NSF CAREER proposal workshop

Presented by Dr. Lauren Clay, Associate Professor and Department Chair, Emergency Health Services

This session will cover elements of the CAREER program, strategies for success, and planning your submission. Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm potential research and educational goals, workshop the ideas in small groups, and create an action plan for developing a competitive proposal.

Lauren Clay is a disaster scientist and public health researcher. She is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Health Services at University of Maryland Baltimore County. Her research focuses on individual, household, and community health impacts of climate disasters. She has studied Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, and Florence, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the 2013 Moore, OK tornadoes, and the Camp Fire among other disasters and public health emergencies. Her expertise is in disaster disruption to the local food environment and food and nutrition insecurity. From 2018-2020 she was an Early Career Research Fellow with the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program to study the post-disaster food environment. In 2021, she was awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER and NSF Convergence Accelerator awards focused on bolstering food system resilience to disasters. She co-chairs the national COVID-19 Food and Nutrition Security Working Group supported by Healthy Eating Research, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Nutrition and Obesity Prevention Research and Evaluation Network, a program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has a PhD in Disaster Science and Management from University of Delaware and a Master of Public Health from Drexel University.

The 2023 Region II Program Committee is pleased to invite submissions for session proposals for the in-person Region II Fall Meeting in Annapolis MD, on November 12-15, 2023.

When thinking of potential topics, please keep in mind topics related to the current challenges faced by research administrators in this new era for our field. 

If you have a topic for a session and/or would like to submit a proposal, please visit the call for proposals  page to submit the idea/proposal to the Program Committee for consideration. If you have more than one topic or session proposal, please submit a new form for each. 

The Program Committee is also inviting submissions for session presenters who would like to be paired with others for the Region II Fall Meeting. Please visit the call for presenters page to complete the needed information.

We are seeking an organized graduate student to serve as a Research Assistant to aid in a grant-funded research project. You will support the project by completing literature searches and reviews to identify factors impacting elementary literacy achievement, with the goal of identifying data sets to bring into a virtual reality (VR) environment for future teachers at the Imaging Research Center. You will be a part of a passionate, knowledgeable cross-disciplinary research team.

Responsibilities include:

• Conducting literature searches using appropriate databases
• Summarizing and synthesizing results of literature review
• Participation in research team meetings and ongoing project discussions
• Detailed documentation of literature review process and organization of literature and findings
• Research into the availability of identified data sets of interest

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to develop, organize, and maintain systems to manage projects
• Experience within the field of education (school or community-based work with youth) and an asset-based orientation to students, families, and communities 
• Experience with academic research (using databases, conducting literature reviews, managing data, etc.)

We are seeking someone for 10-15 hours per week for the semester, with the possibility of extending through the summer. Pay is $22/hour.
