Major: Computer Science

Current Class Level: Junior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
    Name): Cisco Systems Inc

Location of the Organization (City, State): RTP, NC

Title of position: Software Engineering Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

During my Cisco internship, my days usually began with a
check-in meeting with my mentor to review progress and set priorities. I would
then dive into reading documentation, exploring new concepts, and planning out
the steps for my project work that day. Some days involved deep problem-solving
on my own, while others were filled with collaboration and brainstorming with
teammates to find the best approach. This rhythm taught me how to break down
complex goals into actionable steps, adapt to new challenges, and stay
organized in a fast-paced environment. By the end of each day, I could see how
small, consistent progress built toward creating something impactful.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I first learned about the Cisco internship position online
and began reaching out to multiple recruiters to express my interest. After
making those connections, I was able to secure an opportunity to move forward
in the process. The first step was completing an online assessment, which
tested my problem-solving and technical skills. This was followed by a
behavioral phone interview where I discussed my experiences, teamwork, and
communication style. Finally, I completed a technical interview that focused on
evaluating my coding abilities and approach to problem-solving.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

Alumni Networking, LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

What I've enjoyed most about my position at Cisco is the
company's welcoming and intentional culture, where collaboration and support
are a priority. I've appreciated having access to advanced AI tools that make
development more efficient and creative. The hybrid work environment has also
been a highlight—spending four days in the office each week provides the
perfect balance of in-person collaboration and focused work time.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I believe I've made an impact by taking ownership of tasks
that directly moved my team's projects forward. For example, I worked on
resolving blockers in our backend–frontend integration so features could be
tested and deployed without delays. I also shared solutions and resources with
my teammates, which helped streamline our workflow. By consistently making
progress on my deliverables and contributing ideas during discussions, I was
able to help the team work more smoothly and keep our projects on track.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice is simple—don't give up on applying. In my case,
my internship offer came later than expected, so persistence was key. Surround
yourself with peers who are also going through the application process to keep
each other accountable and motivated. Keep refining your resume, attending
career fairs, and seeking feedback. All these small, consistent efforts add up
and eventually open the door to the opportunity you've been working toward.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

What I liked most about my position was Cisco's welcoming
culture and the opportunity to work in a collaborative, hybrid environment. The
Career Center's guidance and resources helped me prepare and confidently
navigate the application and interview process.

Location of the Organization (City, State): Maryland

Title of position: Digital Marketing Co-Ordinator

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

During my internship at Amplify MedTech, I managed digital
marketing and community engagement by developing LinkedIn campaigns, creating
visual assets, and coordinating newsletters, using audience metrics to refine
outreach strategy. I also supported the planning and execution of high-impact
events, including NIH SBIR workshops and expert panels, gaining significant
hands-on experience in stakeholder engagement and MedTech innovation within a
    fast-paced startup environment.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I first met Dr. Fehmida Kapadia during a UMBC Career Center
event, where we had a brief but meaningful conversation about Amplify MedTech's
mission and its work with early-stage healthcare startups. A few weeks later,
during the summer, Dr. Fehmida reached out to me directly about an internship
opportunity with Amplify MedTech. After expressing my interest, we scheduled a
follow-up conversation to discuss the role and how my background could align
with the organization's needs. The UMBC Career Center was incredibly supportive
throughout the process, making everything—from communication to
onboarding—smooth and straightforward. Shortly after our conversation, I was
offered the position and began working as a summer intern, contributing to
digital marketing, event coordination, and strategic outreach efforts.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC
Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), LinkedIn or other social
    media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

