His research interests include academic literacies, additional/second language teaching and assessment, language education policy, and teacher professional development. He is Co Editor of Language Assessment Quarterly , Editor of Research Issues of TESOL Quarterly, and serves as a member of the Editorial Boards of Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, Language and Education, and the Modern Language Journal He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK). His work in developing the English as an Additional Language Assessment Framework for Schools (funded by the Bell Foundation) won the 2018 British Council ELTons international award for innovation. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>Francis M. Hult </strong>is Professor and Director of the TESOL program at UMBC. His work at the crossroads of sociolinguistics, discourse studies, and education focuses on language policy, linguistic landscapes, and multilingual education. He serves on the boards of several journals including International Multilingual Research Journal ; Language, Culture and Curriculum ; Language Policy ; and Pedagogical Linguistics . His books include Educational Linguistics in Practice (with King) and Language Policy and Language Acquisition Planning (with Siiner and Kupisch ). <Title>Call for Faculty Working Groups</Title>
<Tagline>Apply by May 31st for Fall 2021</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>The Center for Social Science Scholarship invites
    applications for Faculty Working Groups to promote intellectual exchange in the
    social sciences and across campus. These collaborative scholarly learning
    communities will meet regularly to engage in such activities as: working on
    research projects, reading key literature, exploring new methodological
    approaches, and/or engaging in matters of public interest </span><span>related to the social sciences, across campus,
    or with community partners.</span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>Up to four Faculty Working Groups will be selected by the center
    director and advisory board members. Groups should be faculty-led and must
    include at least one faculty member from a social science department at UMBC.
    Additional priority will be given to groups whose members and/or areas of
    interest are multi- or interdisciplinary. Advanced graduate students may
    participate as Faculty Working Group members but may not serve as leaders.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual
    support ($500 per semester); groups will also be able to apply for continuation
    funding. Groups may use funds for such items as: supporting regular group
    meetings; purchasing software, books, or other materials; hosting external
    speakers; creating scholarly resources; traveling to external sites for
    research or public engagement purposes; and other similar activities. A brief
    report of the group’s activities will be due at the end of the funding period.</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>Apply by May 31, 2021,</span></strong><span> for groups to begin in Fall 2021.</span></p>

<Title>REMINDER:  Survey Data Research Possibilities Workshop</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>The National Center for Health Statistics Research Data Center (NCHS/RDC) provides researcher access to restricted-use national survey data from NCHS surveys and other federal surveys. </span></p><p><span>This presentation by </span>Jing Tian, M.D., Ph.D., of the Research Data Center at the National Center for Health Statistics and Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) <span>will provide information about the national survey data and how to access it. Geared especially for faculty and advanced graduate students, information about the national survey data linked to other datasets could help broaden the scope of faculty and student research and help generate new research ideas and hypotheses. </span></p></span><span><p><span>Some of the survey data include the National Health Nutrition and Examination Survey (NHANES), National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), National Hospital Care Survey (NHCS) and National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). <Title>UMBC Transition to Stage 3 On-Campus RCA Mode</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div>Dear Members of UMBC’s Research &amp; Creative Achievement (RCA) Community,</div><div><br></div><div>I want to thank all of you for your understanding of and attention to the COVID-19-related processes and procedures implemented over this past year. </div><div><br></div><div>Together we have been able to establish procedures to bring many of you back to Campus to relaunch your RCA activities, while following national and state guidance to limit exposure and focus on the health and safety of our campus community.  Currently, we have about 800 individuals approved for On-Campus RCA activities and some 400 of them coming to campus on a regular basis in any given week. </div><div><br></div><div>We highly appreciate the overall compliance with campus-wide training, testing and daily symptom tracking requirements and our combined record of maintaining safety while pursuing our RCA activities has been exemplary. </div><div><br></div><div>Based on our current assessment of the situation in Maryland and on our Campus, we have reached the decision to transition into Stage 3 On-Campus RCA Mode effective Monday, March 29, 2021. The main difference is an increase in density in the RCA facilities from currently 235 sq.ft. per person to 150 sq.ft. per person.  More details are <a href="https://research.umbc.edu/covid19/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">provided on this page</a> and below.</div><div><br></div><div>However, since the pandemic is not over we need to continue our vigilance and continue to adhere to testing, symptom tracking, mask wearing, physical distancing, and other key regulations.</div><div><div><strong><p><strong><span><br>Please consult the</span><span> </span><a href="https://covid19.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC COVID-19 page</a><span> for a complete set of guidance documents</span></strong></p><div><br></div></strong></div><div><strong>Transition to Stage 3 On-Campus RCA Mode – March 29, 2021</strong></div></div><ul><li>UMBC will be transitioning into the next stage of On-RCA Access by further increasing the density in the laboratories and studios, effective Monday March 29, 2021.