Updates coming to the NSF Biographical Sketch
NSF has recently put out upcoming changes to their Proposal and Awards Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG). Among those changes, NSF is designating the Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae as an approved format.
Additionally starting with the next iteration of the PAPPG, only Biographical Sketches generated through an NSF approved format will be accepted.

IRB applications and the revised Common Rule
We're just about six months in with the IRB's implementation of the revised Common rule. We in the ORPC have noticed a fairly seamless transition so far. Please let us know of any protocol application or consent document questions as UMBC continues the process.

The Center for Social Science Scholarship is partnering with SAGE Campus to offer a free 30 day Introduction to R for Social Scientists online course.
The course will open on June 17. It takes around 12 hours to complete, and learners will be given 30-day access to complete the course at their own pace. Course objectives and more information are available here.
Enrollment is limited to 5 learners, on a first-come, first-served basis. Email socialscience@umbc.eduto indicate your interest, and please provide your full name, preferred email address, affiliation, and home department.

New proposal policy by the UMBC Office of Sponsored Programs
A new policy for proposal submission is being implemented by UMBC’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).
As of August 1, 2019, OSP will require that proposals be received, in a ready-to-submit state, 3 days in advance of the proposal submission deadline.
In addition, on each day at 8am, OSP will review all proposals that are due that day. If a proposal is not in a ready-to-submit state by 8am on the day it is due, OSP will not send it forward.
Please make note that there is no grace period, and no exceptions will be made.
The Maryland Institute for Policy, Analysis, and Research (MIPAR) supports UMBC social science faculty and graduate students by providing researchers with pre-award and post-grant management assistance.
In order to meet the requirements of this new policy, MIPAR must have a PI’s fully completed proposal no later than five days prior to the submission deadline. This includes any documents needed for subawards. More time may be required if the proposal is large or complex.
Please contact MIPAR as soon as you begin to consider preparing a proposal, so that MIPAR staff can help you establish and meet a feasible timeline.

Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the AERA-NSF Grants Program emphasizes the advanced statistical analysis of data sets from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, NSF, and other federal agencies. The program also supports studies using large-scale international data systems (e.g., PISA, PIRLS, or TIMMS) that benefit from U.S. federal government support. In addition, statewide longitudinal administrative data systems enhanced through federal grants are also eligible for consideration. The Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) is an all-expense-paid Summer Institute, research education and mentoring initiative sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This Summer Institute initiative addresses the difficulties experienced by junior investigators and transitioning postdoctoral scientists in establishing independent academic research careers and negotiating through the academic ranks. The primary outcome of this program is to increase the number of scientists and research-oriented faculty who are from backgrounds currently under-represented in the biomedical sciences and those with disabilities, by preparing them to successfully compete for external funding for scientific research in heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) disorders.