What I've enjoyed most about my position at Amplify MedTech
is the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work while learning in a
collaborative, mission-driven environment. I loved being trusted with real
responsibilities—from designing outreach campaigns to supporting educational
events for MedTech founders—and seeing how my efforts made a visible impact.
Working under Dr. Fehmida Kapadia's mentorship was especially rewarding; her
guidance, along with the supportive culture of the organization, helped me grow
both professionally and personally. The experience gave me a clearer sense of
how innovation, strategy, and community engagement come together in the MedTech
    space.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I believe I made an impact at Amplify MedTech by helping the
organization effectively communicate its mission and engage a broader audience
of MedTech innovators. Through designing LinkedIn campaigns, creating clear and
compelling event graphics, and coordinating email newsletters, I helped
increase visibility for events and resources that support early-stage startups.
My contributions played a role in streamlining outreach efforts, improving
audience engagement, and enhancing the overall professionalism of Amplify
MedTech's digital presence. By taking initiative and paying close attention to
detail, I was able to support the team's goals and help amplify the impact of
    their work.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice to another student seeking an internship is to be
proactive, stay curious, and take full advantage of the resources
available—especially the UMBC Career Center. They were incredibly helpful in
refining my résumé and preparing me for the application and interview process.
I also recommend attending career fairs and networking events, even if you're
unsure of what you're looking for. Sometimes, a brief conversation or
connection can lead to an unexpected and rewarding opportunity. Be open to learning,
ask thoughtful questions, and don't shy away from roles that challenge you—some
of the most valuable growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

I loved being part of a mission-driven organization where my
work made a real impact. The Career Center played a big role in helping me get
there—guiding me through the application process and making sure my résumé
    stood out.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

I interned at Morgan Stanley in the Baltimore office as an
Operations Analyst Intern. During this internship, I worked alongside the
Global Reconciliation Services team and was a team lead for a group project
involving automating manual processes using various automation tools like
Alteryx and Power BI. I also worked on documenting business requirements and
reengineering business processes through automation and process-mapping.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about this internship around the end of summer of
2024 and obtained this internship by first, making an appointment with the
career center to help review and tailor my resume to the internship's job
description. I also networked with full-time employees at Morgan Stanley that
were previous interns and asked them how I can stand out in my application and
my interview. After preparing my application, I submitted my application within
    2 weeks.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

UMBC Career Center, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info
Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), Alumni Networking, Student
Organizations/Scholar Groups, LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

What I enjoyed most about interning at Morgan Stanley was
learning alongside experienced professionals that I looked up to and receiving
guidance from them on familiarizing myself with a corporate environment.
Getting to know other interns from different schools and backgrounds was also a
great opportunity that I appreciated the most because those connections I built
are always going to be helpful for my future as I grow professionally.
Additionally, getting to use skills that I learned in the classroom in a
real-world environment where I'm given a project and I have the opportunity to
create impact for the organization was very rewarding!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

The automation project that I led was for a daily manual
process that usually took 1008 hours to complete annually. By automating the
daily manual process, I saved the company 750+ hours annually and eliminated
manual error completely. The company can now spend more time on more crucial
    tasks at hand.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

Advice I would give to another student seeking an internship
would be to reach out alumni that works at the company and has the role that
you're interested in and have them look at your resume and overall application.
I would also suggest to network with students who just recently interned in
your company of interest because their insights would be fresh in terms of what
skills the company looks for, interview tips, etc.

<Tagline>Check out Lahari's Internship!</Tagline>

Name: Lahari Vuppalapati

Pronouns: She/Her

Semester of Internship: Summer 2025

Major: Computer Science

Current Class Level: Masters Student

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
    Name): Kaya Global Inc.

Location of the Organization (City, State): New York,
    NY

Title of position: Technology Summer Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

During my internship at Kaya, I was actively involved in
both functional and technical tasks that contributed to real-time AI customer
simulation and product workflows. My day-to-day responsibilities included
analyzing dialogue flows, testing the AI assistant’s behavior across various
automotive scenarios, and ensuring smooth handoffs between AI and human agents.
I worked closely with mentors and team members to validate conversation
designs, identify bugs, and offer improvement suggestions. I regularly documented
findings, clarified task scopes with my mentor, and contributed to building
testing processes for new use cases. Over time, I also expressed interest in
participating in more technical development efforts, aiming to deepen my
understanding of the product and support the engineering team where possible.
This internship gave me a hands-on view of how AI solutions are built and
    validated in a professional environment.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I obtained this internship position through an internal
application process facilitated by the Talent Acquisition team at Kaya. I first
learned about the opportunity early in the semester when the team reached out
directly. After expressing interest, I proceeded through the interview process,
which also included discussions about my background, technical interests, and
cultural fit with the team. The interviews were completed by April 2025, and I
received an official offer during the second week of May 2025.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

UMBC Career Center, Handshake, LinkedIn or other social
    media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

The organization fosters a collaborative and supportive
environment where asking questions and learning from others is encouraged,
which has greatly helped me grow both professionally and personally