</li><li>Under Stage 3 RCA Mode we require a minimum of 150 sq.ft. per individual in any laboratory or studio on campus - a increase from the current density of 235 sq.ft. per person under Stage 2 RCA Mode.  Please include those updated space considerations as you submit any future <a href="http://umbc.edu/go/940" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>On-Campus RCA Activities Request</strong></a>.</li><li>Any currently active approvals for On-Campus RCA activities will remain in effect through at least May 31, 2021, albeit subject to changing regulations issued by the State of Maryland, USM, or UMBC.</li><li>Under Stage 3 RCA Mode, resuming in-person, on-campus interactions for research purposes is currently not permitted. <Title>Additional Proposals Types Available in Research.gov</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><blockquote><div><p>NSF has announced 3 more proposal types that are available in research.gov per Jean Feldmans' letter below:</p><p><br></p><p>Dear Collegues:</p><p><br></p><p>Effective March 22, the National Science Foundation (NSF) enabled three new proposal types in the Research.gov Proposal Submission System and in the recently launched Research.gov Proposal Preparation Demo Site. These are the Facilitation Awards for Scientists and Engineers with Disabilities (FASED), Equipment, and Travel proposal types. New automated compliance checks and associated error and warning messages for these proposal types were also implemented. In addition, proposal withdrawal functionality was added for both single submission (with or without subawards) and separately submitted collaborative proposals from multiple organizations. New training resources have also been added to the Research.gov <a href="https://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&amp;_pageLabel=research_node_display&amp;_nodePath=/researchGov/Service/Desktop/ProposalPreparationandSubmission.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">About Proposal Preparation and Submission</a><span> </span>page.</p><p> </p><p><strong>FASED, Equipment, and Travel Proposals</strong></p><ul><li>Proposers can now select a FASED, Equipment, or Travel proposal type in the Research.gov Proposal Submission System proposal setup wizard, in addition to the existing Research.gov proposal type options:</li></ul><ul><ul><li>Research</li><li>Rapid Response Research (RAPID)</li><li>EArly-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER)</li><li>Research Advanced by Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (RAISE)</li></ul></ul><ul><li>All supported proposal types are available in the Research.gov Proposal Preparation Demo Site.</li><li>New automated compliance checks for FASED, Equipment, and Travel proposal types have been added to Research.gov and are listed on the Research.gov Automated Proposal Compliance Checks for Proposals dated March 22, 2021 on the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/autocompliance.jsp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Automated Compliance Checking of NSF Proposals</a><span> </span>page.</li></ul><ul><ul><li>A reminder: Error messages prohibit proposal submission to NSF, whereas warning messages still permit proposal submission.  </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Refer to the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf20001&amp;org=NSF" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Proposal &amp; Award Policies &amp; Procedures Guide</em></a> (PAPPG) (NSF 20-1) for FASED, Equipment, and Travel proposal requirements.</li></ul><p> </p><p><strong>Proposal Withdrawal Functionality</strong></p><ul><li>Proposing organizations can now withdraw both single submission (with or without subawards) and separately submitted collaborative proposals from multiple organizations in Research.gov.</li><li>Organizations no longer need to contact the NSF Help Desk to initiate Research.gov proposal withdrawal actions.</li><li>A new Proposal Withdrawal section has been added to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Research.gov <a href="https://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&amp;_pageLabel=research_node_display&amp;_nodePath=/researchGov/Service/Desktop/ProposalPreparationandSubmission.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">About Proposal Preparation and Submission</a><span> </span>page left navigation menu.</li><li>Refer to <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappg20_1/pappg_4.jsp#IVA" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">PAPPG Chapter IV.A.</a> for proposal withdrawal requirements.</li></ul><p> </p><p><strong>Training Resources</strong></p><ul><li>New and updated system-related FAQs by topic are available on the Research.gov <a href="https://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&amp;_pageLabel=research_node_display&amp;_nodePath=/researchGov/Service/Desktop/ProposalPreparationandSubmission.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">About Proposal Preparation and Submission</a><span> </span>page left navigation menu.</li><li>A new 16-minute Research.gov proposal demo video has been added to the Research.gov <a href="https://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&amp;_pageLabel=research_node_display&amp;_nodePath=/researchGov/Service/Desktop/ProposalPreparationandSubmission.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">About Proposal Preparation and Submission</a><span> </span>page <a href="https://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&amp;_pageLabel=research_node_display&amp;_nodePath=/researchGov/Service/Desktop/ProposalPreparationandSubmission.html#video" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Video Tutorials</a> section.</li><ul><li>The video highlights key proposal preparation steps including:</li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Setting up a proposal</li><li>Uploading a document and compliance messaging</li><li>Preparing Proposal File Update/Budget Revisions</li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>A new How-to Guides section has been added to the Research.gov <a href="https://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&amp;_pageLabel=research_node_display&amp;_nodePath=/researchGov/Service/Desktop/ProposalPreparationandSubmission.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">About Proposal Preparation and Submission</a><span> </span>page left navigation menu.
