IBC IS LIVE IN KUALI
IBC
We have launched the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) module in Kuali. The week of June 15th we moved IBC to the electronic software system, Kuali. This is a soft go live so we will be working with faculty members to get their current IBCs in the Kuali System of record. This transition begun the week of June 15th and will run until September. The expectation is that all faculty will have their current active IBC Protocols in the Kuali system by then. Our IBC Division within the Office of Research Protection and Compliance (ORPC). ORPC’s IBC division and the RAS (Kuali) group will be assisting you with the transition of your approved protocol forms into Kuali. Please note it is important to only input materials and methods that has been previously approved by the IBC committee. Otherwise, the system is ready for submission of any new protocols.

We will be hosting regular virtual drop-in sessions so the community can ask questions on procedures, submissions and all things IBC. Our 1st drop in will be next week on July 2nd from 11:30 am to 12:30pm. The Webex link is below:

Announcing Families in Perilous Times: A Council on Contemporary Families (CCF) Policy and Public Scholarship Workshop, a FREE symposium and public scholarship training workshop, to be held on Friday, October 18th, 2024, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Morning panels will focus on four topics that are the subject of contemporary debates, and have profound effects on families: The fall of Roe vs. Wade, Anti-LGBTQ+ laws, Student Debt, and Immigration law. See our exciting line-up of speakers here!
Afternoon speakers will provide training on podcasting, creating short research videos, and writing academic blog posts, brief reports, and op-eds about family research. Workshop participants will then break into small groups, give 3-minute roundtable presentations (and will be listed on the program) and will write short family-related public scholarship pieces in small group workshops led by senior CCF scholars. Whether you are a beginner writing your first public scholarship piece, or a seasoned public scholar refining your craft, this workshop is for you!
Fill out this simple application by July 31st to participate in the afternoon workshop. Your public scholarship piece should be tied to an in-progress or recently published research project that is related to families. Graduate students are welcome!

New Manager of the UMBC Institutional Review Board
Please join us in welcoming Tory Williams PhD. as the new manager of UMBC IRB effective 6/24/2024
Tory Williams is transitioning to the Office of Research Protections and Compliance from the Faculty Development Center. An experienced Pedagogical Researcher, Tory has a rich history in the higher education sector, with roles encompassing Teaching, Research, and Professional Development. She is proficient in STEM Educational Reform, Experimental Design, Active Learning, Evolutionary Biology, and Quantitative Statistics. Tory is a seasoned research professional holding a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. In addition to her contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning, she plays a pivotal role in compiling, analyzing, interpreting, and disseminating data for the UMBC NSF IUSE grant.
Dr Williams looks forward to continuing her support for UMBC's wide-ranging research initiatives. Her 16 years at UMBC, serving in various capacities across different departments, have fostered extensive faculty networking relationships, which will prove invaluable for ongoing and future IRB collaborations.
Dr Williams will be working alongside Emily Redding and the IRB committee to keep the IRB running smoothly. The IRB office will continue to be in the Engerineering Building 329. Any questions please reach out to the IRB at

Institutional Training Grant Applications for Due Dates on or After January 25,

Purpose:
This notice announces updates to the NIH Institutional
Training Program applications and required training data tables. These changes
take effect starting with submissions for due dates on or after January 25,
2025. The overall goal of these changes
is to:

Reduce applicant and reviewer burden.
·
Further support the development of a biomedical
research workforce that will benefit from the full range of perspectives,
experiences and backgrounds needed to advance discovery.
·
Align SF424 with updates with relevant NIH
training grant NOFOs and requirements.

Congratulations to Cameron McAdams, OSP's New Assistant Dir.
OSP is very pleased to formally
announce that Cameron McAdams has been selected as the new Assistant Director
of the Office of Sponsored Programs. Cameron joined the UMBC Office of
Sponsored Programs as a Grants and Contracts Specialist in November 2010,
and was promoted to Grants & Contracts Manager in 2015.
Cameron provides fourteen (14) years
of experience in Research Administration to the AD position in OSP. It should
be duly noted that he is also a proud alumnus of UMBC (Class of 2006, majoring
in Modern Language and Linguistics)!
Cameron has had the opportunity to
work with nearly all of the colleges and units during his years working in OSP,
but has spent the past nine (9) years managing the grants and contracts that
have emanated from the College of Engineering and Information Technology
(COEIT). His astute knowledge and
experience have been well-noted and recognized by his peers as he was recently
nominated for the COEIT Outstanding Partnership award and had been nominated
for Staff Employee of the Quarter as well in the past.
Cameron’s proficiencies and
leadership capabilities will be most welcomed in his new position as OSP
Assistant Director.

The end of the fiscal year is fast approaching! This means that the University has shorter processing periods in the month of June for all types of financial transactions so that they can close out their books for the year.
Transactions requested by CARAT after the University deadlines will be processed by the Central Offices after July 1st, 2024.
If you have transactions that need to post before June 30th, in order for CARAT to process your requests in time, please be aware of the following deadlines.

- PAW Requisitions / Purchase Orders
Friday, June 7
- PAW Payment Requests (non-travel related reimbursements, honorariums, etc.)
- Travel Reimbursements

- Working Fund Requests / Reconciliation
You can still request transactions after these dates, but they may not be processed by the Central Offices until after July 1st, 2024 when regular processing resumes.
Please contact us as soon as possible using the
CARAT RT Ticket System if you would like to make a transaction this fiscal year or you have any questions. If you have already sent a request, please know that it is in our queue for processing. You can see the status of your ticket by visiting
rt.umbc.edu or by following up on the email sent when the ticket was generated.
