'20, environmental engineering </strong>on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 as part of the <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/events-calendar/event/94772/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Alumni Speaker Series</strong></a><div><br></div><div>The <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/192MaC96xvH-8mmnjam4jzLazKxUC5Qs8/view?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">recording </a>is available to those with UMBC credentials. <br><div><br></div></div><div><div><div><h3>Speakers</h3><div><div><span>Trevor Needham, </span><span>Ph.D.</span><span>'19,  environmental engineering.</span></div><div>Trevor Needham is a Hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in the Maryland Water Science Center. His work and research focus on the fate, transport, and remediation of legacy organic contaminants in the complex environmental systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (2019), a M.S. of Environmental Engineering from the University of Missouri Science and Technology (2011), and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Scranton. Additionally, he serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve assigned as an Adjunct Faculty for the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.  He is married to his wife Becky for 14 years and has four children: John Paul (13), Clare (10), Joshua (9), and Kolbe (3).</div><div><br><div><span>Haley Hartney </span><span>'19 chemical engineering, M.S. '20, environmental engineering </span></div></div></div></div></div><div>Haley Hartney is a Project Manager for the Environmental Compliance department at NAVFAC in DC.  She manages the environmental projects for Marine Corp Base Quantico in all of the major media types including wastewater, storm water, air, hazardous waste, and storage tanks. Haley </div><div>graduated from UMBC in December 2019 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and in May 2020, with an MS in Environmental Engineering. </div><div><br></div></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p>A <strong>PhD student</strong> is sought for <strong>Fall 2022</strong> to carry out a PhD project under <strong><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/christopher-hennigan" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Chris Hennigan's</a> </strong>guidance on Air Pollution, Atmospheric Chemistry, and Aerosol Science. </p><p>Applicants should have a Masters or Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Their prior coursework must include the completion of <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/academics/graduate-degree-programs/ph-d-environmental-engineering/#prereq" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">key prerequisites</a> courses with a B or better. The prospective students must be admitted to the Environmental Engineering Doctoral program at University of Maryland Baltimore County in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering. <strong><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/academics/graduate-degree-programs/ph-d-environmental-engineering/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Environmental Engineering PhD Program Overview</a></strong></p><p><strong>Benefits: </strong></p><p>Full-time PhD students admitted to the department are paid a stipend plus tuition remission and health insurance.     <div class="html-content"><strong>Utsav Shashvatt</strong>, ENEN PhD Candidate in Dr. Lee Blaney's lab, was selected the recipient of the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry Graduate Student Award. <div><br><div><div>The <a href="https://acsenvr.com/website/awards-recognition/graduate-student-awards/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">award</a><a href="https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/students/graduate/bridge-project/students/bridge-travel-award.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> </a>recognizes graduate students who are working in areas related to environmental chemistry.  The award is based on student transcripts and record of research productivity, a brief discussion of their future goals, and a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor.  The awardees receive cash and membership in the Environmental Division for one year.  The awardees are publicized in EnvirofACS and Environmental Science and Technology.  Up to 20 awards are given each year.</div><div><div><div><div><div><br></div><div>Congratulations Utsav! </div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><em>Image Credit: Tim Zänkert @znkrt via <a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/gm3M-CsuynI" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Unsplash</a></em></div><div><br></div></div>

    <div class="html-content">Michael Fleming, ENEN PhD Student in Dr. Lee Blaney's lab, was selected as an ACS Bridge Career &amp; Professional Development Awards Winner for this fall 2021. This financial award is to help defray the cost of registration of the ACS Spring 2021 Virtual Expo and Meeting, the 2021 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) 47th Annual Virtual Conference, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Guided Online Course. <div><br></div><div><div>The <a href="https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/students/graduate/bridge-project/students/bridge-travel-award.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">award </a>is open to students who are pursuing a graduate degree in the chemical sciences and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Namely, underrepresented minorities include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans. The goal of this award is to advance the career and professional development of graduate students. The professional development award will defray the cost of any online workshops, courses, virtual conferences, and/or events that will assist URM graduate students in the chemical sciences with their career and professional development goals.     <div class="html-content">Jahir Antonio Batista Andrade, ENEN PhD Student, received a Certificate of Merit for his presentation at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall 2020 Virtual Meeting &amp; Expo. The title of the poster was "Analysis of dissolved organic matter and contaminants of emerging concern to detect leaking sewers in urban streams". The coauthors for the poster are Erick Diaz, Ethan Hain, Ke He and Lee Blaney. Dr. Lee Blaney is Jahir's advisor. <div><div><br></div><div>The Certificate of Merit program recognizes Division members who are making their first ENVR presentation at an ACS national meeting. Jahir's presentation was attended by Division volunteers and judged to be of high quality in both intellectual merit and presentation style.     <div class="html-content">UMBC is seeking applicants for urban environmental work:  <div><br></div><div><h3><strong>PhD Student Research Assistantship, Environmental Engineering</strong></h3><div>A PhD student matriculating to the <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/academics/graduate-degree-programs/m-s-environmental-engineering/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dept. of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering</a> in<strong> Fall 2021</strong> is sought to carry out mathematical modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport at a suite of field sites, as part of a new <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/bedrock-to-treetops-nsf-awards-4-8m-to-urban-environment-study-led-by-umbcs-claire-welty/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Critical Zone Network project</a>  Applicants should have an interest in urban hydrology and a background (MS degree) in numerical modeling and quantitative analysis.  For further information contact Dr. Claire Welty at <a href="mailto:weltyc@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">weltyc@umbc.edu</a>. <a href="https://gradschool.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Graduate School</a> are due <strong>January 1, 2021</strong>. </div></div></div>
