Lunch will be provided at 11:30 A.M.
This workshop is for CAHSS faculty at all career stages, including those who are new to UMBC’s grants process and those who would like a refresher.
Participants will learn about the process and requirements for preparing and submitting external funding applications at UMBC, and the support available through CARAT. There will be time for Q&A.
Topics to be covered:
• Proposal planning
• PI Eligibility and PIRATE training
• Developing grant and fellowship proposals
• Routing a proposal in Kuali

This workshop focuses on Fulbright opportunities in the Humanities through the U.S. Scholar Program. We will cover a variety of Fulbright opportunities and discuss how to access UMBC internal support for application development and CAHSS routing approval.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, the largest educational exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State, provides opportunities for research, teaching or both in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP in advance.
Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester) for their first-year activities. While faculty may come from any UMBC department, priority will be given to groups with at least one member from a humanities department.
Fundable activities include travel to sites or archives, speaker presentations, use/purchase of technology, creation of resources or materials, and support for regular meetings or workshops, etc.

The Fall 2023 period
includes Payroll 2024-001 through Payroll 2024-014 (from June 18, 2023 through December 30, 2023).
Please remember that Effort Reports are both a Compliance Tool and
a Grants Management Tool. Late effort reports are deemed out of compliance with
federal regulations and UMBC procedures.

The Dresher Center for the Humanities has two upcoming deadlines for fellowship opportunities
- Residential Faculty Research Fellowships - The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Residential Faculty Research Fellowships for Spring 2025.
Full-time tenured or tenure-track UMBC faculty, as well as full-time Professors of the Practice, who are pursuing humanities research in College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are invited to apply for a Residential Faculty Research Fellowship for Spring 2025.
These fellowships offer the gift of time, space, and collegial conversation within a robust humanities center environment and enhance the conversation surrounding inclusive excellence.
Submit completed proposals and letters of support from department chairs or program directors to dreshercenter@umbc.edu.
- Graduate Student Research Fellowships - The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Graduate Student Research Fellowships for the 2024-25 academic year. One fellowship will be awarded for Fall 2024 and one for Spring 2025. Funding is intended to support and promote promising humanities research by graduate students at UMBC.
The fellowships are open to all UMBC doctoral and master's level students working on humanities-related research projects that will culminate in a dissertation or master's thesis. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.

"After 75 Years of AI, Can Machines Think?" with Tim Finlin.
Mathematician Alan Turing proposed a simple test to answer the question 'Can machines think?' nearly 75 years ago. Today, the surprising abilities of generative AI systems like ChatGPT make many wonder if we can finally respond positively. Dr. Finin will briefly cover AI's history leading up to the recent development of systems using neural networks and large language models like ChatGPT and what to expect in the next few years. He'll touch on what current systems can and cannot do, the ways they can fail (e.g., hallucinations), the larger risks they may enable (e.g., spreading disinformation), and the societal changes they might induce (e.g., changing copyright and education practices). Dr. Finin will finish by outlining the prospects for the good things they will enable and how AI researchers hope to achieve them.

Karen Chen.
Picture this: You are in a classroom where you are free to use GPT - but should you? This session invites you to explore this dilemma. We will discuss the pros and cons of GPT in education, considering its impact on your learning, future career, and life in an AI-driven era, using examples from Dr. Chen's experience teaching two Data Science courses (one undergraduate and one graduate level) at UMBC in Fall 2023, where students were allowed to freely use GPT. Dr. Chen will share insights gained from identifying GPT-generated work, and discuss strategies for responsibly and productively engaging GPT as your personal AI assistant.

Join University of Maryland, College Park's Web Librarian, Amy Swackhamer, as she gives a brief background into the current state of digital data privacy concerns, including developments in technology and laws, and reasons to care about your data privacy. Most of our time will focus on different vectors of data surveillance, such as web browsing, smartphone apps and location data, social media, and password management, and steps for protecting your personal data from intrusion through those vectors. Amy will mention sources for more information and provide an annotated resource list with details about organizations working in this area, books and websites focused on privacy, and other places to learn more.

"ChatGPT and AI in Research, Education, and the Classroom" with
Rachael Kang.
Join Information Systems PhD student Rachael Kang as she shares her research journey of how she came to study AI, starting from her master's thesis on the utility of machine learning in predicting suicide risk to her current research interests of integrating a large language model into patient portals to increase patient health literacy. Rachael will also discuss how she has introduced ChatGPT as a learning tool for the students she TAs in Information Systems 303, the activities she has conducted with the students to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT, and the types of conversations she has with students about what is proper and improper use of ChatGPT.
