<Title>Summer Research Opportunity in Social Sciences</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Summer Research Initiative (SRI) was created in 1999 by the Office of the Dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) and is supported by the Office of the Provost, the Graduate School, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the College. The program is designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields.</p><p>In that spirit, we are interested in receiving applications to the program from a broad spectrum of students, including African Americans, Latino/Hispanics, American Indian/Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, as well as students with research interests related to diverse communities.</p><p>The goals of the SRI are to:</p><ul><li>Increase the knowledge of, and interest in, doctoral-level training in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences;</li><li>Provide rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn about graduate studies and the range of research and scholarship in the social, behavioral and economic sciences at the University of Maryland;</li><li>Provide a laboratory experience that enhances basic research knowledge and skills;</li><li>Provide lectures, workshops, didactic exchanges and other programming to enhance students' knowledge of the graduate application process, negotiating the academic rigors and professional and personal challenges encountered in graduate school, and developing career paths in social, behavioral and economic sciences; and</li><li>Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for students to advance their training in the social, behavioral and economic sciences.</li></ul><p>The SRI is part of the College's longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. According to 2016 data from the magazine <span>Diverse: Issues in Higher Education</span>, the university ranks 12th in the country in the number of graduate and professional degrees awarded and 28th in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to underrepresented minority students. The Summer Research Initiative is an integral part of our efforts.</p><p><span>The application for the 2019 SRI will be available from November 1, 2018 to February 10, 2019. Applications will be reviewed February – March 2019, and selection announcements will be made beginning April 2019. </span></p><p><span>The actual program runs 8 weeks, from June 3 – July 26, 2019. Students are required to arrive on campus on Saturday, June 1 for mandatory Saturday and Sunday program orientation, but SRI programming will officially begin on Monday, June 3.</span></p></div>

<Title>One-Day Public Policy Camp for Undergraduates</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>The School of Public Policy and <a href="http://www.appam.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM<strong>)</strong></a> are hosting a one-day Public Policy Camp at UMBC on March 12, 2019. </span></p><p><span>The purpose of the program is to </span><span>introduce the field of public policy to a group of students who might not otherwise be familiar with it. APPAM is looking to increase knowledge, particularly among people who are members of groups that are underrepresented in public policy work.</span></p><p><span>This is a great opportunity to identify local students from diverse backgrounds who could pursue future education and career in a public-policy-related field. </span></p><p><span>The one-day program will consist of networking opportunities, group table activities, policy simulations, and panel sessions. Dr. Hrabowski and Dean Casper will be opening the event with remarks. <Title>No-Cost Extension Reminders</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><u><strong>NO-COST EXTENSIONS</strong></u></div><div><br></div><div>The award agreement issued by the sponsor establishes a project timeline, creates a schedule for the submission of reports and other deliverables, and states a project end-date. If a project will not be completed by the end-date indicated on the agreement, then an extension request must be completed. <br></div><div><em>Principal Investigators should work with OSP when making an extension request.</em> If an extension is not requested, the University could be in breach of the agreement, which increases the risk of nonpayment or the potential for a lawsuit.</div><div><br></div><div>A no-cost extension offers an additional period of performance to complete the project and file reports, without the provision of additional funding by the sponsor. <strong><em>Requests for extensions must be submitted far enough in advance to allow processing prior to the original termination date of the project.</em></strong> The procedures used to request a no-cost extension vary depending upon the type of award and the sponsor. <br></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Federal</strong><br>For most Federally-funded grants, but not contracts, UMBC is permitted to approve a single, i.e., once during the life of a grant, no- cost extension. The no-cost extension is for a period not to exceed 12 months beyond the termination date of the grant. Since not all Federal sponsors have delegated the authority to institutions to grant no-cost extensions, Principal Investigators should work with OSP when making an extension request.<br><br><em>Every request for a no-cost extension, regardless of the funding agency, must be submitted to OSP prior to the termination date of the award</em> and must provide the following information:<br>    -Summary of progress-to-date regarding the work of the project<br>    -Summary of the work to be completed during the extension period<br>    -Justification for the extension, including a description of why the project could not be finished in the planned amount of time<br>    -An estimate of the funds remaining in the project (both direct and F&amp;A)<br>    -A description regarding the manner in which those funds will be spent during the extension<br><br><strong>Non-Federal</strong><br>For sponsors other than Federal agencies, contact OSP to determine if extensions are allowed.</div><div><br></div><div><div><em><strong>Reminder About No-Cost Extensions</strong></em></div><div><em>Sponsoring 
    agencies do not permit no-cost extensions solely for the purpose of 
    spending the funds remaining in an award. All no-cost extensions require