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

By proactively communicating challenges and helping
streamline the workflow when collaboration issues arose, I helped maintain
momentum and ensure deadlines were met.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would emphasize the importance of starting early and being
intentional throughout the process. Begin by identifying your interests and
aligning them with potential roles. Tailor your resume / cover letter for each
application, highlighting relevant coursework, projects, or personal
initiatives. Once you apply, keep track of deadlines, follow up when needed,
and prepare well for interviews. Practice articulating your experiences clearly
and confidently. After landing the internship, be proactive in your contributions.
Take initiative, ask thoughtful questions, and build connections with team
members. Approach even the smallest tasks with dedication, as each one
contributes to your learning. Show consistent growth, ask for feedback, and
express interest in more responsibility when appropriate.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

What I liked most about my position was the constant
feedback and update sessions with my HR, and the active engagement and support
whenever we wanted to build or explore something new. The Career Center’s resume review helped me present my
experiences more professionally, which gave me the confidence to pursue and
    secure this opportunity.

Location of the Organization (City, State): Washington, DC

Title of position: Communication Manager

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
As an intern with the World Service Authority, I contribute to the organization’s mission of promoting global human rights and world citizenship. My role primarily involves research, writing, and advocacy efforts that support refugees, stateless individuals, and those seeking international legal protections. On a day-to-day basis, I draft articles and updates for the organization’s newsletter, focusing on topics such as refugee assistance and legal identity documentation. I also assist with outreach efforts, communicating with individuals and organizations to raise awareness about human rights issues. Additionally, I conduct legal and policy research to help support the organization’s initiatives and advocacy strategies.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
Intrigued by the organization’s mission, I researched its work and decided that the role aligned with my academic background and career interests. I submitted my application in late fall, which included my resume and a statement of interest detailing my passion for global justice and media advocacy. Shortly after, I was invited to interview with a representative from the organization. The interview focused on my writing and research skills, as well as my understanding of human rights issues. After discussing how my experience in political science, media, and communications could contribute to the organization, I was offered the position. I eagerly accepted, excited for the opportunity to engage in meaningful work at the intersection of policy, media, and advocacy.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
LinkedIn or other social media.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I’ve enjoyed most about my position at the World Service Authority is the opportunity to engage in meaningful human rights advocacy while applying my skills in writing, research, and media. Working on the organization’s newsletter has been particularly rewarding, as it allows me to inform and inspire others about critical issues like refugee assistance and statelessness. I appreciate the organization's global perspective and commitment to helping individuals who often fall through the cracks of traditional legal systems. Additionally, I’ve enjoyed the flexibility and independence of the role, which has allowed me to take initiative on projects and deepen my understanding of international law and advocacy.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Through my work at the World Service Authority, I believe I have made an impact by helping to amplify the voices of refugees, stateless individuals, and those seeking international legal protections. By writing and curating content for the organization’s newsletter, I have contributed to raising awareness about human rights issues and connecting people with vital resources. My research on international law and policy has supported the organization’s advocacy efforts, helping to inform strategies for assisting individuals in need. Additionally, my outreach efforts have helped strengthen relationships between the organization and other human rights groups, fostering collaboration in the fight for global justice.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My biggest piece of advice for students seeking an internship, especially in advocacy or human rights, is to be proactive and intentional in your search. Look for opportunities that align with your academic background and personal interests, and don’t be afraid to reach out to professors, advisors, or professionals in the field for guidance. When applying, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills—whether it’s research, writing, or public outreach—and emphasize your passion for the work. Networking is also key; engaging with organizations through events, social media, or informational interviews can help you stand out. Once you secure an internship, take initiative, ask questions, and seek out projects that challenge you. Lastly, treat every experience as a learning opportunity, even if it’s outside your comfort zone, because those moments often lead to the greatest personal and professional growth.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
"I've loved the opportunity to use my writing and research skills to support human rights advocacy at the World Service Authority. This internship has allowed me to engage with global justice issues in a meaningful way. The Career Center was instrumental in helping me refine my application materials and feel confident throughout the process."

