Career Center Graphic Design Internship

<Tagline>Current Job Opening + Q&A with our current intern</Tagline>

The Career Center is currently recruiting for our next great Graphic Design Intern for Summer 2020 through Spring 2021.

Apply in UMBCworks, position # 9315971.

We would also like to congratulate our current graphic design intern, Nancy Luu, on her upcoming graduation this May. Get to know a little about Nancy and more about her experience working as our graphic design intern for the past year with this Q&A:

Name: Nancy Luu

Internship Site: UMBC Career Center

Position Title: Graphic Design Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Graphic Design

Current Class Level: Senior

Tell us about your internship including your weekly responsibilities.

For my internship, I worked closely with my supervisor, Dustin Eby, to update the annual Career Guide in the summer, and create and update weekly marketing items, including posters, flyers, and digital screen [advertisements] for the UMBC Career Center’s events, job fairs and career conferences.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position? How did you submit your application? What was the interview like?

I attended the Arts with a Purpose networking event, hosted by the Career Center at UMBC to help art students with their portfolios and job search. I was able to meet with Dustin and learned about the available graphic design internship at the Career Center. I reached out to him afterward and applied for the position through UMBCworks. A few weeks after, I was contacted for an interview with Dustin. During the interview, we reviewed my portfolio, which allowed me to showcase the projects I had worked on. We talked about the position’s expectations and what would be my responsibilities as an intern. Within a few weeks, I got an email for the job offer, and I was super excited to accept my first design job!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or the Career Center?

Since this position was my first design job, I enjoyed learning everything about design and the work environment. The flexibility of the meetings is a bonus as a full-time student.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I love being able to use my design skills to create meaningful works to help UMBC students with their job search journeys. Like a well-written paper, a good design with a strong hierarchy helps people obtain and retrieve the information quicker and easier.

What advice would you give to another student who is applying to the graphic design intern opening?

My advice is to never be afraid to ask questions, be organized, and if you ever get stuck in your design process, sketching always helps.
