Title of position: Software Engineering Intern

I work on a healthcare provider centric web application. We provide tools which interface with the Epic healthcare provider database. Day-to-day I work on anything from bug fixes to new features. Recently, I completed a user feedback form which completed the development life cycle and was pushed to production. I am currently wrapping up a dynamic menu system which displays tools based on user permissions. Along with writing code, I typically meet/chat with manager/coworker as needed about tasks. I also participated in a daily scrum where all team members discuss the tasks they completed for the day.

I found the position through a Google Jobs listing. I heard/submitted my application Spring 2022. I interviewed shortly thereafter. Hopkins was very transparent and my manager was extremely helpful throughout the process.

The most enjoyable part of my position/organization are the wonderful team, flexible hours, and impact of my development. My manager and coworkers are all extremely kind and always there if I need help. Along with this my hours are flexible enough where, when extended an offer to extend my internship into the school year, I was able to excitedly accept. I also feel that there is a positive impact of my work given that it is directly improving the lives of healthcare professionals.

Apply to positions as early into your academic career as possible. I interviewed during freshman year and interned the summer after. I know how stressful it is to get the ball rolling but can also personally attest to how rewarding/beneficial it was.

The experience I have gained is invaluable and I have nothing but thanks to my manager as well as Hopkins for the opportunity!

Title of position: Software Engineering/Research Intern

Under the Cohort-based Integrated Research Community for Undergraduate Innovation and Trailblazing (CIRCUIT) Program at JHU APL, I had the opportunity to learn about and develop image processing software with my team (shoutout Icram and Amaiyah!) for cameras on the Lunar Vertex Lander for the Lunar Vertex Mission, which launches in 2024. This semester, we're also working on image projection and mapping on digital terrain models.

I heard about the CIRCUIT Program around October 2022 and applied to the CIRCUIT Program at JHU APL around January 2023.

I enjoyed having the opportunity to contribute work to the Lunar Vertex Mission! Being able to work on a real-life problem/mission was super cool and an amazing opportunity to gain insight on software engineering processes. APL is also full of talented, amazing, and supportive people!

The features that my team and I worked on will be implemented into the app that we worked on as a new update. The space community doesn't have a tool with the features we're working on yet, so it's great knowing what we've built will be used by someone else!

Don't be afraid to ask for help; use all the resources that you have! Transitioning from an academic to research environment is tough. Research is difficult, so you or your mentor won't know exactly what to expect, but that's normal! You might be one of the first people to research your specific topic, so it's okay to feel unsure of your research processes.

Earning academic credit is helpful since I get to fulfill one of my major requirements!