Intern of the Week: Rumsha Khan

<Tagline>Check out Rumsha's internship!</Tagline>

Name: Rumsha Khan
Pronouns: she/her
Semester of Internship: Spring 2024
Major: BA in Sociology and Management of Aging Services (Double Major), Minor in Health, Wellness, and Aging
Current Class Level: Senior
This semester I completed a(n): Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name):
Baltimore County Government – Department of Aging, Ombudsman Program

Location of the Organization (City, State):
Catonsville Office (Catonsville Senior Center), Maryland
Training: Bykota Senior Center, Towson, MD

Title of Position: Ombudsman Program Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I’m currently interning with the Baltimore County Department of Aging’s Ombudsman Program. The ombudsmen are the voice for older adults in long-term care facilities—advocating for their rights, addressing their concerns, and empowering them to speak up. I’ve visited various facilities, supported the team in addressing resident concerns, and documented visits to better understand residents’ challenges. I also worked on projects like creating a printable assisted living facility resource and collecting data on resident/family councils.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
As part of the Management of Aging Services degree, an internship was required. Professor Lauren Price shared the Ombudsman Program opportunity with me. After researching the role and feeling aligned with its mission, I applied via the county website and interviewed with Lynn McCamie, who became an incredible mentor. After training, I was placed in the Catonsville office.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Faculty connections—specifically Professor Lauren Price’s recommendation—and county government resources.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
Everything! Especially building meaningful connections with residents and empowering them through conversation and advocacy. I also appreciated the diverse learning experiences—from webinars to hands-on work—that expanded my understanding of long-term care systems.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I’ve served as a consistent, compassionate presence for residents, helping them feel heard and respected. I’ve also become more aware of systemic challenges in long-term care and feel inspired to contribute to policy change in the future.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Go in with an open mind and a passion to learn. Engage deeply with the experience, ask questions, and take time to reflect on what this work teaches you about your values and goals. Learn policies—they’re the key to making meaningful change.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center:
The Career Center was a huge support throughout my journey. I met with Farhan Nadeem through Handshake, and his personalized resume/cover letter advice made a big difference. The Career Center offers valuable tools and guidance—every student should take advantage of it.

Intern of the Week: Richard Gee for Sociology!

<Tagline>Check out Richard's internship with DAP Products Inc.!</Tagline>

Name: Richard Gee

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: DAP Products Inc.

Position Title: HR Intern

Major or Program: Sociology

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Summer 2021

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I was an HR Intern throughout the Summer. I was responsible for updating every job description for the company, ensuring they were all up to date and had the appropriate information. I would meet with the Talent Acquisition Specialist, along with the different department managers, to update the job descriptions for the various departments to ensure that the positions for those departments were correct. If there was a need to make updates, I would work with the different department managers to put together updated job descriptions for their departments. Besides updating the job descriptions, I would complete other HR assignments when tasked, such as sourcing candidates for the company, posting job openings on Facebook and LinkedIn, and searching for university career fairs for possible recruitment opportunities.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the position around March when I was searching on LinkedIn. After many past failures, I met with the Career Center for guidance, which included advice on how to improve the internship search, resume critique, and knowing when to apply. I was searching for any HR internships within the Washington D.C-Maryland area. As I was searching and applying, I came across the internship with DAP Products Inc. and found it to be interesting and felt that with my previous background in consumer goods/retail, I would be a good fit. Thus, that's when I decided to apply and submit the application.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have enjoyed the great people I've met and had the opportunity to work with. Additionally, I've really enjoyed gaining the necessary technical experience so that I can further pursue my career endeavors. Last but not least, this internship validates that HR is the right career field for me and I have great potential in the field.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work, I believe I made an impact because the work that I did was tedious because of the number of job descriptions there are in the company. Even though there was an abundance of job descriptions that needed to be updated, I managed to get a majority of the work done in a matter of weeks, which allowed me to move on to the following steps within the project quicker. Additionally, my supervisor, along with everyone else in the HR department, were impressed with the quality that I put out and acknowledged their appreciation to me.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't get discouraged, stay perseverant. Whether it takes a month or a year, an opportunity will be there.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

What I've liked most about my position was getting to work with people who have been in the HR field for years and getting to learn from them. Regarding the internship credit, I like getting the validation and notability on my transcript. As far as working with the Career Center, I really appreciate the advice and guidance that they've provided me throughout my internship search.

Check out this post on our social media platforms!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
