<Title>Phasing out the SoTL Broad IRB Protocol with USM</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><h3>This announcement is for those UMBC PIs who conduct Scholarship of Teaching &amp; Learning (SoTL) research and previously submitted IRB protocol application(s) through the broad management of University of Maryland College Park. </h3><h3><br></h3><h3>The following message, shared by Joe Smith (Director of UMCP's Human Research Protection Program) is regarding SoTL protocols that are already/currently housed under UMD's IRB. Such IRB protocols will need to migrate back to UMBC's IRB within the next year. As of December 2024, all new SoTL IRB applications must be filed through UMBC's IRB and Kuali Protocols system. </h3><div><br></div><div><em>"The SoTL Broad Protocol with USM has been recently approved for one additional year with an expiration date of 7/15/2026.  <strong><u>The SoTL Broad Protocol will not be renewed beyond 7/14/2026</u></strong>.  </em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em>The UMD IRB is transitioning to a new electronic submission system that is not conducive to the current SoTL Broad Protocol process.  <strong><u>Please see below for important notes &amp; dates about continuing your project</u>:</strong></em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em>1) If your project will be completed prior to 7/15/26, there is no action that you need to take.  </em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em>2) If your project will continue beyond 7/15/26, you must submit your project through your home institution's IRB well in advance of 7/15/26 in order to avoid expiration and closure of your SoTL project.</em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em>3) If you need to submit an Amendment to your SoTL project, it must be submitted prior to 12/1/25.  The UMD IRB will not be accepting changes to SoTL projects beyond 12/1/25.  </em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em>4) If you need to make changes to your SoTL project after 12/1/25, that would be the time to transfer your SoTL project to your home institution's IRB Office. </em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em>If you have any questions or concerns, you are welcome to reach out to myself or Nancy O’Neill at the USM Kirwan Center, at <a href="mailto:noneill@usmd.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">noneill@usmd.edu</a>.  Please copy us on any emails.<br><br></em></div><div><em>Thanks for working with us on this over the past 3 years!</em></div><div><em>Joe</em></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><p><em><strong><span>Joseph M. <Title>Economic Research Rescue Fund Now Accepting Applications</Title>

The SSRC will convene a Public Review Panel to evaluate submissions. Panel members are expected to include consumers of economic information, including former state and local officials, high school teachers, journalists, and business leaders.     <div class="html-content"><p>Are you interested in supporting ethical research at UMBC? </p><p>The <span>Institutional Review Board (IRB)</span> — the university committee that reviews, approves, and monitors research involving human participants — is currently accepting <span>volunteer applications</span> from <span>faculty, staff, and students</span> to join the committee.</p><p>The IRB regularly rotates its membership to ensure representation across departments and areas of expertise. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the integrity of UMBC’s research enterprise while gaining valuable experience in research ethics and compliance.</p><h3>What IRB Members Do:</h3><div><ul><li>Review research proposals and consent documents</li><li>Evaluate ethical, scientific, and regulatory aspects of studies</li><li>Assess risk levels and ensure compliance with federal regulations</li><li>Recommend improvements to protocols and IRB procedures</li><li>Attend and participate in IRB meetings and deliberations</li></ul><div><h3>Time Commitment:</h3><ul><li><span>Faculty/Staff</span>: 3-year renewable term</li><li><span>Students</span>: 1-year renewable term</li><li>The IRB meets <span>five times per academic year</span> (October, December, February, April, and June)</li><li>Meetings are held on <span>Mondays from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM</span></li></ul></div></div><div><div><span>How to Apply:</span></div></div><div><p>If you're interested in serving, please complete the form linked below.     <div>The DMV area’s unique blend of Central American and 
    Caribbean migrations is often overlooked in favor of larger places like 
    New York and Los Angeles. Not anymore! Join Dr. Tania Lizarazo, Dr. 
    Thania Muñoz, Dr. Yolanda Valencia, and Dr. María Célleri, co-leads of 
    UMBC's Latin American Feminisms Faculty Working Group, to learn more 
    about their <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/summerspecialprograms/events/143538/13ba5/854adffcbe392b84f639641b8e4b1a0c/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fdreshercenter.umbc.edu%2Fabya-yala-project%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Abya Yala Project</a>,
     a community-engaged multi-step and mixed-media project that will name, 
    archive, and highlight the efforts and varied lived experiences of the 
    Latine/x community in the larger DMV region. Designed as an interactive 
    website, it will feature contributions from students, faculty, artists, 
    and community members, emphasizing the diversity of Latinx/e experiences
     beyond traditional migration hubs. This website will center these 
    communities’ voices through various mediums, such as academic essays, 
    creative writing, stories, art, and multimedia.This interactive website 
    will serve as their first step towards creating the Abya Yala Center at 
    UMBC in the years to come. </div>

    <div>Faculty seeking external funding for research and creative 
    achievement projects in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences 
    should contact <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/carat/posts/150774/13ba5/b67a4aa461f5bb165714c7ef10c86dc4/web/link?link=mailto%3Arbruba1%40umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Rachel Brubaker</a>,
     CARAT Associate Director for Research Development. Consult with your 
    department chair or program director before beginning any funding 
    application. External grant and fellowship applications must be routed 
    for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the 
    CAHSS internal routing form before submission. Plan additional time (5-7
     business days) for routing.</div>

    <strong>CARAT</strong> (Creative Achievement and Research 
    Administration Team) assists CAHSS faculty with research development and
     pre- and post-award services. CARAT offers a range of support 
    activities for faculty seeking extramural funding, including drop-in 
    sessions, individual consultations, workshops, and co-sponsored 
    sessions.      (you must be logged-in to myUMBC to complete CARAT request forms). The 
    lead time for fellowship proposal development is 2-3 business weeks, and
     at minimum 4 business weeks for grant proposal development. CARAT 
    reserves the right to decline proposal requests that do not include 
    adequate lead time.</div>

    <u>PI Eligibility</u>: UMBC uses Kuali, a cloud-based 
    research administration tool, for proposals and awards. UMBC faculty 
    identified as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator on any 
    proposal or award must first <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/carat/posts/150774/13ba5/c22c6fc82ccefd40c047f3b0935fcb53/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fumbc.app.box.com%2Fembed%2Fs%2Fm6rzjynl73s5hpow9zecwofjf77gydc0%3FsortColumn%3Ddate%26view%3Dlist%2522%2520width%3D%2522500%2522%2520height%3D%2522400%2522%2520frameborder%3D%25220%2522%2520allowfullscreen%2520webkitallowfullscreen%2520msallowfullscreen%253E%253C%2Fiframe%253E" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">obtain PI eligibility</a>
     in order to develop proposals and receive awards at UMBC. This includes
     faculty with appointments after August 1, 2012, as well as faculty who 
    have not previously applied for external funding. The process involves 
    completing the Principal Investigator Research Administration Training 
    and Education (PIRATE) in Blackboard and a PI Eligibility request form 
    via DocuSign. PI applicants must also obtain PeopleSoft Finance and PAW 
    Access.</div>
