extensive experience in global market access, HTA, payer systems, and P&amp;R strategy across several therapeutic areas.</p><p>As a Director at Lifescience Dynamics, I am predominantly involved in client relationship and account directions with project management and talent engagement management, and I am also part of a senior team committed to developing high impact and executable global strategies.</p><p>Originally from Portugal, I have lived and worked in Baltimore, Boston and London. After almost 14 years abroad, I have finally returned to my home city, Porto in August 2019.</p>
