New Modules Added and Existing Modules Updated!
OSP is pleased to announce that the PI training, entitled Principal Investigator Research Administration
Training & Education (PIRATE) has received some necessary updates and modifications for 2022!
The new modules (Compensation and Kuali Research) as well as updates (links, new/updated information) to the original eleven modules of PIRATE are now available on Blackboard.
Additionally, the PDF version of PIRATE (for viewing use as a reference tool is also available at the following link:

Spring 2022 Effort Certification is DUE September 30, 2022
Time to certify effort!
To the UMBC Grant Community,
This is a reminder that Effort Reports for Spring 2022 are
available and ready for certification. The Spring 2022 period includes Payroll
2022-015 through Payroll 2022-026 (from January 02, 2022 through June 18,
2022). Certifications are due September 30, 2022.
Please remember that Effort Reports are both a Compliance
Tool and a Grants Management Tool. After reviewing payroll charges, work with
your business managers if any changes are needed. Payroll cost transfers
(retros) must be processed prior to certification of Effort Reports.
To find out whether you have open effort reports for Spring
2022 (see page 6, Year: 2022 Period: Spring) and to learn how to certify them,
see the attached Effort Report Quick Reference Guide with screenshots
for your convenience. This guide provides instructions on how to access the
Effort Reports. If you are new to Effort Report certifications, please see page
10, #1 for information on how to gain certification access.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is committed to building a Culture of Health that provides everyone in America a fair and just opportunity for health and well-being. Racial disparities in COVID-19 infections and deaths have brought to the forefront well-documented and longstanding inequities in family and community wealth and opportunity. Upending centuries of policy decisions that perpetuated racism will require significant transformation to elevate the voices of communities historically excluded from decision-making.
RWJF funds research that can move policy toward the goals of dismantling structural racism and promoting health equity. In 2015, RWJF launched the Policies for Action (P4A) research program to support public and private-sector policy research that builds understanding on how economic, social, and health policies advance health and racial equity.
Any systematic approach to eliminating the racial wealth gap requires transformative policies focused on bolstering long-term family and community income streams and building and sustaining generational family and community wealth in Black, Indigenous, Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and other communities of color. The goal of this P4A call for proposals is to build the evidence base investigating how national, state, local, or private-sector policies and practices can reduce growing levels of racial inequality in wealth, and significantly improve the financial wellbeing and economic security of families and communities that have been systematically subject to disinvestment, and therefore are unable to enjoy a fair and just opportunity to be healthy.

You are getting ready to submit your first NSF proposal and wondering, what should I be including in my Current and Pending document? If it doesn't belong in the Current and Pending file, where else should it go in my application? Do I need to document my teaching commitments?
Good news! NSF has published a useful table to outline what information should be disclosed in your proposal and in which specific sections. This, along with other useful resources can be found on the

On today's special episode of Retrieving the Social Sciences, we hear a panel discussion about UMBC's social science Fulbright Scholars. Joining us on the panel is Maryam Elhabashy (UMBC '21), a Research Assistant at Rutgers University and a 2022 Fulbright recipient. Maryam's Fulbright project is entitled "Faith, Family, Food, and Fitness: Exploring Trends of Obesity among Kuwaiti Women."
We also hear from Dr. Brian Souders, Fulbright Program Advisor and the Associate Director of Global Engagement Opportunities at UMBC.

Register for OLAW Conversations: Humane Endpoints

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) is sponsoring a virtual "OLAW Conversation" with a focus on humane endpoints on July 26, 2022 from 1:30-3:30
Two panelists, Drs. John Bradfield and Joseph Thulin , will lead a discussion on humane endpoints in biomedical research. The session will explore how to define humane endpoints, evaluate effectiveness, systematically improve the development and evaluation of endpoints at an institutional level, and identify useful resources.
This will also be an interactive discussion with scenario-based learning, and attendees will have the opportunity to add to the conversation by sharing their questions, perspectives, and ideas.
